Maybe it's just me but I feel like the screenwriter/s of Love Between the Fairy and Devil missed an opportunity to write a scene in a more impactful/traumatizing way.
In ep 36, Dongfang begged Orchid to kill him while he is still able to contain Tai Sui.
In this scene, Orchid cried out in anguish "It's my destiny to save the world, not yours."
Dongfang responded, "But it's my mission to save you."
Look I will not deny that this scene left me devastated. But now that I've recovered a bit, I realized na they could've written it in a way that will turn me into an emotional basket wreck for a month and I'd have to replay that scene a gazillion times before I develop immunity towards it.
If it were up to me, how will I do it:
Orchid: It's my destiny to save the world, not yours.
Dongfang: I told you, didn't I? You're mine. Your life is just as important as mine. With me here, no one can hurt you.
If you do not know where these lines came from, they will sound lackluster.
HOWEVER...
In the earlier episodes AND that scene where Dongfang rescued Orchid from the Emperor, these were the lines he kept telling Orchid... only he said it out of his own desire to protect himself (Heart curse).
No matter how many times he repeated those lines before, they never bore weight. They were true. He never lied. They just didn't have weight cause these lines were all about him. Just him.
So imagine if he will say it for the last time. But this time, every single word bears the weight of his willingness to die for her because of how much he loves her.
So, like, you circle back to his words before. But now the meaning has changed. Now, the words he will say for the last time will stay with her.
You are mine / You are my person
Your life is just as important as mine (because of the heart curse; I will die if you die) / I value your life as much or even more than mine because I love you
With me here, no one can hurt you (I won't let anything happen to you because you are my weakness)/ I'm willing to bear all the cost for you (he actually said these lines to her when the Moon Tribe expressed their disapproval towards Orchid)
From him being selfish to him being selfless. It'll be him being true to his word til the very end.
The words that were empty and sounded like a threat even has turned into a lover's promise fulfilled.
Wouldn't that be more devastating? For me it would.
