hey gang i have an important mission for you
if you have a good grasp on the sinners' characters and personalities and all that, and can imagine them all playing a social deduction game like mafia or werewolf together, answer this quiz in-character (you can also just answer it how you would normally nbd) :3 the quiz is gnosia themed, yes, but it also works for social deduction games in general so don't worry <3
backstory behind this under the cut
I've never played Gnosia, but I have played Town of Salem and have watched games of Blood on the Clocktower before so I generally understand how they work. Here's my responses as/for Faust for you under the cut!! Some are my general thoughts and some are what I think she'd say in response. I've included my picks on the quiz too; for ease of matching to the provided scale -- (never) 1 2 3 4 5 6 (always)
"I can turn players against each other." - 2 - Hmm... Faust generally doesn't strike me as the kind of person who intentionally causes infighting -- it's usually others vs. her since she can be antagonistic. She's clever enough she probably *could*, but it's not her natural inclination compared to someone like Outis.
"I ask other players to come forward and share information with the group." - 6 - "Information is the most important thing in a social deduction situation, and it must be gathered by any means necessary. Occasionally, one must make the sacrifice of giving up information to gain more... Faust is well-versed in this dynamic with the Gesellschaft. If Faust is not asking them to come forward publicly, Faust will whisper to them in private."
"When presented with conflicting information, I follow the most reliable source." - 5 - "I am a Faust who believes in uncertainty. The most reliable source is obviously the most logical, but... occasionally it's worth considering other, unexpected paths."
"I am quick to identify situations where players are confirmed good or evil." - 5 - She's not as quick of a thinker or intuitive as Outis or Ryoushuu (both would be a 6 here imo), and we saw her genuinely underestimate Sasha in MOTWE, but I think she'd be good at parsing that kind of information. Process of elimination (like you might do in Clue/Cluedo or other strategy games) is definitely up her alley.
"I can defend myself without relying on facts and logic." - 1 - Absolutely not. She's very consistently a liar by omission (rather than inventing falsehoods or making wild claims), and clams up in Canto 9 rather than resorting to an impassioned defense against the Gesellschaft. She'd be awful at this. Weak excuses along the line of her "Faust was simply curious" at the end of Canto 9 will only go so far.
"Players who don't actively suspect me are swayed by my comments." - 5 - If you know her weak spots you'd be more suspicious of her, but she's very frequently someone who positions herself as a leader, as reliable/trustworthy, and (importantly) as Correct. It's natural to fall behind what she's saying, I feel.
"I have the most control over the discussion." - 5 or 6 - Though she's not always willing to share much, it's rare that she actively loses control of information or the situation, even to Sinners like Outis or Ishmael who also have heavy command of discussions. MOTWE is really the only time we've ever seen, because she gets nervous and can no longer rely on the Gesellschaft.
"I can lead a discussion with confidence." - 5 or 6 - Absolutely. She's prideful and matter-of-fact and the others often turn to her. Again, only a couple instances here where she's gotten tripped up, but they're few and far between. I think the only ones who could beat her here would be Meursault (has the confidence but is way too much of a follower) or Don Quixote (unabashedly selfconfident and will willfully turn an ear if confronted.) Given Faust's pridefulness she *would* answer "always", but she maybe leans to almost-always.
"I can make people believe anything I tell them." - 4 - Most of what information she shares in-game appears well-substantiated, or is something others can't contest because they simply lack the information to do so. She also could probably come up with tons of plausible defenses, though mostly logically-based as emotions are her weak point.
"When falsely claiming a role, I act convincingly like someone who was assigned that role." - 4 - She would absolutely know the ins and outs of every role well, I'm sure she's well-studied. The problem would be, again, she struggles to do anything but lie by omission. As we're not sure what she's like when she outright lies (rather than just twisting her words and real actions to sound plausible), I'm placing her at a 4. I think she'd be the kind of person who'd be naturally more comfortable claiming a role similar to her own... which can fall apart, because it's an expected defense. She'd know this and do her best, but yeah.
