hey guys!
There are years that ask questions and years that answer.
Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God (via quoted-books)
Something thatās barely touched upon in the appblr community is mental health. Thereās this vibe, like someone canāt struggle with depression or bipolar disorder and also get into Harvard.Ā
And itās important to talk about those stories because the stigma of mental illness paints those who do suffer as useless, as lazy, as stupid. Of course thatās just not true. Appblr is for everyone.
men: *decided women werenāt allowed attend schools, study sciences, or have access to higher education* men: well if women are so smart then how come there arenāt many contributions from women in history huh
This post means well, but still erases womenās contributions in the same way men have. The truth is that women have made so many contributions to history and science despite men denying them access, but that men have either taken credit for those accomplishments or, when they couldnāt, completely divorced that accomplishment from the woman so that no one remembers them.
In fact, this happens so often that thereās even a name for it. Itās called the Matilda Effect which is defined as āthe systematic repression and denial of the contribution of woman scientists in research, whose work is often attributed to their male colleaguesā but which applies to other fields as well and goes doubly for women of color. How about just a few (certainly nowhere near all) women who contributed to science? And this is just science, not even history in the larger sense.
Margaret Hamilton - Lead programmer on the Apollo project, wrote the code to take us to the moon
Hedy Lamarr - actress and inventor of wifi
June Mathas, Frances Marion, Anita Loos, Lorna Moon - all silent film directors, in fact about 50% of films from 1911-1925 were directed by women
Annie Jump Cannon - developed first stellar classification system and classified nearly 400,000 stars, more than any other person ever
Lise Meitner - research paved the way for the discovery of nuclear fission, colleagues refused to credit her help, she received no credit while they were given a Nobel prize
Grace Hopper - computer scientist who created the first compiler
Rita Levi-Montalcini - Italian neuroscientist who won a Nobel Prize for her discovery of nerve growth factor
Melba Roy Moutan - mathematician who led a team of mathematicians at NASA, nicknamed āComputersā for their number processing prowess
Kay McNulty, Betty Jennings, Betty Snyder, Marlyn Wescoff, Fran Bilas and Ruth Lichterman - the primary programers of ENIAC, the first general purpose computer
Joyce Jacobson Kaufman - chemist who developed the concept of conformational topology
Vera Rubin - co-authored 114 peer reviewed papers. She specializes in the study of dark matter and galaxy rotation rates.Ā
Mary Sherman Morgan - rocket scientist who invented hydyne, a liquid fuel that powered the USAās Jupiter C-rocket.Ā
Chien-Siung Wu - physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project, as well as experimental radioactive studies. She was the first woman to become president of the American Physical Society.
Mildred Catherine Rebstock - first person to synthesize the antibiotic chloromycetin.
Ruby Hirose - chemist who conducted vital research about an infant paralysis vaccine.
Hattie Elizabeth Alexander - pediatrician and microbiologist who developed a remedy for Haemophilus influenzae, and conducted vital research on antibiotic resistance.
Marie Tharp - mapped the floor of the Atlantic Ocean and provided proof of continental drift.
Mae Jamison - astronaut who holds a degree in chemical engineering from Stanford University and was the first black woman in space.
Ada Lovelace - mathematician and considered to be the worldās first computer programmer.Ā
Patricia E Bath - ophthalmologist and the inventor of the Laserphaco Probe, which is used to treat cataracts.Ā
Barbara McClintock - won a Nobel prize for her discovery that genes could move in and between chromosomes.
Cecilia Payne - discovered what the universe is made of, she also discovered what the sun is made of (Henry Norris Russell is usually given credit for discovering that the sunās composition is different from the Earthās, but he came to his conclusions four years later than Payneāafter telling her not to publish).
Yanping Guo - mission design leader and one of the women who made up 25% of the New Horizons team. She configured the entire mission trajectory, including Jupiter and Pluto flybys.
Agnodice - went to study medicine in Alexandria to help keep women from dying in childbirth, pretended to be a man when she came back because it was illegal for a woman to be a doctor in Athens, was so much better than her male colleagues they brought her to court and accused her of seducing her patients as an explanation for her popularity but since she was the reason so many of the court had living wives and kids they were shamed into changing the law instead of executing her.
Queen Seondeok of Silla - set up first astronomy tower in Asia
Jocelyn Bell Bernell - discovered first pulsar, Anthony Hewish took credit listiner her as an assistant despite having nothing to do with the discovery, he received a Nobel Prize
Nettie Stevens - discovered that chromosomes determined sex, sent her findings to a colleague for peer review, he published it as his own and named her his technician
Marie Curie - won 2 Nobel prizes and was constantly attacked by her male colleagues and barred from academic organizations because she was a woman, still managed to be better than them
Marie Van Brittan Brown - black woman who co-invented home security surveillance
Vera Rubin - discovered dark matter at Cornell after being rejected from Princeton because she was a woman
Iām too tired to keep going but how about Jane Goodall, Sally Ride, Rosalind Franklin, Rachel Carson, Elizabeth Blackwell, Dorothy Hodgkin, Shirley Ann Jackson, Kalpana Chawla, Maryam Mirzakhani, Flossie Wong-Staal, Alice Ball, Ida Tacke, Ester Lederberg, Mileva Maric?

