3. “Suffragette” (2015)
I 2013 Norway celebrated 100 years of universal suffrage. My arts collective, Queendom, marked the event with a stage production highlighting the Norwegian suffrage movement (“Ja, vi elsker”). The subject has stayed with me since then, and my expectations were high when “Suffragette” came out in 2015. Sadly Sarah Gavron’s film fails to engage me. Sure, there are moving and troubling scenes here and there, but the subdued quality of the narrative had me wishing it would hit me harder.
But, some movies are just more important than others. And there is no doubt about the importance of this story and that people should see it - perhaps especially young men and women. The rights that are taken for granted today did not come cheap and we should know the names of those who fought for our freedoms. Let Sarah Gavron’s film inspire you to read up on your own country’s suffrage movement.
