Remember, it's not the counterspells that are killing you.
It’s the card draw keeping that player’s hand full of counterspells and getting deeper for answers that are. Think about it this way:

This is why I run standstill or brainstorm in Merfolk. I've been mocked for including brainstorm but the tempo it creates, plus being able to dig instantly for answers. Why do most Merfolk players shun this?
Edit: I just realized that this makes it sound like I run brainstorm. I don't. I run Standstill.
Oh. Hey there. I, I'm not sure what to say. Wow. 4x Lord of Atlantis 4x Master of pearl trident 4x Merrow Reerjery 4x Phantasmal Image 4x Curse Catcher 4x (That U cost merfolk that makes target land an island) 4x Aquatics will 4x Æther Vial 4x Force of will 4x Daze 4x Wasteland 16x Islands Merfolk!!!!
Phone, four inches deep, in the shin. 48% chance of survival? BRING IT ON.
Stabbed by my hair comb/pick 3 inches deep in the back of my head with a 01% chance of survival.
Best news all day.
Stabbed by my G1 Soundwave, 8 inches deep in the neck, 66% chance of survival.
Stabbed by gatorade? 3 inches in my foot, 60% chance of survival?
Lord of Atlantis, 7inches deep, 4% chance of surviving. I always knew Magic would be the death of me.
You have no idea how much I like this guy. NO IDEA!

I did alright at the gpt for columbus making top 4 but falling out to Tron. I wasn't running the proper land destruction to be able to deal with Tron. Merfolk really suffers in Modern because we lose the counters that help us tick. ie: Force of will and Daze. Played against two different versions of storm, and won against both of them. Played a Living end cascade deck that ran beautifully. Too bad for him I had counters and graveyard hate. Tormod's crypt was a real star for me. I shut down re-animator style decks storm decks that relied on past in flames, and shut down a Melira pod's infinite life gain.
Now if I had access to tectonic edge I can hope that instead of going 1 - 2 against tron I would've punched through. One card that was in my sideboard that I brought in very often was Chalice of the void. Setting chalice at one got me an instant concede from the pyromancer's ascension decks and shut down a large part of many decks. No Birds of Paradise, no lighting bolts, path to exile, and on and on. The only downside for me is that it shuts down two spells in my deck, vapor snag and spell peirce, and the oh so important AEther vial.
When I plan on running Chalice i pull out the Snags and run other bounce spells. I keep the spell pierce in since I tend to need the early counter. Having two mana and a Chalice and Aether vial in hand is a great draw for this deck. A turn one Aether vial followed on turn two by a Chalice set to one is easily one of the best starts for the deck.
All and all good times were had and it was truly an enjoyable learning experience.
Grand prix trial today
Wish my merfolk luck.
RG Aggro Vs RW Humans G3
Or, “So many Vanguards.”
Reblogging for the playmats ad at the beginning. Going to get a custom one soon.
Woot! Top 8!
The deck that i took to the Avacyn Restored Game Day did fairly well. i placed somewhere between 5th - 7th, not really sure and I didn't ask. I was able to lockdown pretty much every deck I came across until Top 8.
I ended up losing to RG Aggro when my Day of Judgments weren't showing up and the other player had a very developed field. They had just used Increasing Savagery on A Champion of Lambchops making their whole team unblockable. A cloudshifted Fiend Hunter took care of that, but let loose the other Lambchop out from under it. My opponent smiled dropped a Gavony Township and bumped the Lambchop up just enough to make my Fiend Hunter unable to chump block a 12/12 Dungrove elder.
He was sitting at 5 life and I had three transformed Insectile Aberrations. It was a close one. He had gained 20 life thus far from Sheltering Word. Like I said it was a crazy.
Pretty solid Spirits there! If I could afford Trafts I'd be running something pretty similar xD
I can't afford the trafts. i traded for two and I'm borrowing the rest. Having lots of Magic playing friends is wonderful. I'm letting a buddy borrow my two Wolfir Silver-Hearts
Avacyn Game Day! Oh wait...
Ah shit it's standard. I don't play standard.Ah screw it I'll just make a silly little blue white control deck. Let's see...
3x Fiend Hunter 2x Dungeon geists
So to go with the Ghostliness
4x Drogskol Captian
Then of course
4x Phantasmal Image
To clone my lords or my lockdown creatures.
Since I have a spirits sub theme already
3x Geist of Saint traft
Need some cheaper creatures so...
4x Delver of Secrets
Now for some control spells
4x Mana leak/Negate
Probably a 3/1 split there. Add in some more lockdown.
3x Oblivion Ring
Cheap tap down effects with some flashback for when things get testy or when I'm playing against mana ramp creatures.
4x Feeling of Dread
Some chump blocker creation/ flood them with an army of 1/1s
4x Lingering Souls
Some wrath for aggro decks
2x Day of Judgment
Then its mana base time!
Tamiyo tapping down a human.

Drafting Avacyn Restored
I went into yesterdays draft hoping to run white/red humans. This was not the case at all. There was very little in the packs that would lead me to draft white/red humans. No Lightning Maulers, no Silverblade Paladins, no Thatcher Revolts either. I also didn't see any of the combat tricks that I wanted, Uncanny Speed into Rush of Blood being one of them. i did see one Zealous Strike come around to me, and as I had settled into a early to mid range white/blue deck, I pulled it quickly. I was passed an early Entreat the Angels and a Lunar Mystic was looking to join my deck as well. A few cheap fliers and two copies of Favorable Winds finished of the deck.
What really ended up bringing the deck home was the two Latch Seekers that were given likelink via Nearheath Pilgrim. Six unblockable lifelink damage each turn makes that 7/7 Vorstclaw you waited to play seem kinda silly huh?
I ended up going 4-1 in total losing to a deck that punished me for using cheap fliers in the semi-finals.
I also had someone miss the trigger four times on Triumph of Ferocity. Normally in a fun draft setting i would point out this to the other player, but the player sitting across from me was confidentially being the biggest dick I have ever played against. He said that everyone but him had built a bunch of garbage decks and that he was easily the best player in the shop (I'm paraphrasing and dropping the cussing). When he noticed that he had not drawn a card for the triggers he asked if he could draw them. As he was already passed his draw step and onto main phase 1 at the time I smiled and said no and called over a judge. The other player ended up getting a waning for failing to maintain the game state and was not allowed to draw off the missed triggers. Doesn't help him that he was mocking the judge earlier.
All and all I had some very fun match ups, including a mirror match in the quarter finals that ran out of time in match 1.
Uncanny speed into Rush of Blood.
During a world game earlier today I had a mythic angel rotting in hand. A control deck was sitting solid with o-rings in hand. Someone attacked with a trampler that was a 10/10. The control deck blocked 6 of it. I then laid two uncanny speeds, 6/ 0, down on it followed by a rush of blood, 16/ 0. Next turn I laid down blossom, the red white mythic angel, and coasted to an easy victory.