FEED YOUR BRAIN
You canāt expect to get the best out of yourself if you donāt nourish your body properly. Adding these foods to your diet will benefit your study and lifestyle in general, trust me
HEALTHY OILSĀ olive oil, avocado oil, peanut oil etc. āĀ Healthy oils are high in antioxidants such as vitamin E and they boost your memory. FISHĀ sardines, salmon etc.Ā ā Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which improve memory and focusing! COFFEE ā Caffeine wakes you up but donāt overdo it: 60 ml per dayĀ (the equivalent of two espresso) or less is enough to keep you alert, too much caffeine causes insomnia and anxiety and we donāt want that. Donāt like coffee? Try apples instead! EGGSĀ ā A source of energy, they contain proteins and choline (also called āmemory vitaminā⦠the name speaks for itself!) CHERRIESĀ ā By adding cherries into your diet, youāll get better sleep, since theyāre high in melatonin BANANASĀ ā Iām not kidding when I say I eat a banana a day. They contain magnesium, potassium, folic acid, vitamin B6 and more. What are you waiting for? Go eat a banana, your brain will thank you! NUTS & SEEDSĀ walnuts, almonds, pistachios, sunflower seeds etc.Ā ā Their nutrients reduce stress, boost memory and help your cognitive functions in general DARK CHOCOLATE ā Contains antioxidants, magnesium and flavonoids. It stimulates blood to flow to your brain and lowers blood pressure AVOCADOĀ ā Avocadoes are filled with healthy fats, magnesium and lots of vitamin E. it regulates blood pressure and improves blood flowing resulting in general brain developement and stress to decrease. BERRIESĀ blueberries, strawberries, acai berries āĀ another food that should never miss in your diet: being high in antioxidants and flavonoids, berries actually do improve your memory and focusing a lot! LEAFY GREENSĀ lettuce, spinach, kale etc.Ā ā these are loaded with magnesium, vitamins, iron⦠force yourself to eat at least one serving per day (but if you can eat more, then go for it!) BROCCOLI & ASPARAGUSĀ ā these guys are full of folic acid (1 cup = 2/3 of your daily value). Be sure to have your daily dose of folic acid, as it helps relieve stress and depression. ORANGESĀ āĀ full of vitamin C which is good for your immune system and also helps relieving stress OATSĀ ā oats will boost your serotonin levels, consequently boosting your mood. i personally recommend whole-grains TEA āĀ green tea is good for focusing and stress relief, but you know whatās even better? black tea!
tips
1. eating colorful is the easiest way to a more healthy diet (same-color foods often share same nutrients) 2. if youāre a picky eater, try disguising tastes with seasonings, spices (and everything nice) or by combining them with foods you like 3. drink water!!! at least 1 L per day!! carrying a bottle of water wherever you go is the trick! 4. plan ahead + prep your meals!! thereby you will avoid that unpleasantĀ āi donāt know what to eatā situation (which often leads to eating junk food :// ) 5. make your grocery list before going to the supermarket!!! pros: less time wasted, wonāt get distracted by other things you donāt need to buy, know ahead how much $$ youāre gonna spend 6. ALWAYS check the expiration date of products you buy + know when to consume your fruits&veggies
RECIPES
Tbh, when it comes to study snacks im a very lazy person (plus in my world time is money and i hate wasting precious study time) so i usually eat rather simple dishes. Then, what do i prep when i feel more creative?
FRUIT SALAD (easiest snack ever tbh everyone can do this no matter how bad u are at cooking)
all you need is
love
fruit of your choice
(optional) cocoa powder / cinnamon / lemon juice
what u gonna do now
wash the fruit, peel it (if needed) and then slice it
put everything in a bowl and itās good to go
BUT if you want, you can add cocoa powder, cinnamon or lemon juice for extra flavor. use your creativity, (almost) anything can work!
i love fruit salads bc theyāre healthy, easy + quick to make (not to mention super delicious)!! here you can see one i made w/ strawberries and cocoa powder
FRUIT PARFAIT (another easy option, but a more creative one *sunglasses emoji*)
all you need is
fruit (u donāt say)
oat bran
yogurt
what u gonna do now
wash, peel and slice the fruit
grab a tall glass/mug/whatever and make the first layer with fruit
then add the yogurt for the second layer
third layer is going to be the oat bran
depending on the height of the glass/mug, you may go on w/ the layers
this is optional but you can add toppings if you want to make it look even cuter (and yummier)
what i like about this big bad boy here is that itās SO fulfilling!!
BAKED PUMPKIN SEEDS (for my savory lovers out there)
all you need is
pumpkin seeds
thats it. thats all u need
what u gonna do now
take a pan and cover it with baking paper
place the seeds on the paper and cook in the oven for 20 mins at 200°C
done!! B)
super simple, isnāt it? and guess what? they actually taste like popcorn!! no lie!!!
