âCHRIS??????â
âUm, I donât think our plan is gonna work.â
Sorry this is too cool itâs a crime
Your wife changes her hair color every season and her personality adjusts slightly. Youâre secretly only in love with Autumn wife. She just came home sporting her Winter color.
itâs my fault. itâs just that when we met it was autumn; her red-orange hair and crackling laughter. thereâs a little spooky in her, a lot of play. and what a better time for falling?
i didnât realize it for the first few years - something shifting, something so subtle. the winter makes us all cold, the summer makes us all a little out of our minds. i just loved her, because she was incredible, and i was the luckiest person alive.
itâs just that i realized that spring came with sudden bursts of cold. itâs just that summer frequently raged in with fire sprouting from her lips. itâs just that winter was the worst of all, her eyes dead. itâs just that autumn loves me different; throws herself into it without the clingy sweat of summer. i used to love that summer girl, you know? i loved how wild she was, the way in summer she took every risk she could. but i carried her home drunk one too many times, cleaned up one too many of the messes she made for no reason than to enjoy the sensation of burning. and winter was worse; the shutdown, the isolation. how she became distant, a blizzard, caught up in her own head, unable to tell me what was wrong and unable to think i actually wanted to listen.
she comes home, her hair bleached white. a dark smile on her lips. the shadowy parts of her are back. they loom like icicles overhead. she kisses me with her body held at a distance, a peck on my cheek that feels like an iceberg. she makes polite conversation and we go to bed early, our bodies untouching.Â
it is a lonely season, i think on the ninth day of this. winter is cold. winter is known for the death of things. when i look at her, i see the girl i fell for, inhabited by an alien. she was the first women i loved so much i felt it would kill me. i canât leave. when i wake her up with my crying, she tells me to shush and go back to sleep. sheâs different like this, quiet, doesnât eat.Â
three days later i stare at myself in the mirror. i wonder if itâs me. if the fat on my body or something in my face or the wrinkles and she doesnât love me. i try prettier lingerie, lean cuisine, i try different hair, more makeup, try harder. it doesnât work. she looks at me the same; that empty gaze that neither loves nor condemns my actions.Â
somewhere in februrary i lose it. weâre fighting again, from car to restaurant to car to home again. we fight about stupid things, small things; i tell her i feel she doesnât love me, she says iâm not listening. the circle goes around and around, old pain peeling back, new pain unhealing. i sleep on the couch.
i wake up when i hear her crying, white hair around her all messed up. the kind of sobbing that only comes at two in the morning, heavy and thick and hurting. my winter girl. my heart is breaking. she looks up at me like iâm her anchor. âiâm sorry iâm like this,â she says. and i start saying, itâs okay iâm here weâre married, but she just shakes her head and says, âI know this isnât the real me.â
i hold her cold hand. she stares at the blankets. âi am different in winter,â she whispers, âi know i am and iâm sorry.â she looks at me. âwhy do you think i dye my hair? cut it off? get rid of the old me?â
i tell her itâs okay. weâre together and itâs okay, and then she whispers, âiâm sorry you married four of me.â
we lay there like that, her head on my chest. she falls asleep. i stare at the ceiling, thinking of the way she sounded when she was crying. how i helped put her in that pain. how i promised in sickness and in health and everything in between.
the next day i spend at the library. there arenât enough books on how to love someone with seasonal affective disorder so i make my own, notes and pages and little ideas on post-its. and i take a deep breath and make myself a promise.
she comes home to her favorite dinner and we kiss and sheâs uneasy but thatâs okay. the next day i bring home flowers and the next day she finds little love notes in her pockets. i love her quiet, the way winter demands, understand her sex drive is faltering; spend more time just cuddling. we drink wine and we kiss and some part of her starts relaxing.Â
the truth is there is no loving someone out of their mental illness. the truth is that you can love someone in despite of it; love them loud enough to give them an excuse to believe they can make their way out of it.
and i learn. i remember the rebirth of spring, when she starts thawing. we kiss and have picnics in pretty dresses. i remember her joy at little birds and her rain dancing. i fall in love with the flowers in her cheeks and the little bursts of cleaning. i fall in love with summerâs slow walks and milkshakes and shouting to music playing too loud on the speakers. i fall in love with her dancing, with the sunfire energy. and when winter comes; i am ready. i remember that snow used to look pretty. i fall in love with the hearth of her, with the holiday, with the slow smile that spreads across her face so shyly. i fall in love with how she looks in boots and mittens and every day i find another reason to love her the way she deserves - they way i always should have.
she comes home with her white hair and dark smile and a package in her hands. i ask to see what it is and that small shy grin comes creeping out. itâs a sunlamp packed in with medication. she looks at me with those wide eyes and that beautiful winter blush. âiâm trying to get better,â she whispers, âi promise.â
recovery doesnât look immediate. sometimes it isnât neat. i canât say we never fight or that weâre suddenly complete. but each day, that tiny girlâs strength gives me another reason. i love her. i love her while she tames the roller coaster of spring; i love her for reigning in the summer storms; i love her for taking her winter and trying to be warm. it is hard, because everything worth it is hard. she spreads out her autumn leaves; mixes the best parts of her into everything. learns to take winterâs silence for a moment before yelling in summer. learns to take autumnâs spice and give it to spring. we are both learning.
one day she comes home and her hair is different, but itâs a style i donât know. i kiss it and tell her that sheâs beautiful and the inside of me swells like a flood. iâm so glad that sheâs mine. every part of her. the whole. i am the luckiest person on earth. and i always have been. but sheâs hugging me and saying, âthank you for helping me,â and i canât explain why iâm crying.
this is what love is; not always an emotion but rather your actions. the choices we make when we realize our lives would be empty if the other was absent. this is what love is: letting them grow, helping them find their way in out of the cold. this is what love is: sometimes it takes work to see how the thing you planted together actually grows.
this is what love looks like in an autumn girl: it is winter and she glows.
Iâm actually sobbing jesus christ
my heart is aching??? this is gorgeous
Wow. Worth the read, donât scroll.
This is everything.
Everything about how to love.
I was not prepared
Nor was I.