"When I'm evil, I plan ahead and leave suspicious good players alive to frame." - 6 - "It is simply the most thoughtful and logical plan of action." Especially as she may struggle to defend herself towards the end game, it's crucial to leave others alive strategically to take the heat.
"I make an effort to help new players feel included." - 1 - No... probably not... she's very uppity and dismissive of those who don't immediately understand her, as we know. You sink or you swim with her.
"When there is little information to work with, my comments have the most influence." - 6 - Again, she's naturally viewed as an information source by the other Sinners, assuming they're actually playing like they did with J&J (rather than being transposed into the world.) She's great at doing what she can with a little bit of information.
"When I am doubted, people's suspicion quickly fades or switches to someone else." - 3 - The others ganged up on her heavily in MOTWE, and it was only Dante's reassurances that (reluctantly!) got the heat off of her. But they did also gave her a more charitable view at times when she was vying for information. Once there's a clear flaw in her defense, though... it's going to be much harder to defend herself.
"I can easily blend in with the crowd." - 2 - "Faust... stands out on occasion, even among Fausts. And Faust is a genius. Faust can be quiet if needed, but Faust does not see herself as the type to 'blend in'."
"I notice which players are consistently defensive of each other." - 6 - "It is not hard to analyze the active conversations." I think Outis would be a 6 here as well.
"It's most important to me that everyone has a good time." - 2 - I'm sure it's nice, but... let's be real, Faust is likely playing to win.
"People believe me even when I propose a theory that is unlikely or contradictory." - 6 - If they're not paying enough attention? Absolutely. Fits in with her appearing as a trustworthy information source. And the Sinners are used to not totally understanding her but going along with her anyways. They'll at least give her words the time of day.
"If other players suspect me, I can regain their trust." - 2 or 3 - "Faust would like to believe there is nothing to be suspicious of Faust for. But... I may need a little bit of help. Though I certainly would rather not admit such... it would be worthwhile to make alliances with those who are better at certain kinds of defenses."
"I search for ways to disconfirm my theories." - 6 - "All hypotheses must be thoroughly and adequately tested."
"When I lie, my voice sounds different." - 2 - Her tone of voice almost never changes, unless she's under heavy fire (in which case she gets more short with others.) It's her speaking style that does -- her statements are a lot more vague (liar by omission).
"My accusations are theatrical or dramatic." - 1 - "Faust sees no need for useless theatricalities." (See: most recent Walpurgisnacht.)
"I can make players do what I want them to by "double bluffing"." - 3 or 4 - I had to look this one up! Assuming the definition 'tell the truth but appear that you're bluffing/lying': I think she'd actually be okay at this, but only later in the game, since by default she likes to appear trustworthy. Information control is something she's fairly good at, even if lying isn't.
"When there is little information to work with, I'm often the target of suspicion." - 2 - Depends on where in the game it is, and if others suspect she's hiding information willingly. I think she'd prefer to appear just open enough to be able to discuss, but never give up all of her information. Generally though: trustworthy source of information, if she truly doesn't have any there probably just isn't much to go around.
"Other players tend to challenge my comments." - 3 - The later in the game it is I think the more she gets challenged, especially if she's being vague.
"I falter when I'm under suspicion." - 5 - See above answers! She's not particularly great at defending herself, she tends to clam up rather than do so.
"I notice if a player is speaking more or less than usual." - 5 - She's maybe not as perceptive to that pattern as Meursault, but I do think she'd notice. She's good at patterns and deduction.
"Even if there is information against me, I won't be voted out." - 2 - Here's the thing... she gets vague when she lies, she tends to have heavy control of the discussion, and she also prefers to have a lot of information. It would be worth keeping her alive if you were also evil, but for the good players -- she's dangerous. That's the kind of person you don't want left alive for more than a round or two, lest she find some way to falsely prove her innocence, or mucks up discussions with nothingburger statements.
"Other players tend to notice when I'm speaking less/more than usual." - 4 for both - Yes. This is one of her key tells imo, alongside general faltering. Various characters have noticed in MOTWE and beyond when her speech patterns changed enough, and they'd notice here. I do think that she would try to hold information close to her chest, and that would be her saving grace here -- they may wonder if she's doing that rather than actively lying/being suspicious. Nonetheless, it would probably still be noticed.
