due to everyone promptly telling me to drop the dex essay, i have been peer-pressured into revealing my true nature (neurodivergent). so have a LONG list of SOME of my dex headcanons:
intentionally styles himself to look similar to his dad as a sign of pride in his family, but isn’t a complete kesler clone.
for example, i headcanon that he has his mother’s eye-shape and hair texture. in the summer, his hair will get more auburny too.
on the hair front, before he knew biana, his hair was just a complete mess. it’s kinda curly, but he just treated it like straight hair so it made it incredibly frizzy for a while there.
when he was little, dex was scared of grady.
this was because the few times they’d met- his uncle had seemed upset with him from some reason.
later he would realize it was just because he reminded them of their daughter, but at the time he thought grady just hated him.
he’s still scared of grady, but only because grady could kill him if he wanted too.
listens to alternative music [instead of bird songs, he listens to thunderstorms cause he’s metal and cool]
planned how he would make a good first appearance if he was ever sent to exillium ahead of time.
the reason he liked sophie is because he didn’t have the vocabulary to express his need to be seen and appreciated by her. he also projected his actual feelings towards keefe on the nearest blonde girl available.
researched who wonder woman was and absolutely adored it. he ended up going on a 3 hour rant to sophie about her lore.
he helps tam and linh maintain their hair without actually dipping it in metal.
he has absolutely made fun of tam for doing that btw.
his sleep schedule is just as bad as sophie’s if not worse, because unlike sophie, he chooses to pull all-nighters (semi-canon?!)
when he hasn’t slept enough, he’ll sometimes slip into the techno-babble language which without fail always freaks out lovsie.
HATES the texture of glitter, but will never admit it because biana loves it so much.
stuffed animals also lowkey make him uncomfortable because he can sense what they’re made of which is why he doesn’t have a comfort buddy. they trigger his abilities when he’s trying to sleep.
he’ll be lying in bed when suddenly “80% cotton” washes over him instinctively.
his sheets are made from a specific type of cotton that gnomes grow to help with sleep which combats this side of his power.
sleeps with his shoes on in case the panic switch goes off.
originally designed the panic switch to only be one way and when sophie found out, she yelled at him for 30 minutes.
besides sophie, dex is the child forkle likes the most, primarily due to the amount of time they inevitably spend together working on surveillance.
dex is scared of bronte (canon) but bronte is also the only councilor dex tolerates as a person.
as the series goes on, the dynamic between stina and him becomes less serious hatred and more of a way for both of them to maintain a sense of normalcy and let out steam.
made marella a lot of fire-proof stuff as a way to apologize for not always being there for her.
has secretly been bugging all the councilors offices since legacy.
whenever they try to stop him from doing something illegal (ie: going to human cities without permission or editing the registry) he’ll casually bring up something he overheard.
no one can find the bugs so they think he’s just remarkably perceptive.
he’ll casually joke about his trauma around his friends. marella is the only one who ever laughs.
for example, someone will jokingly threaten him and he’ll be like, “just don’t use a melder. shockingly it’s not an efficient killing weapon.”
the jokes get progressively more unhinged depending on how sleep deprived he is.
somehow has access to coffee and uses elixirs to make it taste good to him.
is bad at sarcasm in the sense that he’ll use sarcasm all the time, but sounds 100% genuine.
thinks legos are the peak of human civilization.
back in his mild crush on sophie era, he re-watched all his mom’s movies to try and learn english to impress her. it did not work. he sounded like if dracula bit harry potter and also gave him a cold.
as desperate as he is for attention, he’s also very introverted. this turns into a vicious cycle of him being sad he’s excluded and completely exhausted when he is since he never learned how to manage his social battery well.
has little cuts all of his hands from working on stuff.
has older cousins on his dad’s side of the family who he’s never interacted with due to the tension between their parents.
he feels guilty for not feeling guilty enough about the ability restrictor. he thinks his sanity is proof that somehow he never cared enough about sophie. this only makes him feel worse.
puts the elf equivalent of salsa on everything much to the horror of everyone else.
wears either fuzzy socks or compression socks depending on the day.
needs glasses rip, but think his vision will improve once he rests his eyes for long enough.
if he had time for aesthetics, he’d be alternative or goth, but rn he looks vaguely like this raccoon:
