one of the best parts of making up increasingly wild and specific aus with a friend is sending them posts like "this is sooo blorbo in torture chamber au number 15" and they reply back like "YESSS btw have i told you about my latest idea for how to torture them even more" and you get to enjoy a little snack and kick your feet with glee
My favorite Simon mannerisms!
(He's a cutie)
Rubbing his mama's knife sheath
His little hand direction things (he's a visual person)
Teefs
Feeling The Blood
THIS FACE
These faces
Blinkblinkblink *head tilt* blinkblink
T-rex arms
Also I love loveee the little tapping/rubbing stims he does but I don't have a gif of those
And his head tilts
He is so dog
I'm feeling up for writing, send me some prompts/ideas for Simon/Iron Lung to writeđđЏ
Ok so the thing about radiation is that it's hot.
Like there was an incident with an orphan source where 3 men found this piece of iron that was warm and used it as a heater. Stayed around it all night for warmth and carried it on their back. All three got really bad radiation burns from it and were often in and out of the hospital. At least one of them died.
(And if an orphan source is glowing, you're fucked. You need to throw that thing as far away from you as you can and fucking run. Your hand may not survive but you might.)
Onto Iron Lung: you remember how Simon was complaining about how hot it was in the ship? Do you remember how long he was in there for? How many pictures he took? How many times he used the camera for light?
He was never coming out unscathed.
One thing I looove about Simon is how "unique"(?) he looks (if that makes sense)
I don't usually watch or enjoy live action movies because my facial recognition is fucked and I have a lot of trouble telling characters apart/identifying them by their face. I never had that issue with Simon because 1) he is one of 2 main characters we see in the entire movie and 2) he has a very unique appearance.
A lot of this comes from Mark himself, because Mark is, well, unique-looking. He has very identifiable facial features (ex. his big nose, his eyes ďź I don't know how to explain it, but his eyes have a particular look to them), which obviously carry over to Simon.
You don't often find American movies with a male main character who is half Korean and has long hair (and, although I'm talking about appearance here, Simon's behavior also drastically sets him apart from a lot of other live action protagonists I have seen. Buuut that's a topic for another time holy fuck). You also don't find a lot of live action movies who want to show a man shirtless who doesn't have a "perfect" body (if that makes sense)
It is also true that a lot of Simon's uniqueness comes from his costume design and makeup. Obviously what he is wearing is different than what we are used to seeing. Futuristic yet run-down. But you can put Simon in a t shirt and sweatpants and still recognize him as Simon. It's hard to even see him as Mark sometimes, even when Mark had his long hair.
Anyways, I hope this makes sense and isn't too rambly and I really hope that none of this comes across as offensive? I don't know if it would but I worry :(
You guys do know a butcher does more than kill, right?
(Saw someone concerned about this being canon so I thought I'd state that there's so little to the canon that you can play around with any of it! This is based on terminology, a bit of canon, and extrapolation. If you like these concepts and want to use them in your own lore building and fics, feel free to! I would love to read what you wrote!)
Simon is a killer, he's killed as a child soldier with Eden and he was killing members of the C.O.I. up until he was 17 (I think Simon was 33 when he was in the Lung because Mark was 33 at time of filming and there were 16 years of prison in the game). A soldier doesn't get a title because he kills, that would be like naming a dog "Dog" because of it's shape. He became a specialist. He was more than just a killer. He was feeding The Last Tree the bodies of those he killed which means he was not only killing but preparing the bodies.
Just imagine, this traumatized teenager, taking the bodies of adults that he's killed and pulling them, their dead weight, onto a table where he guts and cleans them, looks for parts that can be reused (resources are lacking, how many times has this fake tooth been reused? Are there organs that could be transplanted? Are there prosthetic limbs that can be reappropriated? Any tech? How about blood or skin?), cuts the pieces down, mulches muscles, grinds down bone, mixes it with soil and compost before bringing it to the tree. Some bodies are whole but those had to be special people, those closest to The Father and the higher order of caretakers. I like to believe that, if Simon's Mother was with him on Eden, he wrapped her body in the holy cloth and placed her in the tree's roots himself, only to not be able to say the prayer as he was meant to due to the grief stealing his voice.
But Butchers don't just kill in war, it's a completely different skill set. He slaughtered prey animals for their meat, meaning the sick and frail, the ones who caused too many problems and brought too little to Eden. Simon would be given the names, maybe the room numbers, of the people that The Father chose to be culled. People knew him and feared him, in Eden, because he would kill in their homes and sometimes it was just because they pissed The Father off.
