Hello! Can you maybe explain how you come up with ideas for your illustrations? I looked at the wip game and they are really beautiful
Hellooo so sorry for the long wait for this answer ToT and tysm this means a lot!
I don't have a specific way I come up with ideas but basically a lot of things I put in there are linked to stuff I like
It will be a little bit hard to explain exactly how I come up with ideas without examples so I will put some old illustrations I never got time to explain ^^
Once again, tbhk is a work of fiction so you already got something to work on in my opinion. Characters have themes, objects and images linked to them already. That's something important to me personally.
For example for Aoi I link a lot of things according to the grim reaper arc, her want to disappear, her wish to die etc. Which is why I often represent her with stuff related to Vanities (Vanitรฉs) (since 2020 actually lol sorry Aoi)
And once again, there is a whole manga to be based on + AidaIro give us a lot of extra contents so I mix a little bit of everything to come up with ideas
The candle being blown out in direction of Nene is also something I thought of, Akane is the only one who is turning back entirely to look at her but Death Mask is already facing her. Nene is slowly turning back compared to the others students too.
This one too for example is pretty simple but I had fun with my inspirations!
I named it XII (12) referencing Akane's age when he became a clock keeper, you can see that his tie takes the place of the last mark on the clock. Exactly at the 6:30 mark, which is where the hands of the clock are when he stops time.
Which is by the way, an impossible time to obtain on a clock. The two hands cannot be placed like this, it's more the contrary of 12am/pm rather than 6:30, which represents really well for me the idea to Stop Time and Akane's contradicting existence as a clock keeper.
I made sure his hands were visible too in this position. To see that he is kinda see through, and because 12 is the number that was chosen to count time, because that's how you count it on your hands. It's from a sexagesimal system that comes from the Sumers (Mesopotamy). Basically you use the phalanx on your 4 fingers to count so 4x 3= 12. (and then you use the fingers on you other hands to multiply it, so 5x12 = 60)
I am not 100% sure about this explanation, because different explanations exist from different archeologs, but that's what I had in mind when doing this one! (Akanes' existence as a clock keeper, the idea of the present, and Time are stuff I REALLY like which is also why he gets a lot of illustration x))
One of my fav recent illustration (one year ago rip) is the Piranesi effect one!
For the first one I won't explain all the little details linked to the manga but you can find stuff like Mitsuba's altar next to Kou, details of Akane's rooms, Aoi's balcony, Nene's losing her magatama, the chairs of the clock keepers being reflected on the desk, etc...
And my main inspiration come from ofc Escher and Piranesi, that AidaIro directly mentionned too.
I may be wrong but when I saw this I immediately went 'oh okay this is Escher'. Since he is mostly famous for his impossible architecture, the idea that 'Are you really sure a floor can't also be a ceiling?' and that drawing is a deception.
(who is also the guy who created the Droste effect btw, witch hat atelier fans will know which illustration I am talking about :)))
And also the Penrose stairs which can be seen in movies like Inception. Anyways I love this guy. For this illustration though the title is from Piranesi, an architect who also did impossible architectures too, mostly known for his serie of Italian jails.
The note 'Feeling of unease and ambiguity, of Things out of place and time' is from a book that recount Piranesi works called 'The Piranesi effect' I just thought that the sentence represented well this kind of things. It also for me links to the feeling you can have while reading 'Piranesi' by Susanna Clarke (which will be adapted in an animation movie by Laika I am vibrating)
It may seems like smoke around Nene and Akane here but it's silver sand as described in chapter 125 too.
In the end I didn't make a lot of references to Escher and Piranesi but doing a layout that worked with the idea of walls and ceilings being mixed was already hard enough XDD I had a lot of fun with it mostly and I've been a fan of those two artists since middle school so it was mostly my love for their work that inspired me to do an artwork that took me a lot more thinking.
I do really simple stuff too with some ideas even if it doesn't really go in the way I want.
(Tsukasa, incredible on this blog I know)
The red house had always remind me of the book 'House of Leaves' by Mark Z. Danielewski and I linked it here to the short movie 'Falling Leaves' by Alice Guy. Where it tells the story of two sisters. One of them is really ill and the doctor announced that she will die by the time the last leave falls. Her little sister then began to attach the leaves back on the tree, to prevent her sister from dying.
The movie is really different from anything fomr tbhk ofc but I liked the idea so I tried something (I think it's really ugly in the end but you get the idea)
This one really is just 'Visual novels are cool and I like the song 'Song for all my lost ghost friends' XD Nothing more, Music influence me a lot too.
The only thing you can see is the little attributes next to Nene changing according to what is happening in the manga. Here she has a little lightning bolt because she has Kou's staff in her hands in the manga (chapter 3)
Once again the manga also gave us a lot of really cool scene that you can re interpret!
This one really is just chapter 118 in a different angle ahah
Idk if I really answered the questions but basically it's 'yo this seems cools/fun to do' most of the time :'))
Sometimes there is not directly inspirations but just, random thoughts from my mind and I mix everything. I really like slice of life fictions for example which made me create a whole au, and makes me draw a lot of little objects (mostly traditionnaly) etc
If you like something, if you're passionate about something, don't be shy about it in my opinion, you can mix it with what you draw! It will always be really fun to do!
Thank you sm for the question and so sorry for the long answer XDD I hope I gave you some ideas!
Also to note that where I'm coming from definitely influence my inspirations too. Doing researches is cool when you don't know some symbolism but I am gotta be really honest and sometimes I just vibe and it's really personal interpretations that can be seen through what I like, because my main focus is to have fun.
(disclaimer: ofc it depends on what you draw there are subjects where you can't can't just go and be ignorant about it because it directly impacts people! but that's not what I am talking about, it's mostly stuff like, wow I take signification for flowers from France rather than Japan. And If I come of as ignorant or insensitive I am all ears to advice and criticism)
