"You didn't use a single Pokémon in that fight?!" Rei exclaims loudly over the band playing on the steps of the Galaxy Building. "Not one?!" Akari shakes her head, hopping to the side as the Construction Corps Bidoofs run by her towards the tables.
"Everything was a blur! It was more like fighting a frenzied Noble than a normal battle, the only Pokémon that managed to leave its ball was Palkia," She responds, grinning as she slides onto a bench, Rei sitting beside her. "I ended up using Balms the whole time, and there wasn't time for a fight. Threw the Origin Ball and got body-slammed with Roar of Time-"
"Thought you promised to come back in one piece Akari," Rei admonishes, frowning. She shrugs, sheepish.
"I did come back in one piece, only had a couple wisps and I recovered another memory." She explains, hearing him sigh. "The Distortion closed, Dialga and Palkia are caught and safe, and I am one step closer to recovering my memories completely." Rei smiles, shaking his head.
"Well now we can get back to working on the Professor's Pokédex," he says, smile growing to a grin when Laventon comes over to sit on the other side of Akari on the bench. "Isn't that right Professor? We get to turn our sights back to the Pokédex?" Rei says over the first cluster of fireworks illuminating the sky.
"Quite right!" Laventon agrees, "I daresay we've made quite significant progress, all in all. Though we could afford to put a little more effort into expanding our research tasks. While I appreciate your efforts in researching the Zorua and Zoroark native to Hisui, Rei, there are other Pokémon in the Icelands." Akari snorts, giggling at how red Rei's face gets. He'd likely hide behind his mask if he was wearing it tonight. Laventon crosses his arms in thought. "But it is hard to know how far to go in pursuit of some reports. Certain Pokémon have only been mentioned in Hisui's legends after all. Who's to say that they even exist!"
"Well we know that the Twin Lords of Space and Time are real, as are the Lake Guardians, so there's a high chance the others are real as well," Akari points out, flinching at a particularly loud firework exploding in the air. Rei and Laventon agrees in varying hums, and she leans back against the table, her fingers picking at the dirt stuck in her mega bracelet. Rei notices her picking, and he bumps her knee with his gently.
"Too bad you didn't get to use Stel at all." He says, and she chuckles lightly.
"Nahh, I don't think he likes mega evolving anyway, so it was a win-win." She tells him, gesturing behind them towards the farms on the western side of the village. "Besides, Colza's grown fond of Stel, so whenever he's not sleeping in the Pastures he's over there. Worked out in the end, using Balms only." Rei frowns, thinking back to when Akari and Irida told him about the Lake Trials- specifically the one in the Crimson Mirelands.
"Where did those Balms come from? It doesn't make any sense that Dialga would create those for you, being frenzied and all." He asks.
"Was wondering the same thing actually," She hums, seeing Captain Cyllene on the far end of the street by the Ginkgo Guild wagon. Akari's eyes narrow, trying to focus through the darkened sky, the lanterns, and fireworks booming above them at various intervals. The Captain is speaking to Volo, and she hums in thought.
It wouldn't make sense for a frenzied Pokémon such as Dialga to provide Balms to stop it- Azelf was different after all, that was a test of her resolve. The idea of using Balms against the Lord of Time never crossed any of their minds during all this, all the focus was on crafting the Origin Ball. But there the Balms were, hundreds of them ready for her to use. "...Maybe Dialga was able to control itself one last time and create the Balms before the frenzy took it over?" Akari finishes her thought, watching Volo nod excitedly at whatever Cyllene had just said.
"Maybe," Rei agrees, hearing a howl further down Canala Avenue on the other side of the bridge. His hand reaches up to his hair almost on instinct, going to pull the mask he isn't wearing tonight down over his face. The momentary confusion on his face makes her chuckle quietly.
"You alright?" She asks while he blinks, getting up. Rei's face is warm again, embarrassed once more at the forgetfulness.