"I make accusations early in the game." - 1 - "Faust would prefer to have more information first to make the correct judgements." Someone like Outis or Ishmael or Heathcliff would definitely be quicker to make early accusations (though Outis would probably know consciously that this may get a target put on her back. I'm not certain Faust would have that kind of foresight.)
"Other players tend to follow my lead." - 5 - Again, not as much as some of the other leaderly characters, but they often turn to her for direction.
"My name is not brought up until late in the game." - 4 - Assuming this means 'bring up as a suspect' rather than just general mentions: I rarely see her getting voted out early-game -- she's too valuable to keep around if she and you are both good players -- but mid-game and onwards is a possibility. She's probably dead by mid-game though, given she's dangerous to keep around too long.
"I am underestimated and it works to my advantage." - 2 - Unless she takes the risk to make some wild plays (she is a Faust who believes in uncertainty and very rarely does things counter to the expected), she's quite predictable.
"I team up with players so they will trust me more." - 3 or 4 - She would be reluctant to do so. Very reluctant. But if she's going to survive this game and cover for her weak spots, she's GOING to have to... I think this one wholly depends on where in time you're writing the Sinners as playing this game. (I'm intrigued to see how/why all of the Sinners were hired in Canto 12 -- was it her doing, or someone above her? That's information we don't have yet that would influence this.)
"When presented with conflicting information, I follow my gut instinct." - 4 - See MOTWE. She would mull it over for far longer than Heathcliff or Hong Lu, but she would ultimately go with her instinct if gathering more information first doesn't help.
"When I want a player voted out, they get voted out." - 3 - Despite having control of discussions, I think when and who to vote depends on her reasons. If she's got a foolproof one: yes. If not: nope. For this I'm referencing her bickering with Hohenheim, and how the others don't often follow along with her on it.
"I can recognize signs of deception in someone's voice; facial expression or body language; etc." - 2; 2; - She trusted Sasha, even if only for a moment. She was known as 'Naive Faust' for a time to the Gesellschaft. She had no comment that I recall on the deceptive kezhan guy from Nocturnal Sweeping. I think this speaks for itself. She would notice patterns like incongruent speaking styles, unusual movement, or contradictory information, but not tells like tone of voice or posture.
"I'm better at playing in groups where I already know everyone's "tells"." - 6 - See MOTWE. She *can* go blind, but it's tiring for her and she's not nearly as good at it.
"My comments are most convincing when a lot of information is available." - 2 - Nope, given she relies on information control and omission. Unless she's adding onto that information with proper valid info, of course.
"If someone tries to team up with me, I think about what their intentions are." - 2 - "While Faust is in this solely for Faust's own gain, the Gesellschaft believes Faust is naive. ...They are slightly correct. Nonetheless, if another wishes to team up with Faust, Faust will be as careful as always." Or in other words: she'd be okay with it and probably would give them the benefit of the doubt/trust their reasoning, rather than interrogating it like Outis, Ryoushuu, or Hong Lu. But, she'd probably still be somewhat stingy with information.
"I have many allies that will defend me." - 2 - No, not particularly. Bad at teamwork and when she's suspicious, she's suspicious. Dante or Sinclair or Yi Sang might anyways, but some of the others would not.
"Other players trust me enough to privately share their information." - 6 - Yes and I think this would be her preference, is to share and gain information privately if/when she can.
"I can tell when someone is trying to lead me astray, even if their statements make sense." - 1 - Nope, Gesellschaft moment.
"I usually survive close to the end of the game." - 2 - Mid-game most often. Only way she gets much later is if she has some sort of self-defense ability, or is evil and has a good teammate.
"Even when I'm lying, my statements are within the realm of possibility." - 5 - Yep, she's probably omitting information (thus being vague) or making statements close to reality.
"If I don't share my role or information, people find it suspicious." - 6 - ABSOLUTELY. She better have a Day 1 or 2 claim locked and loaded.
