The Delayed Sentience of a Being: With Love
You were my first love. I still think of you, your smile still graces my mind's eye with your young elegance and kind demeanor. I still hear your laugh, the most fantastic symphony that beautifully bestows happiness in bleeding hearts. I remember believing that the only reason I was put on this Earth was to be ridiculous enough to make that same smile stretch across your face and make that adorable laugh strike a calm into all that heard it.
You were my first love and I will never forget you. Although, butterflies never dance and enthusiastically fly around in my stomach when the thought of you distracts me. Maybe because I have the ability to contact you and tell you these things but I wont. Maybe because I tell myself that you have moved on. Or maybe because I know that people change and that you wont like who I've become or worse, it'll be a mutual dislike.
You were my first love because you knew me and you didn't hate me. You taught me that I should love myself in order to love you. I only wish I had realized that when you had begun that lesson. I'm sorry, love, that it took this long to internalize your teachings. Thank you for helping me, I will always be grateful. Because of you, I can love anyone.
You were my first love. You were the only person who would gently take my hand to play with my favorite ring that my Nana bought. You were the only being who would pull me into the tightest hug before we had to part ways. You were the only individual who cried after seeing me in my favorite dress. You were the only person who didn't yell at me. You were the only one who was gentle and kind and sweet and loved every bit of me, even the weak and pathetic and horrible bits. You cherished me.
You were my first love and one day I hope you see this and smile one more time knowing that you not only saved a life, but you changed it.
Thank you.
He stands before you in his concealing leather jacket and carelessly ripped jeans. His demeanor makes you both uneasy and incredibly comfortable at the same time. This moment creates a conflicting conversation with the different parts of your personality which you hush when orange smoke puffs out from his strained, frowning lips. He tugs the sleeves of his jacket up and it’s job has failed. You can see his thin, mutilated wrists and you curse the tears that threaten to convey your truest emotions. If one took a fleeting glance at this boy they might think he’s a normal, angsty teenager, but you know the bittersweet truth. You know his truth.
When he glances in your direction, it’s almost as though he surrenders unto you the entirety of his attention. His captive gaze looks into yours and refuses to waver even if something more interesting is occurring outside the reaches of his peripheral. At first, his eyes startle you because you are unsure if he is judging you for something you said but the more you interact with him, the more you realize that behind those dark eyes is a sweet and unassuming mind. The gentle stare you receive is reassuring and polite. You are human, those eyes seem to say, I understand that and will give you my unconditional respect. He provides and seamlessly soothing atmosphere within that look that denies you the fear of unacceptance. With his eyes, he posses the power to calm you in your worst state of mind for which you can’t help but be eternally grateful for.
