Very controlled, put-together, cold characters losing itâąïž is one of thee sexiest things in fiction
updated Ulf + Anna
Fair warning, this blog is about to become a The Next Unknown blog for a little while, sorry not sorry
Still conflicted thinking about Ulf...
The axis of Ulfâs whole existence is Anna; Ulf is focused on her protection above all else, even experiencing her emotions and going instantly on the defensive when Anna is upset. That all of this comes directly from Elsa herself- a direct reflection of her feelings- produces some major... feels and compromises my fragile heart. But then at the same time Ulf is hurting Elsa nearly every time theyâre around too so... Iâm just.... GAH
Why does everything in The Next Unknown have to be so damn poignant and painful and layered and nuanced itâs A LOT TO DEAL WITH
(yes i know i drew annaâs jacket motif upside down donât @ me)
Ulf is a great character, I do not like Ulf
Some musings on one of the characters from The Next Unknown By @themarshmallowattack
(Full disclaimer I have not gone back to read the chapter(s) Ulf first appears oops)
At first, while reading I was like: âwhy, whhhhhyyy does Ulf treat her this way, what the hell itâs awful TT__TTâ. But after actually taking a moment to sit with it, I believe I understand whatâs happening.
It feels like Ulf treats Elsa how she feels she should be treated... where Anna is concerned. Ulf is an indication that Elsa still wrestles with self loathing and guilt (hardly a stretch, after all it is Elsa). Looking back to the moment she made Ulf (as far as I can recollect), the strongest emotions in that moment were triggered by being unable to reach Anna; after all this time, it was one more instance Elsa couldnât be there for Anna when she needed it. Another moment when sheâd failed her, during potentially the most fatal of circumstances.
Elsa essentially created a version of herself in wolf form for Anna; one utterly devoted to her protection and possessing an empathy so strong it appears to feel Annaâs emotions as she does. One also filled with all of Elsaâs self loathing, now turned back on her as hate.
Itâs as though Ulf looks at Elsa the way Elsa, in her worst moments, feels Anna should look at herâ with wariness, distrust, always assuming Elsa will hurt her...
Itâs one thing to see Elsa internalize and feel those things about herself, but it is so different to have that directed back at her from an outside sourceâ one that doesnât view (isnât capable of viewing?) her or her circumstances with any compassion. Add to that itâs part of her magic, a sentient being she created, and itâs indifferent to her at best, downright hostile towards her at worst?
I do not like
I do not like
Not to mention, as far as I can remember/tell, Elsa herself doesnât seem to realize the origins of Ulfâs behavior? She just accepts it because, well of course she deserves to be treated that way.
Some things never changeâbut after Ahtohallan, quite a lot did. Now Anna and Elsa somehow need to find their own paths without losing sight of each other. Except the world won't wait, and when war threatens Arendelle's shores, the sisters learn that sometimes you can't do the next right thing without the courage to confront what last went wrong.
Itâs heeeeereeeee!! I had to reread the whole fic to reconnect with the story just for this chapter⊠and also because my memory is crap. I forgot so much about my own fic itâs embarrassing heheheâŠ.
That said, it HAS been over two years since TNUâs first chapter and so much has happened in the story (in confusing ways because I ingeniously didnât plan ahead), so itâs probably a good time to reread the last 10 or so chapters in case nothing makes sense as we head into the final arc.
Thank you for sticking with me throughout this journey! đ

December Contest Submission #10: Echoes of You

******************
Murky light filtered into the apartment through sheer damask curtains. Another grey morning, full of clouds that blocked the sun but refused to provide any rain. Existing in a state in between.Â
Anna could relate.Â
Nestled in bed, she blew out a noisy breath through her mouth, staring up at the ceiling. Familiar patterns and faces morphed in the plaster before fading again, like the hazy pieces of her dream. The phantom touch of a hand clasped in hers lingered; Anna hadnât seen the face, but she knew who it belonged to. All that remained of the dream were uncomfortable remnants, squirming in her chest like the last bitter dregs of coffee at the bottom of the cup.Â
In a perfect world sheâd be able to press skip on this whole day. And the rest of the year.Â

The Three Laws of Fandom
If you wish to take part in any fandom, you need to accept and respect these three laws.
If you arenât able to do that, then you need to realise that your actions are making fandom unsafe for creators. That you are stifling creativity.
Like vaccination, fandom only works if everyone respects these rules. Creators need to be free to make their fanart, fanfics and all other content without fear of being harassed or concern-trolled for their creative choices, no matter whether you happen to like that content or not.
The First Law of Fandom
Donât Like; Donât Read (DL;DR)
It is up to you what you see online. It is not anyone elseâs place to tell you what you should or should not consume in terms of content; it is not up to anyone else to police the internet so that you do not see things you do not like. At the same time, it is not up to YOU to police fandom to protect yourself or anyone else, real or hypothetical.
There are tools out there to help protect you if you have triggers or squicks. Learn to use them, and to take care of your own mental health. If you are consuming fan-made content and you find that you are disliking it - STOP.
The Second Law of Fandom
Your Kink Is Not My Kink (YKINMK)
Simply put, this means that everyone likes different things. Itâs not up to you to determine what creators are allowed to create. Itâs not up to you to police fandom.Â
If you donât like something, you can post meta about it or create contrarian content yourself, seek to convert other fans to your way of thinking. Â
But you have no right to say to any creator âI do not like this, therefore you should not create it. Nobody should like this. It should not exist.â
Itâs not up to you to decide what other people are allowed to like or not like, to create or not to create. Thatâs censorship. Donât do it.
The Third Law of Fandom
Ship And Let Ship (SALS)
Much (though not all) fandom is about shipping. There are as many possible ships as there are fans, maybe more. You may have an OTP (One True Pairing), you may have a NOTP, that pairing that makes you want to barf at the very thought of its existence.
Itâs not up to you to police ships or to determine what other people are allowed to ship. Just because you find that one particular ship problematic or disgusting, does not mean that other people are not allowed to explore its possibilities in their fanworks.
You are free to create contrarian content, to write meta about why a particular ship is repulsive, to discuss it endlessly on your private blog with like-minded persons.
It is not appropriate to harass creators about their ships, it is not appropriate to demand they do not create any more fanworks about those ships, or that they create fanwork only in a manner that you deem appropriate.
These three laws add up to the following:
You are not paying for fanworks content, and you have no rights to it other than to choose to consume it, or not consume it. If you do choose to consume it, do not then attack the creator if it wasnât to your taste. Thatâs the height of bad manners.
Be courteous in fandom. It makes the whole experience better for all of us.

Elsa has loved Anna, unconditionally, irrevocably, since the moment she was born.
Only years later does she realize that love has transformed in a way she never anticipated, with ramifications she never could have expected.

Elsa was three years old when her world changed forever.Â
It was high summer, and the castle had reached a fever pitch of frenetic activity as the entire kingdom awaited the birth of the queenâs second child. Her labor was longer and more fraught than that of her first child, the crown princess; Elsa was an easy baby from the moment she came into the world as Arendelleâs heir.
The princess sat quietly in her room with a nursemaid while they waited for news. When the king came to get her hours later, Elsa took her fatherâs hand, a strange premonition building with each step closer to her parentsâ room.Â
Her mother was propped up in bed, looking drained but radiant. Instantly, Elsaâs eyes were riveted to the swaddled bundle in the queenâs arms. Her hand fell from her fatherâs grip, and she padded up to the bed in hushed anticipation. The bundle was titled towards her so she could see, and a scrunched little face with a head of bright, strawberry blonde hair came into view.Â