"Y-yeah, yeah." He stutters, clearing his throat. "I think that was Minami, I should go get her before the fireworks finale," Akari waves as he heads over the bridge towards the houses. Her eyes drift upwards towards the night sky, the dark blue and sparkling stars. Mount Coronet takes a few moments to find in the north-eastern sky now that there's no Distortion breaking above it. She wishes she could have spent more time at the Temple of Sinnoh before Dialga shattered most of the statues and the roof. In the swirls of her memories she faintly remembers stories about that place by a different name, told by-
"I hear that you're returning to your pokédex efforts!" Volo's voice breaks her thoughts, Akari looking up at the Gingko Guild member, minus his backpack. Its a little strange not seeing him with that, though why would he be carry it during the celebration.
"Captain Cyllene just tell you that?" Akari asks, Professor Laventon leaving the table to go join in the festivities. Volo sits on her left side, his grin bright.
"Yes she did indeed, and I find myself wondering just how you're going to do that with those more difficult to find Pokémon." He says, tapping his chin with his index finger. "Perhaps you'll need a consultant to Hisui's myths and legends if you wish to get the full scope. Good thing I showed up then!"
"You sound like Melli," Akari laughs, tapping her foot along with the band's music. "I might let you help if you answer a question first."
"Oh?" He hums, shifting to face her properly. His elbow rests on the table and he rests his chin on his hand. "Do ask then, Akari." She tilts her head, pointing a finger at him.
"You made the Balms I used against Dialga, didn't you." Akari states, watching Volo's face for any change in expression. He lets out a short laugh as he taps her index finger with his.
"I should have known you would've caught on," He chuckles, swinging his leg over the bench as he looks out onto the crowd. "Mistress Cogita and I were discussing the Balms you used to quell the frenzied nobles and I thought that you having those wouldn't hurt. Seems I was right in my wariness."
"Seems you were," She agrees. "Thank you Volo." The sincerity in her voice makes the Guild merchant pause. Akari has every right to be angry at the Galaxy Team for forcing her into the responsibility of defeating both Lords, yet here she is, choosing the path of peace. Enjoying the celebration, not holding a grudge. He's not quite sure what to make of the Skyfaller still, the teenager surprising him with each meeting.
"I would recommend that we begin our venture at the Heights Camp in the Fieldlands. If memory serves me right, there is a carved mural just behind where the camp is set up." Volo says, getting up from the bench.
"I'll meet you there then," Akari responds, her attention shifting as she sees a blur of red and white fur booking it through the townspeople towards the houses by the main gate. Rei chases after the Zorua, and Akari can faintly see the door to his home opening and shutting. The sky bursts alive with fireworks, and Akari covers her ears, watching the display of colors and flames.
.....
The early morning mist spreads across the Obsidian Fieldlands, the sun barely in the sky. It surprises her that even with the Distortion atop Mount Coronet gone there are still Distortion Storms appearing in the region. Akari's ears pop when she enters the storms barrier, the morning mist and the darkened air making it harder to see her surroundings.
A pair of Sylveons stroll by without a spare glance, which is surprising given that the last time she was in a distortion here in the Horseshoe Plains she got chased around by a Sylveon and a Leafeon. Akari watches them continue on, her vision shifting to a figure hiding by a tree. The haze makes it hard to make out the figure in its entirety, but the sword still at his side clears the picture. It's her counterpart. If he's here then maybe they can compare memories, see if any he's recovered are different than hers. A collaborative effort for both their sakes.
The storm crackles and the mist thickens, obscuring the world around her. Akari keeps low to the ground as she makes her way towards where the Alternate her was crouched. But when she gets to the tree he's gone, all that's left is bent grass. She sighs, standing up and looking around, suspicious about the lack of Pokémon in this area of the storm.
"Odd.." She mutters under her breath, ducking behind the tree when a Gengar rises from a portal nearby. Akari didn't come in here looking for Pokémon, just wanting to pick up whatever materials came through the distortion.
"... should have waited!" a voice comes across the storm and haze, Akari's head whipping around.
There shouldn't be anyone else here aside from herself and the Pokémon, and her counterpart just disappeared. The Gengar hears the voice too and disappears with a purple pop. The voice was a boy's she thinks, frustrated maybe? It's becoming harder to see with the haze growing thicker and Akari stands from the tree, coming out to the low grass trying to hear the voice again. Trying to ascertain which way it was coming from.