"My comments are passed over." - 2 - The Sinners tend to listen to her heavily, unless they can't understand her statements. (Obfuscating information like this to get it discarded would be one of the main ways she could lie.)
"I can tell what a player's true intentions are." - 2 - Naive Faust is naive. I think she's starting to get there, but she needs to strengthen her deduction muscles more first.
"When I am a powerful good role, I escape the evil team's notice." - 1 - No way lmao. If she's not lying about her role to hide it (ex. Town Protective instead of Town Power kind of claims, for a ToS example) she's absolutely getting blasted.
"When I lie, it becomes apparent in my body language or facial expression." - 1 - Nope, still as a statue and stone-faced to match.
"At the start of the game, I only share my role and information with players I trust completely." - 3 - I think she would understand she needs to share some information on Day 1/2 publicly to gain trust. She'd just prefer not to, or to be vague about it.
"I rely on mechanical information or probability to determine who I suspect." - 6 - She totally would factor this into her theories, calculations, and claims.
"I'm aware of every possibility, even the ones I don't believe are true." - 6 - Faust knows all outcomes; Faust is a Faust who believes in uncertainty.
"I mess up in my bluffs or contradict myself." - 2 - Not likely. I think she would keep meticulous notes, if allowed to do so.
"I can rely on my instincts to determine who is suspicious." - 1 - Absolutely not, see above.
"When players suspect me, I pull out all the stops to convince them otherwise." - 4 - She would do her best, but I do think 'all the stops' would always be missing emotional defenses or the "but see, you're just lying! why should we trust you, huh!?" from her -- which is a large part of defending yourself when the information doesn't add up.
"I can distinguish "double bluffs" from other lies." - 4 - I think since she knows all outcomes, she'd be able to consider the possibility that it is a double bluff. It may be down to probability, though.
"I team up and share information with players I trust." - 3 - She'd team up reluctantly, generally. You'd probably have to approach her to team and not vice-versa.
That should be all of the questions! They're in the order I saw them for now, if the quiz is randomized sorry about that -- I may come back to reorder them later. Hope this helps!! Can't wait to see the fic for this, social deduction games are really fun :D (even if I am notoriously bad at them myself LMAO)
P.S. if you need the result stats from the quiz, here they are! Charisma: 36 Intuition: 23 Logic: 38 Charm: 17 Performance: 28 Stealth: 13
I am in such awe at the dedication and detail of all these responses, tysm!!!!!!!!!!!!

so on discord, i am very normal about the odyssey and i keep thinking about how itll get adapted in outis's canto, and one thought me and some folk had the other day is that previous cantos could be compared to different hurdles experienced in the odyssey... one or two of them might be a bit of a stretch but what can ya do
gregor - the war (self explanatory)
rodya - fighting back against someone to protect those suffering by them, only for that action to cause considerably bigger problems later on (poylphemus and poseidon)
sinclair - helplessly watching your family's final moments while learning about horrors to come that are/will be your own fault (tiresias)
yi sang - giving up your personal morals, your cohorts, and everything you strived for with them so that you alone will survive, even if it'll irreparably change you for the worse (zeus)
ishmael - encountering giant spooky dangerous sea monster (scylla and charybdis)
heathcliff - transforming into a wild beast for the sake of a woman you love (circe)
don quixote - forgetting about home and happily staying within a dreamlike state (lotus eaters)
hong lu - losing your innocence at the hands of a selfish immortal figure who keeps you imprisoned as an object of their desire (calypso)
ryoshu - having to choose between rebelling against your authorities by letting a loved one die, or accepting their commands by becoming a killing machine, leaving behind that loved one anyway, and ultimately going with the second option (agamemnon)
the only remaining hurdles off the top of my head are aeolus, the laestrygonians, and the sirens, so cant wait to see which one canto 10 goes with :3
wait hey i just had a thought
gregor was absent from the bug walp because he has a relevant story connection to bugs that he is currently having a really bad time about
so
what if hong lu is absent from the bird walp for similar reasons
Don and Yi Sang tell a joke.
