Aiko turned off the main road, her black stiletto heels clicking sharply against the uneven cobblestones of Liverpool's ancient streets. The city had its charm, but tonight, the cobblestones were her enemy. With each step, she felt the delicate heels teeter precariously beneath her, as if they might snap at any moment. The anticipation of the night ahead weighed heavily on her, and her pace slowed, instinctively resisting the unknown that awaited her.
The air was thick with the rumble of loud electronic beats, spilling out of nearby clubs and bars, mingling with the sharp laughter of drunken crowds. Her heart raced with each passing footstep as the world around her seemed to grow more chaotic. Despite the invite clutched in her hand, the reality of the club loomed ahead, a place of whispers, shadows, and rumours that clung to the air like smoke. Was she ready? She wasn't sure. The closer she got, the more her stomach tightened with anxiety, but she couldn't turn back now.
The Club—Liverpool's most infamous hotspot, and yet the secrecy that shrouded it made it almost mythical. Word on the street was that it wasn't just any club, it was a world unto itself. Since its opening, the stories had spiraled beyond control, each more outrageous than the last. Models snorting cocaine in mirrored bathrooms, A-list actors betting exotic animals in the hidden, underground poker rooms, and bar staff who would cater to the highest bidder, regardless of the request. No one had ever seen the club's interior, of course—not with its ironclad no-phone policy. Even if you made it past the velvet ropes, you wouldn't be able to share what happened inside. It was said the club could be owned by anyone: cartel members, local gangs, or, more exotically, whispers of Yakuza ties had spread across the internet like wildfire.
What Aiko knew about The Club was shaped by nothing more than rumors, conspiracy theories, and YouTube deep dives, each video more exaggerated than the last. The most telling fact, however, was that the club's exclusivity had earned it a dangerous allure, attracting high-profile celebrities, wealthy socialites, and international models willing to pay astronomical sums to enter. A famous influencer, Natalia Alekseyev, had even been blacklisted for releasing a YouTube video exposing the club's shocking cover charge—more than £20,000 for access to the VIP cellar, a place that had once hosted royalty.
Aiko was nothing like the high-society figures that surrounded her. She wasn't a model, an actress, or royalty. Raised in Sheffield by her adoptive parents since she was five, Aiko's roots stretched far beyond this life. Her real parents lived in the small city of Nikko, north of Tokyo, where she had faint memories of walking across a large red bridge with them as a child. But those memories were overshadowed by tragedy. Her father was killed by a local gang, forcing her mother into hiding. Believing it was safer, her mother sent Aiko out of Japan. Despite the distance, they kept in touch through weekly letters, but lately, those letters had stopped. Aiko's last correspondence from her mother had hinted at something far more sinister— the gang had begun intercepting the letters. Without her mother's updates, Aiko felt more isolated than ever, trapped by a past she could never reveal to anyone. It was too dangerous. So, she played the role of a regular working-class girl, concealing the truth about her origins, even from those closest to her. However, here she was—her white hair catching the light as she quickened her pace, her breath shallow and uneven. The narrow alleyway opened up in front of her, and the towering structure of The Club loomed like a shadow, its blackened windows stretching from floor to ceiling, impenetrable and ominous.
Around the perimeter, a sea of models dressed in barely-there outfits lounged, all smiles and effortless beauty. Aiko tried to blend in as she joined the queue, her fingers nervously twisting the invitation in her hand. She had gotten the invite just two days ago. It had arrived unexpectedly, slipped into her bag at work with no note or explanation. Just the embossed invitation—The Club, exclusive access, Aiko. Her name, printed in smooth black ink. No signature. No sender.
The invite had seemed like some kind of mistake at first, an odd mix-up. But then the rumors began circulating at the office, whispers of the infamous club, and she couldn't help but wonder—who had sent it? The possibility had gnawed at her since the moment it appeared. The note was too deliberate, too precise for something random. Was it someone from the circle of high rollers she'd read about? A person from her past who had a hand in getting her inside?
Her thoughts flickered to the briefest of encounters, to a momentary conversation about The Club that had stuck with her, like a breadcrumb she couldn't quite place. There had been no mention of the sender, no one explicitly saying anything about The Club—and yet, the more she thought about it, the more she felt like someone wanted her here. But who?
At the front of the line stood an imposing squad of doormen, stone-faced and silent, their presence more than just physical—it was a statement of who controlled access to this world.
Above them, a massive LED sign flashed The Club in stark, glowing letters. The pulse of the music seemed to vibrate through her, but she barely noticed it anymore.
"ID?"
Aiko jumped at the bouncer's deep voice. She had forgotten, for a moment, that she wasn't just standing outside a club. She was standing on the threshold of something entirely foreign, something that didn't make sense to her yet.
"Here you go." She handed him her ID, her palms slick with sweat. The bouncer's eyes flicked over it, his gaze piercing, scrutinizing every detail.
Is it even real?
For a moment, she thought he wouldn't let her in, but then, his eyes softened just a fraction, and he grunted.
"You got the money?"
She blinked. It was £200—just to enter. It was a ridiculous amount, but the way the bouncer's eyes scanned her made her realise it wasn't a request. It was an expectation. She passed him the invitation and was about to reach for her purse.
"Oh it's you go straight in."
With a nod, the bouncer pushed open the extravagant glass doors, their silent weight both welcoming and forbidding. Confused Aiko stepped inside, her heels clicked on the cold, smooth marble floor. The air was thick, infused with the mingling scents of alcohol, perfume, and something faintly metallic. Her skin tingled with the realisation that she had crossed a line into a world that didn't play by the same rules.
The club's interior was a stark contrast to the outside world—dark and labyrinthine, with sharp angles and cold, polished surfaces. The center-piece was an elevated platform, shelves of spirits glowing under cool blue lights that reached up to the vaulted ceiling, creating a circular halo of neon above the dance floor. People moved like ghosts through the haze of flashing lights and strobe effects, their faces half-hidden behind smoke and flashing lights.
Aiko pushed through the throngs, trying to focus on the bar, the only refuge in sight. She needed a drink—anything to settle her nerves. As she neared, she craned her neck to see beyond the crowd, and then she saw her.
A woman dressed in a sharp black suit, her dark hair shoved into an updo through the haze of flashing lights Aiko could make out her face. She was perched on a balcony above the chaos, watching everything and everyone below. Her stillness was unsettling. She stood with arms crossed behind her back, scanning the crowd, as though she could see every secret, every lie in the room.
Then, their eyes met.
Aiko froze.
The woman's gaze was, penetrating, as if she could read Aiko's every thought, every hesitation. For a second, the world around Aiko seemed to pause. The pounding bass, the flashing lights, the murmuring crowd—all of it faded into the background.
Then the woman turned abruptly, spinning on her heel and marching off toward a private room, slamming the door with a force that reverberated through the space.
Aiko's pulse quickened, her breath shallow, as she stood frozen in the doorway, trying to make sense of the encounter. Had she just witnessed something she wasn't supposed to? Or was the woman simply someone of great importance, someone who had the power to make everyone feel like they didn't belong?
