Since I’m a giant Classics nerd I made some Greek pottery inspired Easter eggs
#no artistic trend in the last 3000 years has ever surpassed the time the minoans just went crazy for octopuses#just absolutely apeshit for cephalopods
cassiopea, otherwise known as upside down jellyfish, have a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic dinoflagellates, whom they protect, and who in turn provide them with energy, provided they aren’t sheltering the sunlight. but by exposing their underside to the sun, the occasional carrier crab is able to grab hold of them for use as cover and protection. apparently the jellyfish don’t much mind, so long as the dinoflagellates have their sunlight. honestly really digging the new trend on this site to say ‘new [organism] dropped’ in response to any announcement of a new species. it helps spread the word of new-to-science organisms, yeah, but also it’s just really, really funny
23- Broadclub Cuttlefish
These cuttlefish can change the color and shape of their skin rapidly, and use this skill to hypnotize their prey before grabbing them

Chaotic academia is
1.) Intense obsessions that last maybe two weeks but consume your soul
2.) Spacing out in class but loving to learn
3.) Swearing and slang while discussing deep academic topics

How to see whether a Chinese handmade teapot is well done or not - quality of the spout is an important standard.
cr: 承启 建水紫陶
This is a cool teapot video without any unnecessary comments in the notes whatsoever :) Why are people like this? :)
the reason why other ppl with learning/developmental disabilities can't read like they did in middle school & high school was because books were the easiest way to access serotonin & dopamine since you weren't allowed to use your phone, & they also gave you something to hyperfocus on as a means of mental escape. entering college & the adult world means you can freely use your tech so you can access serotonin/dopamine faster, making books seem less "interesting" in comparison when in reality your mind is just used to the instant gratification, which isn't bad at all. it's like making your own dinner vs ordering out.
chasing that rat poison high....

thank you for getting me to read the funniest sentence upon earth
Me, seeing the logo in the bottom corner: and what chocolate bullshit is Mr Guichon up to today?
I just love that this is like...chocolatier work, art, engineering, and craftsmanship all at once. The amount of talent and knowledge it takes to do something like this is just....wow.
(if you click the link it goes to his instagram, it's full of chocolate sculpting videos)
bro im gonna CRY i didnt know this 🥺
I'm so tired all the time.
i am going to create an environment that is so toxic
The dumb joke is that when cyanobacteria first invented photosynthesis, the oxygen they released was extremely toxic to all the other bacteria that existed at that point. Photosynthesis was so successful and they released so much oxygen that they nearly wiped out all life on earth.
This is called the Great Oxygenation event, or the Great Oxygen Catastrophe, it is to date one of the largest mass extinction events in earth’s history, and as far as I know it’s the single most extreme event of an organism making the environment toxic for other organisms.
Which is always funny to think about from a human perspective, because pretty much all life *except* bacteria could not have evolved if this hadn’t happened.
The Archaea - the really old bacteria that existed before cyanobacteria - are still around, they just live in weird places now like hot springs and the deep ocean where the nasty oxygen can’t reach them.
Me: …The hell is it called the ‘drawing room’ for? Was drawing really such a wide-spread hobby, and if so, why do I never see any art equipment in the reconstructions of any of these rooms?
Historian, curator and documentary presenter Dr Lucy Wosley: Actually it was originally called the ‘withdrawing room’, as in the place one withdrew to, and where only family and important guests were allowed to enter. The name got shortened over time.
Me: Oooooohhhh
wait, so all those scenes where people are invited into the ‘drawing room’ are actually a declaration of intimacy and close friendship or otherwise close ties / importance?
Yes.
Writers, take notes.
This Mexican researcher hopes her invention can help replace single-use plastics.
Researcher Sandra Pascoe Ortiz invented a ‘plastic’ from cactus that biodegrades in soil in around a month’s time, and a few days in water.
So we cant use it to store fucking anything.
Thanks for the worthless gift.
Read the article—“single-use plastics” refers to plastics that are not used to store things long-term and are only used briefly before being disposed, such as plastic shopping bags, utensils, plates, cups, and straws. Obviously this is only one small partial solution to a huge problem that will require countless small solutions to truly solve, but that doesn’t make such inventions worthless.
I was more refering to anything with such a short shelf life would be actually pretty difficult to use espeically if you factor in water causing a faster degration duevto humanity.
The shelf life isn’t clarified in the article—it biodegrades in soil within a single month. Exposed to detritovores, fungi, bacteria, and moisture is a very different environment than a climate-controlled indoor cabinet.
This is in stark contrast to other biodegradable plastics, like those derived from corn starch, which must be “industrially composted” at high temperatures in specially-controlled conditions that cannot be replicated at home. It’s better than plastics which do not biodegrade on a human timescale at all, but being able to compost single-use plastics in your backyard compost bin without carting them off to special facilities or filling up landfills is huge.
Sperm whale mimics a spinning diver.
Humans: *encounters Earth’s Largest Carnivore, who would could swallow them whole, probably*
Human: … Spin?
Earth’s largest carnivore, with a brain that weighs almost as much as this naked beach ape*: SPIN!
WHAT DO YOU MEAN SPERM WHALES ARE CARNIVORES
I THOUGHT THEY ATE KRILL AND STUFF LIKE OTHER WHALES
Nope! Sperm whales eat extremely large deep-sea squids, like the Giant and Colossal Squids. They have also been known to opportunistically eat dead whales, sharks, and seals, but not actively hunt them. They got real big teeth for it too:
However, they only have teeth on thier bottom jaw! they have corresponding holes in their top jaw for the teeth to lock into, which makes hanging onto a slippery, boneless squid:
It should be noted that the human here isn’t in particular danger of being eaten on purpose, but an accidental swing of it’s multi-ton head, a clip from the teeth, or being directly in the line of it’s sonar could seriously injure or kill them- Divers that have been in the direct line of echolocation for a sperm whale calf have described being hit with the soundwave like “being kicked by a horse” and some have suffered internal organ damage. Sperm whales, like other large whales, aren’t particularly aggressive towards humans, but they are still very large wild animals who behave in unpredictable ways.
I know that in US waters, it’s illegal to intentionally come within 300 yards of any whale or dolphin, and if one appears closer you should turn off your engine or stop paddling to avoid accidental injury to you or it. This human is doing something dangerous and ill-advised, but it’s still hopeful that we can love something like a 130,000 lb deep-diving, squid-eating Oceanic former ungulate.
Im.sorry I’ve lived my entire life not realizing that echolocation could possibly be felt and I have to come to terms with the fact that whales have sonic attacks
