SubVersive: Resistance is Survival

Currently writing and producing B(lack)ness & LATINI(dad) a Joint Print and Audio Chapbook. Coming Fall 2015 This blog will be focused on contemporary politics especially regarding Identity Politics and social/political activism. Through a mix of spoken word poetry, short essays, music, and more, I hope to expose the true nature of White Supremacy and Racism, and interrogate the American conception of “Race” and its subsequent effects for society. However, it would be embarrassingly negligent if I did not take an intersectional approach to my activism seeing as oppression does not pick and choose to oppress in isolated, clear-cut manners. Feel free to share my work as long as you give me credit. Also, please follow me on other platforms and connect with me as a human. Please understand that I live the oppression I speak of. I cannot separate myself from the words I speak and write so if you’re looking for objectivity, you are in the wrong place. I hope that these words incite change, inspire further expression, but most importantly, that they humanize the people we have fooled ourselves into seeing otherwise. This is our time. How Mobile Factories are Building Homes from Rubble

Dutch-made “Mobile Factories,” the size of two shipping containers, are turning rubble left behind from wars, natural disasters and urban development into earthquake-resistant building materials. The recycling process not only builds homes, but solves a pollution issue.

In an effort to rebuild homes and hospitals, a single Mobile Factory processes rubble, which is sorted and separated to allow concrete to pass through a crushing stage. A filtering process removes any hard-to-find metallic objects from the concrete, which is later liquefied.

After preparing the mixture, 20x10x10cm (8x4x4in) Q-Brixx blocks take about 12 hours to cast. Blocks are stacked and interlocked without requiring cement or mortar, similar in design to Lego bricks.

In a world that only sees things in Black and White, where do light skinned multiracial people fit into the picture? B(lack)NESS & LATINI(dad) explores the liminal status of being Black, Latino, a father, low income, and more. This poetry collection is accompanied by illustrations curated by independent artists, with a special emphasis on artists of color and artists in the LGBTQIA community (or both). Through the use of spoken word poetry, Hip-Hop, oral histories and auto-ethnography, this project illustrates the power of the narrative and how it embodies a radical challenge to the popular narratives that are spread about race, marginalized people, and resistance. [Obama] came out, started speaking and started to get into his speech on how wonderful everything is, and I couldn’t help but think about the conditions that my LGBTQ Latino/Latina, especially trans women of color, are facing in detention. So, to me, that was the moment I had to speak up. I had to raise awareness to the President and to everyone else watching that I’m not just going to celebrate, when my trans sisters are facing a lot of violence in the detention centers. [Trans women are facing] sexual and physical abuse, and I just had to send a message.

Being Mixed Race: Am I A Human Rprschach Test

“Just last week I was standing at a bus stop when a gentleman; a complete stranger came and joined me. Nothing unusual about that, we then politely nodded at each other and a conversation started up. Me: “Evening” Stranger: “Evening” Me: “it’s still quite warm isn’t it” Stranger: “yes it is”; pause; “excuse me mate, but were do you come from?” Me: “Ipswich” Stranger: “no, you know, were do you originate from” Me: “I originate from Ipswich, my mum is English and my dad is Jamaican” Stranger, sounding surprised: “Really I wouldn’t have thought you were Black, I’d have thought you were Italian or Spanish or something” Me, politely smiles: “yeah, I sometimes get that” Now I wasn’t offended by this and this wasn’t the first time or probably won’t be the last time that I’ll have this conversation. I am a light skinned mixed race person with loose curly hair. I have spent most of my life with people questioning my racial identity and for a while I was left questioning it myself. My random conversation had me asking myself why is it that people feel the need to question a complete stranger as to where they are from. I would never dream of walking up to a stranger and asking, “excuse me, where are your parents from”. My thought is there is this assumption that brown means foreign. I have a friend whose background is one English parent and one foreign born parent; the same as me but their foreign born parent is Russian, they have never had their status as being British questioned; they have not faced that assumption. A Rorschach test is a psychological test used to test peoples’ perceptions and interpretations and at times I feel that being mixed race, we face that.”
