Gambling in Winner Takes All, Part 1 was one of my favorite bits to write. As BR13 will tell you, I’ll watch just about any poker game. Texas Hold’em being my favorite to play (less luck needed), but five card draw (the game played in the chapter) seemed more like Tsunade’s favorite (more luck involved to be honest). With that said, I’ve not actually played any pachinko. Wish I could though, arcade game made into a gambling game way more entertaining than slots. BR13 doesn’t like to gamble (well bet in general), I feel as if I make up for it (betting, I’m poor a shit, so I don’t gamble with money outside of special occasions).

“Hey, the kid’s got better things to do then be your ace in the hole,” Jiraiya complained. That, and there was no way the kid could get his technique down in three days. “How about a week of training, and he gives you everything in his wallet?”

“No,” Naruto replied. “Three days? I’ll have it down in two!”

“Kid! Are you…” But before Jiraiya could finish the gaki was already gone in a puff of smoke.

Did you know...

The season surrounding Sakura Matsuri is my personally favorite season. It’s the best time of the year. You just got to love those cherry blossoms. That’s why we chose it, that and it fit well with the story and timeline.

Daily Grind

With ironclad control earned from over eight years of serving with the Hyuuga Military Police, Yuusuke concentrated on his work not letting his frustration with the proprietor continuing to talk his ear off interrupt his focus. Bent over the third tea blend of the afternoon, Yuusuke really shouldn’t have been surprised at the constant chatter. With only two teas down, he’d been subjected to a lengthy history of the barrels that Bojing-san preferred to ship his teas in, the shipping manifest for his normal delivery schedule and now a lengthy description for the structural design of the Golden Dragon.

‘And all before we’ve even gotten to the teas,’ he thought bitterly. It was irritating. Yuusuke just wanted to work in peace, but Bojing-san didn’t seem to get that, didn’t seem to understand concise conversation. No Hyuuga financed business should be this annoying, especially not when said business had been operating within the Hyuuga Quarter for nearly four years now.

Fashion of the World - The Po-Po

*Sigh* Always with the dramatics. The Hyuuga Police uniforms are based off this, but with shades of gray. If you’ve got a hard core memory, you might remember Naruto explaining that Police Force rank was based off the shades of gray. Light gray was low rank, while the darker the gray the higher the ranking. So Captain Daichiko is dark gray, but not as dark as the generals, and Hizashi wears black (he’s the only one who can wear all black, btw). There rank is stitched into the shoulder, and the skirt is based off their unit and division.

Personality traits: loud, brash, stubborn and extremely inappropriate

Favorite food: dango (do not threaten the dango)

Favorite activity: eating dango, however, leading a torture session comes in as a very close second

Behind the Veil

‘Your latest obsession will be your downfall, Orochimaru-sama,’ Kabuto thought as he put the profile of the heir away. Given what he knew, a fixation on the Hyuuga’s destruction would only lead to carelessness, and carelessness to ruin. Kumo had already experience it’s bitter taste, and would tempt fate again because of rage and misguided pride. And his master…

Kabuto shook his head lightly. He had no plans on being anywhere near his master when this finally blew up in his face. ‘No, Orochimaru-sama. I won’t have you dragging me to hell with you. I’ve still got to become the god you never were.’

Did you know...

Interestingly enough there are seven gods of luck (or Seven Gods of Fortune, shichi fukujin) in Shinto religion. In fact, Naruto has mentioned them before (there’s a culture corner in there somewhere, but that was so long ago, I’ma going to say this anyway). Luck and Naruto are pretty important. If it’s impossible, or the odds are heavily stacked against him, then our boys going to pull through (probably the only one who could...). But what are these gods?

Ebisu - the only god of the seven who’s origins is purely Japanese, he’s the god of properity and wealth in business and agriculture (not to be mistaken for Inari, who is also a god of agriculture among other things)...

Daikokuten - the god of commerce and prosperity with Buddhist origins

Benzaiten - the only female god of luck, her origins are found in Hinduism. With literary talents, beauty and music, I’d place her as a god of talents (I see you artsy folks)

Fukurokuju - the god of wisdom, luck, longevity, wealth and happiness, this god originated from China (weirdly enough this dude can resurrect the dead)

Joruojin - the god of elderly and longevity (Buddhist origins)

Hotei - god of fortune, guardian of the children, god of popularity (Zen priest)

Bishamonten - god of fortune in war in battle (Hinduism), and is also associated with authority and dignity... (there’s more here, but...)

