Physical media matters, fuck Sony
Our survival is your survival.
I live in Wales, in a temperate rainforest climate. Our usual maximum temperature for June is maybe 18-20ÂșC (64-68ÂșF)? Most of the time it's 10-18ÂșC (50-64ÂșC). [source]
Today it went up to 31ÂșC (88ÂșF). I live in a very small terraced bungalow, with nice big west-facing windows. I have a portable air conditioner, the kind where you stick a tube out of the window. Today, first thing when I got up, I set up the air conditioner and stuck the tube out of the window and taped towels over the opening around the tube so that hot air from outside couldn't get in. I closed all the windows and doors, and pulled down all the black-out blinds. I covered my front door with a blanket. You know, all the usual advice - turned my house into a dark box. I didn't even turn on the TV.
My air conditioner is meant to work well in a room up to 70mÂł (2,472ftÂł? That is such a big number, did I get that right?) and up to 30ÂșC (86ÂșF), and it will keep it as cool as 18ÂșC (64ÂșF). I calculated that the space I was asking it to cool today was 33.4mÂł (1,180ftÂł). In the hottest part of the day the air conditioner couldn't even get the room down to 24ÂșC (74ÂșF).
it's not because the air conditioner is bad. It's highly rated, I was very careful when shopping around. My house is just like that. It was built by the council many decades ago, and it is still a council property, which means they don't have the money to retrofit all their properties to account for the climate shift by adding built-in air conditioners or whatever else.
The low temperature outdoors overnight was maybe 19ÂșC (66ÂșF), which is the hottest it is supposed to get in the entire daytime. Even if I open all my windows overnight, when I wake up in the morning my living room is already 24ÂșC (75ÂșF) because it holds onto the heat, and without the portable air conditioner, even with all the doors and windows and blinds closed, even if I do no cooking or using hot water, it will go over 30ÂșC (86ÂșF) in my living room. In order to be comfortable I have to stay in my bedroom, because it's the only room the air conditioner can keep cool enough - it's 23.7mÂł (837ftÂł) and on the less sunny side of the house. (Again, this air conditioner is meant to work well in a room up to 70mÂł (2,472ftÂł).)
So all of that is just for today, when we're in a heatwave and the high temperature was 31ÂșC. The day after tomorrow is the hottest day of the heatwave, and it'll be 36ÂșC (97ÂșF). I already have one of the best portable air conditioners money can buy, and it's already not enough.
And like Greta said yesterday...

Literally every single Neuroscience guy I listen to on audiobooks and podcasts: Multitasking is a lie. You are not more efficient. You're just rapidly switching between tasks and doing all of them slower but your brain is tricking itself into thinking it's more efficient because you get a little dopamine reward when you activate the 'change task' neurons. And you're burning up way more glucose in the process, leaving you more tired with less done. STOP MULTITASKING. JUST DO ONE THING. PLEASE IT'S ONLY WORSENING YOUR ATTENTION SPAN. WE'RE BEGGING YOU, PLEA--
My ADHD: Don't listen to them, babydoll. You are sooooooo efficient and attractive. Whoop. You got an email. Whoop you got a text. Whoop you got a blog ask. WOW look at all the tabs open on this window. Do you even remember what they're all for? Better look through them and close the ones you're not using because you're soooo sexy and efficient. Whoop, email again.

lifes so hard
âHaha remember when murder-hornets were gonna be a thing? What a nothingburger.â
Yes, because the Washington state government activated like a sleeper-cell and ruthlessly, systematically hunted them down and annihilated them.
âY2K came to nothing amirite?â
Yes because an army of software engineers working around the clock, losing sleep, and busting ass till the last minute prevented it from happening.
âRemember the hole in the ozone layer?â
You mean the one that was fixed through rigorous world wide government action?
One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those âitâs gonna be an apocalypseâ disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.
The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.
And I still think thatâs going to happen. I donât know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope wonât help bring it about.
And I refuse to let the cynics own a chunk of my heart.
Happy Smallpox Eradication Day
Except, critically, at bedtime.
Ravings and urges get miscoded over time. Letâs say youâre thirsty, and you live in a strawberry field. Strawberries contain some water and a bunch of sugar so, over time, you may start to crave strawberries when you are thirsty because you get a reward and some relief in shorter time from the need starting than the trek to the stream. This can happen for every need: sleep, food, whatever.
Trevor Noah has a great tip, that when he craves ice cream at night he breaks it down into parts: I want something cold, I want something sweet. He drinks a glass of cold water then waits to see if he still has the ice cream craving. Usually he doesnât.
So listening to your body isnât âfollow every urgeâ but âdecompose the urge to discover the underlying need.â
If you always feel like getting cozy in bed you may be: cold, dehydrated, and/or malnourished (maybe a need for high calories that are bioaccessibleâŠnot processed).
If you do not feel tired at bedtime you may: need to eat dinner earlier because your body is still digesting, need to exercise or go outside more during the day, get the fuck off your screen for an hour so your brain can enter sleep mode.
Hope this helps someone.
P.S. notice i said nothing about neurodivergence. Not that itâs not a likelihood but the over-pathologization of behaviors prevents us from taking simple actions to improve our wellbeing. Also, these tips are pretty accessible and applicable to most brain variations.
I just googled this and⊠yes, itâs absolutely real.
And there are so many articles and videos and discussions. Like, the scientific community is buzzing about this.
So much research will have to be redone because the data was absolutely compromised, off by orders of magnitude, by using standard lab gloves.
The world is probably not horrifically contaminated by microplastics. Sterile laboratories, however, are contaminated by latex and nitrile gloves.
Thank God someone bothered to check.