"We didn't have... wait!" A second voice breaks through the storms thunder, a girl's this time. Two voices, new to hear. Akari's stomach fills with nervousness as she grabs a scatter bang from her bag. Maybe it was a Gengar's illusion trying to get the jump on her. The mist is like soup, murky and dark in the storm's night hue. The voices come and go, she turns around, seeing two silhouettes near the taller grass. Akari slowly moves forward, jumping when the first voice breaks through the storm again.
"So you go running into the storm with no protection!?" He argues, the sounds much clearer now. His shadow is slightly taller than the girl's. "The Pokémon that've been seen in these things have been more dangerous than the usual kinds that live here!"
"The Pokémon are scared! Lashing out because they're being upended and frazzled!" The girl counters, her hands reaching through the haze to try to wipe it away. Akari keeps back, tucking the Scatter Bang away. "What's outside the storm now? Are we still in the same location?" The mystery girl turns to walk towards the closest edge of the distortion.
"I have no idea and we aren't finding out!" He says loudly, grabbing the other's shirt collar to tug her back. The misty haze is like a wall between them now, and Akari wonders if they can see her silhouette too. "What's your dex sayin'?" He asks, his hand raising to ruffle his hair.
"Dunno, Rotom's been shut down since we walked in here, I think the electricity in the air is messing with them." The girl says, flinching as storm crackles around them. "Your Xtransceiver not working either huh?" He huffs, pushing the sleeve of his jacket up to press at the device on his wrist.
"Doubt it, the dang thing probably got its charge drained by the sto-" he stops when his Xtransceiver beeps a connection positive. Akari jumps at the noise from across the haze wall. "That's impossible."
"Oh Arc..." The girl gasps, grabbing the boy's wrist. "Call it."
"That's impossible," he repeats, the panic making his voice crack in places. "There's no way that's even possible how could it even connec-"
"Call it!" She demands, shock in her voice.
"Okay okay!" He exclaims, pressing a button on the side. There's a ringing as the device dials, and Akari feels her heart stop as the Arc-Phone comes to life in her bag. The other two hear it as well and they shout in surprise, looking around for the source.
She fishes the phone from her bag, holding it as it vibrates and rings. It's acting like a proper phone, not some altered item, yet Arceus's tampering still affects it- the name of the caller and photo glitched, stained with golden ink, obscuring the knowledge from her. There's no way to answer it, no button to press. Her eyes lift to see the mysterious two looking around for the source of this sound.
The distortion crackles and the wind picks up. Its almost time for it to disperse. The arc-phone ends its ringing, and the boy shouts in frustration. His fingers jab at the device on his wrist, trying to call again. The girl has her own device out, trying to wake up the Rotom up inside. Akari's frozen as the wind pushes the haze away, the arc-phone slipping from her hand into the grass below.
The boy is wearing a coat similar to Ingo's, the color sunfaded to a grey hue. A plain white button-up shirt with a loosened blue tie. Grey slacks and a pair of scuffed shoes. The boy's hair is brown- but it seems to be in the stages of turning a silvery color- the roots showing this new change. Akari's eyes shift to the girl, her ears ringing.
Her clothes were better suited for warmer weather. An orange top with flowers across it, with a pair of dark blue shorts and hiking boots to match. The girl's hair is in two braids and bangs, a pale green sort of shade, with two sprigs near her ears still dyed a dark brown. Akari's heart thumps painfully in her chest, her head throbbing in pain as she stands there in shock.
A pained noise slips from her throat and both their heads jerk up, shock filling their faces. The way they stare, it burns Akari through worse than the Roar of Time. She can feel Yveltal's cry in the back of her mind, yelling at her that she knows them and they know her.
The storm cracks a final time, the sky losing its purple tint. As the sun breaks through the haze both of them reach out for her, a name breaking the silence- cut off before she can hear it. They disappear like ghosts, their hands passing through Akari like mist.
The Arc-phone beeps on the ground and she looks down, seeing the MISSED CALLS (99+) across the screen. Those words disappear in a flash of gold, the map and log of requests and missions returning. She sinks to her knees, not registering the hot tears rolling down her face yet.
They recognized her. She knew them.
........