Just thinking, it's a lot more than just blood that was on his hands.
Has the Tumblr Iron Lung community heard of whale falls?
This would be a pretty cool idea for monster Simon
x
Bones TW + thalassophobia TW below
Simon "the butcher", who is horrified when he finds out he sentenced a man to death by pressing the camera button.
Simon "the butcher" who keeps apologizing for not knowing better, for causing harm to the people in the room, for being rightfully angry and lashing out, turning every knob and lever and pressing that damn button because why would it work when he doesn't have any power and why didn't they just Tell Him??
Simon "the butcher" who gets teary and has the look of a hurt child on his face when ava mentions filament station and his voice trembles when he is quick to say "that wasn't supposed to happen"...
Simon "the butcher" who apologizes to the sm-13, an inanimate object, after hitting the console.
Just... Simon being so unbeliebably human throughout the whole movie, it makes my heart ache for him
Some Simons (featuring trans Simon and his unhealthy method of binding)
I was only looking for Iron Lung pins and keychains for my Iron Lung ita bag and saw this đ
my personal experience of Iron Lung is sooo special to me. i watched the movie in the cinema but i had poured a 15% ABV alcoholic energy drink directly into my slushy which sank directly to the bottom, failed to consider this, essentially skulled that whole drink before the credits were even finished and was so drunk i dont remember any of the movie other than that i continued to sip my second drink every time markilplier said "fuck" or "when there was blood on screen" and then tried to rewatch it in 144p on a projector on my BLUE living room wall where it looked like the evil version of Iron Lung where instead of blood it was shit. not had any thoughts about the movie ever since and i think thats very beautiful. someone tell Markiplier im sorry.
I can't get over how human Simon was. He apologised for his outbursts, even when punching the sub at one point, he repeatedly apologised for the radiation in the exact same way like he was still reeling from the shock of that information. Whenever the oxygen ticked down you can see a new wave of horror washing over him that he needs to take a second to cope with. When Ava gives him the login details he stumbles on remembering control-shift-9 never mind the password she rattled out.
They managed to present a man with a dark past and anger issues who is also not a monster. He is a human being desperate to survive and nobody even knows his name anymore. The closest thing he had to a family he resents but still obviously misses terribly as he clings to that pendant and shakes.
And Ava. Ava too. She's in an impossible situation. She doesn't want more humans to die. She has no idea how much damage radiation has done to her. This man, who she thought was a heartless killer, is begging and pleading and apologising like a child and it's getting increasingly harder to lie to him that he's going to be ok. Her screaming and begging that this is bigger than him is so achingly desperate I can still feel it, humanity is almost entirely gone. I fully believe that she hates this as well, all of it, but if she doesn't follow orders and take calculated risks then what else is there to keep her tethered and sane? What else can she cling to? They're almost entirely alone in an empty universe. She needs this hope.
Pertaining to your iron lung drawing requests post, perhaps ava looking in through the porthole? Like we're standing behind her and we see the back of her head while she's looking in :)
Tysm for the request! This was a fun one
I like how Mark & his team were able to work in the frog (itâs called âfrogâ in the game files) from the ending of the game into the movie, by having itâs blank white eye rush past Simon in the nightmare sequence.
I love how they were able to expand on and explain oddities in the game such as âwhy does the SM-13 -a cheap burner sub- have a valuable computer system in it?â To download the blackbox data from the SM-8!
âHow can the camera take pictures if light canât pass through blood?â It uses X-Rays instead!
âWouldnât that mean it slowly irradiates Simon every time itâs used?â Yes!
âWait, doesnât that also mean that it would only show the bones of a creature, and not the whole thing; meaning you canât tell if itâs alive or dead?â Also yes!
This movieâs attention to detail is insane. 10/10.
Could you imagine making your own movie, making like 20 million dollars, and then going âawesome, now to install a DVD duplicating machine in my house and personally burn copies by hand like a medieval monk preserving sacred textsâ
Like I need people to understand the mental image here of a multimillionaire internet creator personally overseeing DVD production in his own house like heâs running an underground bootleg operation out of a basement in 2007.
Itâs weirdly charming because thereâs something very âold internetâ about it, this energy of âI made a thing, and now I will physically hand it to people myself like an artisan at a craft fair.â
The man really said: âThe future of cinema is me standing next to a humming disc burner at 2amâ
And like... I can't help but believe he's onto something