BAKED ZUCCHINIS
all you need is
zucchinis!
lemon juice
pepper
what u gonna do now
wash and slice the zucchinis french fry style
put them in a bowl, add lemon juice + pepper and mix all well together
cover a pan with a sheet of baking paper and place the seasoned slices
cook in the oven for 20-30 mins at 200°C, flipping them over when theyāre half done
now you have a more healthy and tasty version of french fries to eat while studying!
(on a side note: you canāt even imagine how painful typing āzucchinisā was to me)
OATMEAL BANANA COOKIES (my fave!!)
all you need is
oatmeals
a banana
cinnamon or cocoa powder
what u gonna do
peel and slice the banana
smash the banana w/ a fork in a bowl, then add the oatmeals + cinnamon/cocoa powder and mix
cover the pan w/ your trusted baking paper. using a spoon, place the mixture on the paper forming little circular shapes (they donāt have to be perfect)
cook in the oven for 20 mins at 200°C (remember to flip them over at the 10mins mark)
let them cool off for 30-40 mins and theyāre ready to eat!
these take quite a bit but you can prep them before starting to study, then you do your revision/practice while you wait for them to cool off and finally you can take a break + enjoy them!

things havenāt been going my way lately + iām hoping to change that. i put together this lil guide to getting ur life back on track. i hope this helps !! :]
[+++] transitional wordsĀ | schoolĀ organizationĀ | bullet journalingĀ | motivationĀ | essay writingĀ | sat guideĀ | gr8 powerpointĀ | test taking tipsĀ | more
Hello, everyone! So recently i had exams week which means getting test results and grades. Usually, iām a straight A student (which translates to a 10 in the mexican school system), it had been over a year since the last time i got an 8 but today happened and at first i was a little upset that i didnāt work hard enough but after thinking it through i realized many things and iām here to list them for you!
Btw, i am aware that we all have different coping mechanisms these are just things that i do that i consider could be helpful for some of you! (if it was, please let me know!)
BEFORE GETTING YOUR GRADES/TAKING YOUR EXAMS
KEEP A POSITIVE MINDSET. Instead of feeling like dying because youāll have exams the next day, relax and focus on the positive and think of only getting the grades you want.
FOCUS. Although i believe miracles exist donāt think that if you decided to binge watch Gossip Girl or Sense8 instead of studying youāll magically get every good grade you want, work for it!
STUDY. I mean, this one is way too obvious but itās still important, i canāt stress enough how studying for an exam will save your life. You get to decided what technique or method you choose as long as it makes you feel like youāre actually learning something. Personally, i like to re-write the most important ideas of a topic.
ASK. If you have any questions, donāt doubt asking them! this is probably the best moment to do so and it can change your results enormously.
WHEN GETTING YOUR GRADES/TEST RESULTS
BREATHE. Before you totally give up, ask why you got that grade, maybe the teacher made a mistake, maybe you did. Either way, i find it really good to know why things didnāt turn out the way i wanted so i can pinpoint those weaknesses and turn them into strengths!
TRY TO FIX IT. When i happen to get a really bad grade, say a 6 or a 7, on a test i like to ask my teacher whether thereās a way to fix it or not, so donāt be afraid! i know it can be a little intimidating because people may call you a crybaby or something like that, trust me on this one, itāll be worth it because maybe there is a solution! and in case thereās no way to fix it, well at least you were brave enough to ask.
AND donāt forget to be really respectful towards your teacher when doing so and accept your mistakes.
DONāT BE ASHAMED. I know this one applies really differently for everyone because a lot of us are really shy/insecure but seriously, thereās nothing to be ashamed of! Iām sure even Einstein made mistakes so donāt you worry my cutie patootie, itāll be just fine
AFTER GETTING YOUR GRADES/TEST RESULTS
EXPRESS YOURSELF. Bottling things up is an awful thing to do so if you feel like crying, go ahead. No one should judge because you do and if they do⦠well, theyāre stupid.
TAKE DEFEAT AND LEARN FROM IT. After youāre done crying, screaming or whatever you did to feel better, accept your mistakes and think about what you did wrong. Was it a math function you didnāt know how to do? Was it a mind map? Whatever it was just take time to improve it so you donāt make the same mistake twice!
MOVE ON AND GET READY FOR THE NEXT TIME. Except make sure this time you figured out what you did wrong last time (e.g. procrastinating too much, not studying, not getting enough sleep, etc) and make sure you donāt do it again!
And if it doesnāt work, repeat every step until you finally get what you want!
Remember, everyday brings a new chance to start over. I wish you guys the best and for you all to be successful little flowers, ily š¼š·š¹šøšŗš»š
āWhen defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans are not sound, rebuild those plans, and set sail once more toward your coveted goal.ā ā Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich
8ā¢1 I'mš·so all I do is read, drink tea, eat raspberries and repeat; its niceā¦..
i canāt wait for the day when all the studyblrs slowly start turning into career blogs as we graduate and finally get our dream jobs
