Hello! Here Hygiea , the smallest dwarf planet (at least in milky way). I use any pronouns and love any one

I exitected to meet new people (both celestial bodies and otherwise)!

I may be a bit ...inept or lost most of the time expecially about the rest of the galaxy but I am very helpfull and motivated! If you want a someone im here just dont expect any plans from me.

the thing is that whenever someone says "pluto IS a planet" you don't know if they're actually a space fan who is prepared to love and cherish all the other bodies that would become planets if pluto was promoted again or the dumbest motherfucker on earth who thinks science should have stopped when they left 3rd grade

i have no argument as to why pluto should be a planet other than “it’s probably really sad that it isn’t a planet anymore” and i’ll stand by it god damn it

My astronomy professor pointed out that Pluto went from being just another planet to being the model specimen and best known example of a whole new class of objects, and argued that that's a promotion not a demotion.

Weirdly, Pluto being named a planet again wouldn't "promote" a single other body to planet because the current definition of "planet" states that it must orbit OUR sun. Technically, none of the thousands of exoplanets that have been discovered since the International Astronomical Union adopted its current definition in 2006 (the def that "demoted" Pluto) are planets! The only planets are the ones in our solar system by this definition.

Does that sound exclusionary? Does it sound a bit like saying it's not a bird unless it can fly? Penguins, ostriches, and several other species would beg to differ! Calling Pluto a planet again would have zero effect on what other bodies get called because it already orbits our sun.

So, whether we want to anthropomorphize space science by imagining planets have feelings and feel "left out" or should be included in ideas about justice and equality, or want a definition that can be applied uniformly across space so scientists can compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges (metaphorically speaking), we need a new definition of planet.

The good news is, one is being proposed! The bad news is, for people who, for some reason I genuinely don't understand, have a deep emotional attachment to Pluto's status, it still won't be a planet under the new proposed definition, either. But thousands of exoplanets will be.

A team of astronomers want to broaden the definition of a “planet”, saying the current definition is too vague and excludes exoplanets.

Thank you for the addition, but no, the repromotion of pluto would in fact turn the number of planets in our solar system from 8 to a potentially unbounded number somewhere above 25, pluto shares its space with many other objects like it & there is no coherent definition that would include it while excluding all the other pluto-like objects discovered since then. have you been reading the thread so far
