Dear Reef,
How has life been treating you? I hope you and your family have been well!
In this letter, I wrote about some random things I remember and appreciate about you! It might come as a surprise, since I’d like to think we’re pretty good friends and formalities might seem strange now. Regardless, I wanted to show my gratitude and let you know how much you mean to me. Personally, recalling everything and writing them out is kind of therapeutic in a way. It helps me find some sort of closure to our college days, seeing as how abrupt and strange it ended because of COVID-19. I did hope I could write this letter by hand and give it to you in person, but seeing how things are going, I’m not sure if we’ll have a graduation party any time soon. Nevertheless, I know we’ll have plenty of chances to meet in the future and I look forward to grow alongside you until we’re old and gray.
My very first memory of you:
The first memory I remember of you is during an Arabic class in our preparatory year. You would participate and answer all sorts of questions which made me feel so amazed. I wanted to be like you! Other than that, there was also a time during English class where our teacher made us have quick conversations with everyone for a minute or so to get to know each other. We got to partner up and I remember thinking you were pretty interesting and that I’d like to talk to you more, but I wasn’t that social at the time.
My most favorite thing about you:
I love how you never give up and push yourself out of your comfort zone to achieve your goals. You care about your friends and support them in any way you can. I can’t even count the number of times you’ve helped me. You're relentless, strong, and passionate about your work. You’re seriously such an amazing person!
Something that reminds me of you:
I associate you with Mickey Mouse, Pusheen, and cats in general because of your big love for them. It’ll honestly be hard not to. Also, the fact that we’re born two days apart will make me think of you every time my birthday comes around. Still can’t believe I’m the eldest between us two!
Something about you that makes me proud:
I’m proud of the way you’ve grown since I’ve first known you, the way you don’t let things you’re unfamiliar with stop you, and the way you perfectly balanced your academic and social life. You aced everything with your hard work, and it makes me proud to see you evolve into such a badass! I genuinely mean it when I say that I’m proud to have met and known you in my life.
A few ways that we're radically different:
The most obvious one would be our interests. I don’t think that ever mattered though because you were open to exploring what I liked with me, which I’ve always appreciated. Another difference might be of how seriously we take things. There were times when you’d tell me about the things that bothered or embarrassed you and it would confuse me as the same things would have never made me feel that way. The opposite most likely holds true too. We’re most likely just sensitive about different things, so it’s interesting to see. Also, I’m not picky with food as your are haha.
A song that I'd think you like:
I don’t really know your music tastes to decide on a recommendation, but I love the songs from Mulan and Shrek even more now because of the memories I associate it with you.
Where I see you being in 20 years:
I can see you as a successful leader (or CEO) in your path, surrounded with friends and family who love you and care about you. You’ll help countless people along your journey, and possibly have lots work under you. You’ll become even more confident than you already are, sure of what you want and where to go. I hope you’ll have lots of cat-related items all over your house too!
Send them words of bravery in an area of their life that they might be fearful:
Don’t let anyone, no matter how close, shackle you or chain your passions. If friends and family become obstacles in your way, don’t be afraid to break through and show them who you truly are. I believe that you’re capable of SO much, and I hope slowly and gradually you can achieve them all. I’m cheering for you!
Oh man, where do I start? Thank you for the little surprise gifts you’ve given me now and then. The mickey mouse mug is literally the only mug I’ve been using ever since then. I also used the notebook you gave me as a diary, and I still write in it to this day. Thank you for taking care of me and helping me out with homework and exams. Thank you for never giving up on me and trying to befriend me despite how non-responsive I was haha. Thank you for the random calls you give me, either to congratulate me or to tell me something that happened to you. They always make me happy! Thank you for being in my life.
One deep dark secret that you don't know about:
I’ve avoided your calls/invitations to hang out in college a lot on purpose because I didn’t really feel comfortable around your or your friends at the time. I didn’t think I’d be able to contribute much to the topic either, so I thought it’d be best if I avoided the whole situation all together. Sorry~
Thanks for inviting me always regardless! I wouldn’t have warmed up to you otherwise.
Thank you for everything during these past years! My college life wouldn’t be the same without you. May your future be filled with happiness, success, and good health.
With lots of love,
Areej Aldosary