Luck of the Gods

And nothing could justify it, the terror. Even with his best friend by his side it had been unrelenting, unmistakable. Only just bearable because he hadn’t been alone. He feared what it would be like if she hadn’t been there. Hadn’t been beside him, her presence a familiar hum at the back of his mind. He wondered what it would have felt like if he’d been alone.

‘But I wasn’t alone,’ Naruto thought with some conviction. Willing the rather depressing thoughts to leave his mind. With Hinata-hime by his side, it seemed that his demons were finally bearable. And that had to mean something. No, it had to mean more than just something.

Naruto closed his eyes and glowing red stared back at him. Cold and terrifying as they always were, but he didn’t flinch away from his demon, his nightmare. Not this time. Not when Hinata-hime was still with him. He clutched the small little fox token harder, a reminder that she thought of him even when she was busy. Even when she had the weight of the world on her shoulders. He was not forgotten.

Personality traits: Level headed, rational, practical

Vice: Sport’s gambling (fun fact, she actually lost a good amount of ryo on the Konoha Chuunin Exams)

Favorite activity: Taking care of Tonton and reading medical journals

Fun fact: Shizune is actually fairly good at card games, although she doesn’t like to play.

Legendary Loser

“Hey, Nee-san?”

“Hai, Haru-san?”

He scratched his head in confusion, “Why’s everyone calling Baa-san a loser? She hasn’t lost once, and I would know.” There he paused, pointing to his chest as he continued, “I helped open today.” He nodded seriously, making sure she understood how responsible he was. “So I’d definitely know, you know ‘cause she’s practically been here all day. And Baa-san doesn’t seem like a Legendary Loser to me.”

Fashion of the World - The Noble Strut

This week on fashion of the world, we introduce the nobility of Fire Nation. Traditionally, the nobility wear fine robes in the ‘ancient’ Japanese and Chinese fashion (Kimonos and Hanfu), but the youth of this era (just like every other culture) have fallen into a new craze... suits. 

Specifically, water style suits which is just code for western suits (before they had collars attached to the shirts, yeah we’re talking old west baby). But don’t worry that doesn’t mean they’ve lost their heritage. As you may have noticed from this week’s chapters, our nobility still maintain the traditional long hair fashion that was prevalent in most ‘ancient’ East Asian cultures. 

Styled in this way, you’ll see a lot of topknots which are bound in various fashions. As we’ve borrowed heavily from the Chinese culture when it comes to the Fire Nation nobility, all unmarried men will bind their hair with pins and combs rather then little hat like things (for the life of me I can’t remember the name right now). 

Of course, these aren’t just any types of hair accessories. No, these are elaborate, gold or jade or some other ornate gem meant to show just how filthy rich they are. It’s actually kind of awesome how ornate these pins could get. Kind of reminded me of gold teeth or something just as insignificant. Certainly worthy of a noble strut.

Interlude I

“Okay so Awesome Ninja Letters Part 2.”

“Hey bossman, did you really have to start with that?”

“Yeah, seems silly when you say it after Hinata-hime’s letter.”

A thin brow rose at the sound of rustling fabric filled the recording static, mildly amused at the start of her friend’s correspondence.

“Ahem,” Uzumaki-kun’s throat cleared before he began again, “Okay now that we’re alone, Super Awesome Ninja letter part 2. It sounds just fine to me…” The last part was said softly, almost as if he’d mumbled it under his breath likely forgetting that the recorder was still held close to his mouth.

It was very like the friend she remembered.

Did you know...

So, you might be wondering why Hinata and not Katsuo (the Daimyo’s son) is involved in the ‘adult’ meetings. Katsuo is older, so why is he treated differently? The root of this difference is that the Hyuuga are a ninja ‘royal’ family, while Katsuo is based off of Chinese imperial lines and is still considered a child at this point. We’ve made it a point thus far to emphasize that Genin are seen as adults. With that said, the Daimyo respects the ninja culture, and see Hinata in this way.

Interesting fact, the Hyuuga’s usually pass on their clan head status (i.e. change clan heads) every twenty years or so. As such, the First Family normally turns over control when the heir is eighteen years old.
