their little non-rendezvous.
@kidxmiā
her little āI miss youā was a key to unlock his heart, and seungho grew up and weak against it. he returned her presence with a smile and gentle rub on her head, despite acting like he was vexed of her being earlier. he loosened the apron and folded it. āthereās no such thing as leftover for you,ā he sneered, keeping the atmosphere playful. āUncle would gladly give you the premium one. Right, Uncle?ā seungho looked over his shoulder, addressing the middle-aged man behind the counter on the very back of the room. he gave the youngsters a big thumbs up, suddenly all cheery because hyebin was stopping by. luckily, she brought in a good news tonight. at least for both of them, it was something worth to be celebrated. ācongratulations! I guess coming here is the best choice you made for tonight,ā he pulled a grin, beckoning toward the empty table far from the front door. it was a good spot for them to shelter from the cold weather, even though it was already spring. the round metal table was clean, with stools stacked on one corner. he took three and lined them up around the table. āwait here, Iāll bring the food for you.ā
even though there was an absence of each othersā presence for two yearsābecause of seunghoās military serviceāit was easy to pick up the familiarity between them again when they made time for it. there were many gaps he wished for her to fill them in, but too many reasons for seungho to stay quiet about it. how he gained more information of his fatherās death, and how he took the opposite path of her to find the true justice. she was a police, the exact definition of fighting crimes and injustice. meanwhile, seungho decided to work under the shadow and seek for the truth with his own methodābeing part of the criminals. it was a secret and the very last thing he wanted hyebin to know; seungho was into his thoughts in the backyard, preparing a jar of burning briquettes for her late dinner. he used the pincers to clamp on the heated bowl and carried it to the table in quick steps, dropping it on the hole at the center and covered it with a tray. his uncle came over with a plate of raw meat, neatly sliced with drools inducing marbles of fat and fresh flesh of quality meat. side dishes, vegetables and two shot glasses were coming after.
seungho took a seat next to her and immediately filled their tiny cups with clear liquid of soju. āso, what kind of crime did you block today?ā
āHey!ā Though loud, her voice rings with laughter. It is nothing out of the ordinary, really, and perhaps that is exactly one of the reasons she had always been so comfortable around Seungho. She fruitlessly ducks her head in response to his actions, hands quickly moving to fix whatever part of her hair the elder had ruined. āWhat if I were to meet a nice guy tonight? I wonāt stand a chance anymore!ā The glare that is shot into his direction comes with a grin that she cannot seem to fight against. It is quite obvious that she was joking; if not for the way in which she had been near sing-songing her words, then certainly the brightness of her eyes would have easily given her away. It was unlike Hyebin to get upset over something quite as petty. Frankly speaking, sheād consider his actions rather endearing, if not for the fact that they made her feel like a child (what was it with the men in her life treating her that way?)
Does that really bother her? No. Not right at that moment, at least. Instead she finds herself watching her friend as he leaves the room for a moment, ignoring the demanding rumble inside of her stomach. Unlike Seungho, she has always been entirely unaware of the differences between the pair of themāoblivious, perhaps. Not for a second does she even begin to question his background, or the many lies he has told her about his whereabouts. To her, he is simply Seungho, one of her closest friends. What else could she expect from him, when all he ever did was take care of her (even though he shouldnāt; she could take care of herself perfectly well). Another flash of her teeth is what the male is met with when he returns to their table, only barely managing to stop herself from drooling over the tasty food. āThis looks amazing!ā she exclaims, followed by a few thankful words that are aimed at the man in the kitchen. She then faces Seungho once more, and cheerfully picks up one of the cups.
āI canāt tell you about the crime I blocked. Itās a secet,ā Hyebin teasingly continues, impatiently clinking her glass against his, ābut I am pretty sure I saved Seoul today!ā
