Howdy folks! This is @i-identify-planes-in-posts, a new blog! This is my first Tumblr post, so IDK what to say really. What is says on the tin; give me pictures of aircraft - GA, Commercial, Military, whatever, and I'll try to identify them. I'll probably have non-plane ID stuff here, but I'll do my best to at least keep things tangentially related. OK this video is actually wildly inaccurate. First video is from an American Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship, firing a RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile. It has a maximum range of 9 km and warhead weight of 11.3kg, not enough to do effective damage against modern ships or onshore installations; its purpose is to defend ships against anti-ship missiles. Unit cost $905k USD. Second video is from a Dutch Goalkeeper CIWS. It has a maximum range of 3.5 km and fires 30mm shells, not enough to do damage against modern ships or onshore installations; its purpose is to defend ships against anti-ship missiles. Assuming it was firing for exactly 1 second (can't be bothered to count frames), it fired 70 rounds. As each round costs ~$136.7USD, the burst cost around $9569 USD. Third video is of a Russian-designed RBU-6000, firing what are likely RGB-60 anti-submarine missiles. These are ineffective against surface targets. The exact cost is unknown (Russia doesn't feel the need to keep taxpayers informed), but Indian production of these have a unit cost of $7,438.07 USD. Given the 12 fired, that salvo costed $89256.84 USD. Fourth video is of Russian AK-630. It has a maximum range of 5 km and fires 30mm shells, not enough to do damage against modern ships or onshore installations; its purpose is to defend ships against anti-ship missiles. Again, the exact cost is unknown (Russia doesn't feel the need to keep taxpayers informed), but we can extrapolate from goalkeeper costs. Given a 3-second burst, and 100 rounds per second of its autocannon, that burst cost around $41010 USD. Sixth and seventh video are of American Phalanx CIWS. It has a maximum range of 5 km (effective 1.5 km) and fires 20mm shells, not enough to do damage against modern ships or onshore installations; its purpose is to defend ships against anti-ship missiles. Assuming it was firing for 4 seconds (can't be bothered to count frames), it fired 300 rounds. As each round costs $30 USD, the burst cost around $9000 USD.

Not that large. We can do calculations to determine how big it really is. 24 million ft^2 (2.4x10^7 ft^2) is a bit less than 2.4 million m^2 ((2.4x10^6 m^2, in this house we use SI units). Taking the square root of that, we get a square lot with a side length of ~1.5x10^3 m, around 2.5 km^2, or a bit less than a square mile. This is a very reasonable area to fence. Numbers can be deceiving at first glance!

yeah, it was for my calc class and it was wondering how to get 24 mil with the smallest amount of fencing, and im pretty sure the answer i got was 4000 by 6000 ft? But my original point was just that that was a funny thing to see while i was doing math hw.

What is your opinion on the MIG-21?

I am a safety enthusiast, so I do not like machines that are designed to kill people 👍

Occasionally you can find historical warplanes being used for other purposes, like as educational tools or repurposed for firefighting or research, which can be cool. As far as I know there are no cases of the MIG-21 being put to any legitamite use outside of display. Apparently a company wanted to launch rockets with them but I don't think that ever happened. I might be interested to see a museum example if I happened to be at an aerospace museum that had one, because I think the Soviet aircraft industry was really interesting.

Call me an extremist but in general I think giant death machines are like, a net negative for human society. At worst they kill people (both intentionally and unintentionally, as their unecessarily high speed has led to collisions that killed hundreds of people) and at best they are a waste of brilliant engineering and state funding.

This one is right on the edge of being what I'd consider purely historical, given that very few global militaries still operate them, and I know most people have a purely intellectual interest in them given most people on here are not big fans of the Soviet Union (and if you are I think we've got bigger issues lol).

But I would caution you to really consider not only what your own motivations are in posting things like glorified images of active US military jets, but what the motivation of the original creator of those images was and what you're contributing to that cause by uncritically promoting the military might of countries engaged in active genocide. I'm sure if you're on this blog you have good values, just a reminder to check in and make sure you're acting in accordance with them, y'know? We could all stand to do that more often

Right, considering the current state of corporate politics on this site, and that it seems that only those affected seem to be actively speaking on the matter, this needs to be dragged out to a wider audience.
