as the guardian, it extends your life quite a bit (master fu was 186 Ā½ years old). this means itās more than likely that marinette will outlive adrien if she doesnāt give up being the guardian when theyāre older. when adrien passes, all she will have left are the kwamis who keep her company for decades, until the day a new ladybug and chat noir are needed.Ā
she canāt help but ache a bit when she says goodbye to tikki and sneaks the earrings into the girlās purse. her heart cracks when she parts with the silver ring sheās so fond of seeing on another hand, one she hasnāt seen in over fifty years, and slips it into the boyās backpack. she watches them fumble through the first few months, trying to juggle this new responsibility of protecting paris and stumble through the confusing new feelings that come with the powers of creation and destruction.Ā
the ladybug reminds her so much of her younger self, and there are days where she sits in the park to reminisce, staring up at the statue of parisās old beloved heroes that has become worn over the years.Ā
black cats are meant to be unlucky, but thereās a spot on chat noirās bronze hand that faded more than the rest, a spot rubbed for luck each passing day, because itās the closest sheās able to be to him these days, other than his gravestone.
the day finally comes when the new ladybug has completed her training and sheās ready to take over the mantle of being the new guardian. sheās had days to prepare for this, for the memory loss she knows is going to come. thereās journals filled with an archive of her life, but she knows the feelings that come with them will be lost the next time she reads them. marinetteās eyes are watery as she utters the words.Ā
thereās a flash and a moment later, sheās on the floor, blinking dazedly, unsure.
she has no idea where she is, but thereās a girl in a spotted suit in front of her. sheās kind and explains that sheās a friend, though marinette has no clue who she is as she helps walk her home. on the walk back, they pass by a bronze statue and marinette pauses before it. she tilts her head, studying the two superheroes.
marinette asks the girl if thatās her. the new ladybug, the new guardian, hesitates but shakes her head. itās not her, itās a statue of the previous ladybug and chat noir.
āthe counterpart to the ladybug mi- uh, my partner. well, that was her partner. of course heās not my partner, as heās not around anymore but myā¦ā
marinette hums quietly as the girl rambles on (she seems a bit nervous, but maybe she was imagining it), and her hand absentmindedly reaches out to caress a worn bit of bronze.
āwell whoever they were, they seemed to make a miraculous pair.ā