Volo was expecting Akari to beat him to the Heights Camp. He even slept in today, letting the sun warm him as he woke from his slumber. Completely relaxed yet burning with excitement at the new challenge ahead, assisting the Skyfaller in her research of Hisui's myths and legends. It would be a wonderful thing if she were able to catch them all. The things they could all learn firsthand from those Pokémon. The possibilities of what they could do. Footsteps echoing break him from his thoughts, and he turns to see her walking up the pathway to the camp.
"Ah! There you are! I was beginning to wonder if you wore yourself out too much during the celebration yester..." He trails off, seeing the tear streaks visible down her face. How utterly disarmed she seems. "...day. What happened?"
She stops before him, unable to meet his gaze. Hands clench and unclench as she tries to get a grasp on her words, trying to speak without tears destroying her words before they can even make it out. Volo's never seen her like this- not after that Gyarados's Hyper beam nor when she snapped at him when he brought her to Cogita. No, he has never seen her this distraught. Only one thing comes to mind that could get him this way, and could it be possible its the same for her? It tugs something in him, not pity but something... other.
"Akari," He reaches for her hands, attempting to give her something to focus on. She grips them with such a tightness he's worried she may break his fingers. "Tell me." Her breathing is labored and painful, but after a few minutes she relaxes her grip, lifting her head to meet his eyes.
"I saw my friends," Her voice is weak, hoarse from screaming. Akari swallows thickly, letting his hands go. "In the storm, I saw them and- and they tried calling me and that stupid phone-" Her words stop, realizations visible as her face screws up into a scowl. "Tell me everything you know about Arceus."
The smile on Volo's face could not have appeared faster.
..........
"See those patterns modeled after Pokémon?" Volo asks, standing beside the carved rock. Akari sits on the ground in front of him, listening while eating a bit of a Potato Mochi she packed. She holds out a piece, Volo taking it while gesturing to the carvings. "I've come to think that they might be letters–rather like hieroglyphs, if you will. I've inspected ruins across the region and have concluded that they all seem to tell the same tale. The tale of a brave soul who, together with the Pokémon at his side, went on a journey to search for the fragments of an all-encompassing deity."
"Arceus," Akari says. Volo nods, taking a bite out of the mochi piece.
"Exactly! Just what I expected from the Hero of Hisui." He says, glad to see her eyes roll. She's smiling again, the redness around her eyes settling down. "Arceus- creator of the universe and everything around us. The Original One. Who plucked you up from your home and made you its Champion." Akari's nose scrunches up at that and she finishes the last bite of her mochi before tucking the rest away for later.
"Do those carvings tell of how this ancient Hero met with Arceus?" She asks, popping her knuckles absentmindedly. "All you described was the hero collected fragments of it, but was that scales or shed skin or..."
"Close, you are close. The fragments described must be the plates that you have been collecting all this time. Gifted to you by the Nobles of Hisui. There's writing on the back of them, have you never noticed?" He says. Surprised, Akari takes her bag off, pulling out each of the plates she's collected so far. Ten plates, all spread on the ground. Volo comes and sits down near her, picking up the Mind Plate she received from Lord Wyrdeer. "See? This one says, 'The Original One breathed alone before the universe came.'" Akari starts flipping the plates over, seeing that each has a couple lines of text etched into them. Each different.
"How have I never noticed that before?" She asks aloud, snagging the Mind Plate from Volo. "I have ten plates, but if each of these plates corresponds to a type a pokemon can have then.."
"Go on..." Volo says, resting his chin on his hands as he sits cross-legged. He's smiling, enjoying this. Akari looks at the plates she's collected so far.
"Mind for Psychic, Insect for Bug.." She begins mumbling, counting. "There's still eight missing. Uhm, dragon, fairy, normal, rock, steel, dark, ghost, and fighting. If the ancient hero considered these plates to be pieces of Arceus, then wouldn't collecting them all give us a better chance of meeting it? We'd have to find the other eight too." Akari looks at him, her head tilting as she watches his expression. "Volo?"
"It's not everyday someone catches up to me this quick," he chuckles, pulling out a map and laying it over the plates. "I was thinking the same thing, finding the rest. According to my investigations there should be one in the heart of the Grueling Grove. Have you been there yet?" Akari shifts, leaning to look at the paper map. Its worn and there's scribbles on the outside, along with marks of specific trees and materials. In the bottom corner a Gingko Guild symbol is stamped. Akari nods, tapping the trees in the marked area.
