Rather than fighting for every woman’s right to feel beautiful, I would like to see the return of a kind of feminism that tells women and girls everywhere that maybe it’s all right not to be pretty and perfectly well behaved. That maybe women who are plain, or large, or old, or differently abled, or who simply don’t give a damn what they look like because they’re too busy saving the world or rearranging their sock drawer, have as much right to take up space as anyone else. I think if we want to take care of the next generation of girls we should reassure them that power, strength and character are more important than beauty and always will be, and that even if they aren’t thin and pretty, they are still worthy of respect. That feeling is the birthright of men everywhere. It’s about time we claimed it for ourselves.

Because daddy’s labour is arbitrarily placed at a higher value and the work he does all week is no more important or legitimate than domestic labour. The capital value of the same relative labour is dependent on the gender of the person its performed by, and the capital values of different, specific kinds of labour, are dependent on the gender of the person who usually performs them in a society. The work easily available to women is priced cheap or free, and the work women have to struggle harder to get is still worth less capital than that same work when performed by men. 

In short, daddy gets to choose what he gets to work on, and the job he gets to choose can easily generate more than enough money to feed and shelter more than one person.  In this scenario, women still have to do work, but are often forced to depend on others to support them, let alone able to consider supporting others with their labour. 

In some cases, men might actually prefer their wives to do even less in terms of domestic labour, because it will be a symbol of conspicuous leisure, which is the mark of status. Women doing no work at all only happens if daddy has so much money and power that he wants to show it to people by how he can support a family with even less work on their part.

A society directing women to be dependent on men, who like their women that way, is definitively a patriarchy, and the division of labour between men and women continues to reinforce gender inequality even today.

The amount of technology at our fingertips is incredible. To think that I can write, record and release music I’ve recorded in my bedroom and rehearsal space without having to jump through too many hoops is a gift, in a way. Of course I have paid to get it mixed and mastered. I find mixing my own stuff to be like getting ready for the day without looking in the mirror - I’d probably be ok, but I’d really prefer some perspective.  This song was written about one abusive music bro dude in particular. The fact that a few of my friends thought it was written about another abusive music bro says it all. These charismatic fucked up yet powerful men exist in every scene in every city and town around the world, and unfortunately will keep on weaseling their way into good things unless they see there are consequences for their behaviour. I won’t hold my breath.  It’s up on Bandcamp now, and will hit Spotify and iTunes etc in the coming days. Have at it.
