Something something Simon and Grace having a deep, fundamental understanding of each other's situation but also each other's minds. Both being neurodivergent and thus knowing how to help each other etc. AND IT NOT BEING ROMANTIC, they hold each other because yes they love and care for each other AND ITS NOT ROMANTIC. You get it you get it (very surface level reading I simply don't have the time and space to go in depth.) but like yeah you get it. I eat your fics.

Yeah lol. I mean. The way I look at it, Rocky is Grace’s other half. He’s his soulmate 100% and always. Same goes with Rocky to Grace. They are each other’s forever yah know?? But just like Rocky has Adrian, love of his life, best mate in all of Erid. All of the GALAXY. Adrian gives differently to what Grace can give. That’s the same with Simon. He gives differently to Grace, but they are both equally important to Grace.

In Simon’s case, god I love him so much. He had no one. Literally no one. We know his mother is dead, we know his community had abused and abandoned him, we know COI hated him. He died abused, hated, and hurt beyond measure. Giving him a new life and a REAL chance to be something else, oooo love it so much.

Grace gives back to Simon in ways he had always sacrificed. Same with Rocky and Adrian. It’s why as funny as it is to have Rocky be so protective and have this rivalry with Simon, I cannot do it. I can’t imagine sweet Rocky who LOVESS humanity and loves GRACE so much to hate and antagonize someone hurting.

I like the give and take of bloodymary. I like giving Grace more and not dooming him new suffering with being so lonely. I ESPECIALLY love giving Simon a real chance at life. I like being able to put that into my writing. I like how it’s very encouraged by the fans to make platonic or otherwise queer relationships that aren’t necessarily romantic. Just community.

I like to imagine a sleep deprived and pissed off Ryland Grace uses his teacher phrases but in his "ragefull, yelling at collegues and getting kicked out of acadamia" voice.

"WE RAISE OUR HANDS TO SPEAK!" *even Stratt follows the rule the rest of the meeting*

"I can wait..." *said in a normal volume in a room of screaming frustrated scientists. they all quiet immediately*

"SEE ME AFTER CLASS!" *he then stormed off and now the poor sod that pissed of Dr. Grace is standing outside his office door like he's entering the execution chamber*

Ava encountering Simon's Still Life in the Backrooms, but it takes on the warped visage of what he looked like to her through the porthole glass, with blue-grey skin and a ghastly, fun-house mirror look. It cries and won't look at her and lashes out if she gets too close. This thing is a coward. Flighty and erratic.

Simon encountering his own Still Life, but it's the Shadowman who never speaks, yet chases his footsteps. Retraces them obsessively. Simon is always having to move to keep away from it, because it won't stop watching him.

Ava encountering her own Still Life and it's a highly efficient and vicious murderer, who has harsh shadowy markings on it from all the times she had to look at herself in the mirror after another convict death. This is a dangerous one.

Simon encountering Ava's Still Life born from his own mind and seeing nothing but a wide, round, blind eye from the shadows. It's voice sounds like the radio, and boy does it love to talk. It sounds like listening to poorly AI-generated speech of what Ava used to sound like, and none of the words make sense. It's super creepy.

I haven't seen the Backrooms movie, but this feels right. Send post.

And I don't just mean "oh, my little work mistake is actually nothing compared to a fiery crash that kills people," either. The reason commercial flight is so many orders of magnitude safer than any other form of transportation is because after every accident and incident, an independent regulatory body investigated it with the express goal of figuring out exactly what happened, why, and how to prevent the same thing from ever happening again—not to root out which person deserved the blame or the liability.

It's a simple, shockingly effective idea. It's also worlds away from how most people approach their own mistakes and the mistakes of others.

Because it’s never just one person’s fault. And even when it is, it still isn’t. 

The sharpest, best-trained pilots make worse decisions when they're tired or sick or stressed out, so there's two of them. The most dedicated and experienced air traffic controllers garble an instruction over the radio sometimes, so pilots are trained to always repeat clearances back to catch misunderstandings quickly. The best and brightest maintenance mechanic still overlooks a screw or misconnects a wire once or twice in her career, so aircraft systems are built with two or three or four layers of redundancy, and pilots are exhaustively trained to deal with failures safely. 

Everyone eventually has a bad day. Every component breaks down. Every computer gets a bad a Windows update and spirals into a reboot doom loop. If it’s possible for one person’s mistake to domino into a mushroom cloud of a fuckup, then that task is too critical to be one person's sole responsibility. The accident sequence starts with the design of the system—so how do you improve the system to keep it from happening again?

I cannot express enough just how badly I want some kind of epilogue to PHM where the Humans and Eridians are fully in contact with one another: sharing their cultures, teaching each other their sciences, travelling to each others systems for diplomatic & research purposes as well as offering each other whatever help they can while their populations regrow.

I wanna see the unbridled joy on the faces of human schoolchildren who get to meet the first Eridians who come to visit Earth. I wanna see the Eridian ambassadors insisting to the humans that they get a chance to meet their schoolchildren, because they themselves were schoolchildren when a human teacher came to their planet and inspired them to become astronauts.

I wanna see humans getting permission to set up a small embassy somewhere in the Eridani System, possibly even giving a very elderly Grace a chance to see humans again. I wanna see how surprised the humans are that he doesnt want to come home to Earth, but also see them quickly realize just how amazing it is to live, study and teach on an alien world.

I wanna see Humans & Eridians joining forces and creating a massive space program with the goal of inoculating every star in the Milky Way that has been infected with the astrophage. I want to hear them say "the fact that there are three Systems with life this close to each other implies that the whole Galaxy is likely teeming with life- probably even whole civilizations. And none of them deserve to go through what we went through. Screw any ideas about a 'prime directive.' We CAN help, and we WILL help. Lets spend the next 1000 generations saving the galaxy, together."

I wanna see more of this world, generations after these two planets were saved by a pair of alien scientists who became best friends, and who each risked everything to make absolutely certain that the other's world was just as safe as their own. I wanna see these two great peoples coming out of this horrible generational trauma, coming together to celebrate the life that they all get to live with their newly-found cosmic neighbors.

This world makes me feel so hopeful and excited to see what these people can do with each other aaaaa