"Went over there once, got chased into the river by the Alpha Vespiquen. Haven't been back since." She says, moving the map and picking up the plates. Her Arc-Phone beeps in her bag and she pauses. Volo looks over at the device peeking from under the flap, then at Akari.
"Do you want to swap? I'll hold that device while you take the map?" He offers, seeing how tense she's become. Akari stares at the Arc-Phone, and for a split second Volo swears there was a change in her pupil. Maybe it was the sunlight, but it almost looked white instead of black.
"N..no, no. No it's okay, I'll keep my phone on me." Akari says, blinking a couple times. She sniffs sharply, wiping her nose on her jacket sleeve before putting plates away in her bag. "Thank you though." She tells him, seeing that the Arc-Phone marked the Grueling Grove as a destination. Volo nods understandingly, giving her a smile.
"Let's get started then. Faster we find the plates, the sooner you get to make Arceus answer your queries." He says, and she let's out a weak laugh.
"We don't even know if this will work." Akari counters, closing her bag and putting it back on.
...........
The Alpha Vespiquen was hovering in the clearing between the trees and the pond. The Bug Pokémon hadn't noticed Akari and Volo yet thankfully. According to Volo's notes the plate that's in this area should be somewhere in the pond, but they won't be able to get over to it without alerting the Alpha Vespiquen to their presence. That and Sneasler won't carry anyone if there's a risk of an Alpha attack.
She sends out Opal, the Luxray's Thunder Shock catching the Alpha Pokémon off guard. Vespiquen shakes off the inital shock before using the surrounding rocks to fuel it's Power Gem, the energy filled rocks pelting Opal. Akari turns her head, checking to see if her Pokémon isn't too badly hurt. Opal lunges forward with a mouth full of flames, burning a large portion of Vespiquen's lower half. Burned and hovering low to the ground, the Alpha Pokémon buzzes painfully as Akari throws an ultra ball at it. Smoke comes out in puffs from Opal's mouth as they both watch the expel flare shoot up.
"Good job Opal," Akari tells her Luxray, running her fingers through the fur on her head. Opal purrs, and bumps her head into Akari's body. The Pokémon walks past the ultra ball on the ground, sniffing around in the grass before picking up something and bringing it back to her trainer.
To Akari's surprise, it's the plate they were looking for. "Oh wow." She says, eyes wide. Akari clicks Opal back into her ball, watching her Luxray zip away in a swish of energy. Volo comes up next to her, holding his Gingko Guild map.
"Why did that Alpha Pokémon have the plate we were looking for? Wh.. All my research said the plate was in the pond!" He exclaims, shoving his map into Akari hands as he fishes out his notebook. She fumbles the map and the plate, opting to let the plate drop to the ground as she keeps the map from ripping. "What is a Vespiquen doing with a plate of such mythological importance!"
"Maybe it went to get a drink and the plate got stuck to its body, it is a honeycomb Pokémon after all." She counters, rolling the map up and tucking it into his backpack as he passes by. Volo's pacing, muttering as he flips through his notes. Picking up the new plate, she brushes the dirt off and puts it in her bag. "Volo its not a big deal if the Vespiquen was holding the plate or not!" He groans audibly, tossing his book behind him in a frustration. The height and arch it gets before landing makes Akari swallow back a laugh.
"It's the Stone Plate, Vespiquen is a Bug and Flying Type, it doesn't... it doesn't make sense!" He exhales harshly, taking a breath as he walks over to retrieve his notebook. "In any case, that's the only other plate that I had information about, so.... that's that!" Volo strides back over to Akari, taking off his hat and itching his head. She's not used to seeing him without his hat, his blonde hair in a bun. "Time to find to the rest of the plates, and thankfully I know just the person."
"Cogita?" Akari asks. Volo puts his hat back on, still buzzing with a bit of annoyance but keeping it reined in.
"The one and only Mistress Cogita, yes. You haven't had the chance to properly thank her for her help in obtaining the Red Chain and I haven't thanked her for help in making those Balms." He says, gesturing between the both of them. "All the more reason to pay her a visit."