This is beyond beautiful. Thanks for doing this prompt @inkskinned
The Sound Of Silence really does exist, and itâs the lingering echoes of the Big Bang. Without warning, those echoes finally fade and stop⌠and you can hear what true silence sounds like for the first timeâŚ
We donât go insane. Thatâs the first worry, what has all of the scientists and psychologists and fucking politicians in a tizzy. Everyoneâs read about the silent rooms you can go into, so quiet that you can hear the blood rushing through your veins. Everyone knows what happens to those people, the sort of hallucinations they hear, the sort of things the mind will do to protect itself.
But we donât go insane.
ItâsâŚbizarre how easy hearing is now. Like weâd all had our fingers in our ears all our lives and were in a soundproof box in the middle of the ocean. Itâs surprising that it doesnât hurt, this new way of hearing, because everything is so loud.
âSandy.â
Hear that? Thatâs my mom calling my name from downstairs. Sheâs not yelling or anything. She just said it, nearly whispered it. But thereâs nothing stopping her voice now and thereâs nothing stopping mine as I tell her that Iâll be right there.
Itâs weird how it works. Youâd think that weâd be deaf or super sensitive to noise now or something, but no. We can just hear further now and better.
Down the street, I can hear my friends getting ready for school. Zippers and clothing rustling, easy breathing. Itâs only when I focus, really, and Iâd quickly found that not everyone can sort the noise like I can, but itâs possible. I can hear Sydney sneeze and Matt muttering out math equations and my little sister still asleep in her crib.Â
Itâd been a little overwhelming at first, but it turns out weâd all been made for this in some way or another. I can sort better than anyone I know, but Momâs good at directional hearing and Sydney knows how to block everything out and Matt never really listens anyway. We all cope. We all survive.
âSandy, please. Thereâs something I need you to see.â

I think I may have experienced my first episode of sleep paralysis the night before last.
I was sleeping in my new camp hammock, outside in the woods near my parents house... It's one of those really comfy lightweight ones that kinda fold in and cocoons you.
I couldn't get to sleep at all, I had not taken my sleeping/evening meds, and it was just a super rough night to try to sleep, no matter how comfy the hammock was.
Around 3am, I guess a dozed off finally but I would up with this intense fear like I haven't felt since I was actually, for real, paralyzed a few years ago... (That's a whole other story)
I couldnt move, my whole body felt stiff and frozen to the core... And this whole time, my mind was filled with this raw, very intense fear or something.... I think my mind was playing tricks on me, cause I was convinced that I heard growling and something very large stomping around outside my hammock... Sometime very close, very big....
I know these woods, like that back of my hand, I know them.... there is nothing there that would sound like that.... I'm certain that it was an adutory hallucination..
Like, I'm getting a little weirded out now thinking about it...
It took me about an hour of just being frozen, to slightly moving my fingers, to slowly making sure the rest of my body could move.... I still never looked outside, cause I was sure that doing so would have only givrn creedance to the hallucination... I dunno...
It was a rough night.....
Noob Dungeons and Dragons
So, a group of friends and I (5 total) recently decided to 'dio our toes' into playing DnD.. I've been on the fringes of play groups and similar games, but never in my 33 years have I actually played or even bothered to learn the game..
I play semi-competitive Magic: The Gathering, so that level of nerdom wouldn't have seemed like a big step... But, I'll be honest, I was apprehensive. I don't know why...
Anyway, I bought the $20 into kit.. the one with some premade character sheets, a planned adventure, and a condensed rule book, and we played....
We've had two sessions so far, and I can honestly say that it has been some of the funnest, truly engaging, play I've had in quite a while... Ever, even...
MTG has provided me years of fun and mental stimulation, but when I started 'getting serious' about the game it became more about winning than having fun...
That's not to say that I don't have fun playing magic, I do. But it's not the same as it was once.
Anyhow, I don't know where I was really going with this but to say that I think maybe I've found once again that 'holy shit, that was fun' thing in my life... And I like that feeling... Spending time with good friends, sharing stories, building an adventure, and just letting myself get caught up in it all....
I don't know why I was ever so hesitant, but perhaps it was for the better then so I could have this experience now later in life when I can appreciate more the time to relax and do nothing but have fun in the midst of my life with work and the other tedium that comes along with being an affiliate doing adulting things ..
With that,

How will the people in the ship not get gibbed?
Because the warp drive doesnât actually accelerate the ship, it just makes the space in front of it smaller and the space behind it larger. Or something.
it works like this
Objects cannot accelerate to the speed of light within normal spacetime; instead, the Alcubierre drive shifts space around an object so that the object would arrive at its destination faster than light would in normal space without breaking any physical laws.
A WRINKLE IN TIME IS COMING TRUEÂ
We gonna be surfing gravity waves!!

I love how mankindâs solution to ftl is just to bend to rules of reality a little.
Universe: ok human, with the physical laws as they are you canât go faster than the speed of light.
Humanity: ok, let me just figure out how to manipulate space time so I can go FASTER!
I think it would actually go like this.
Universe: ok human, with the physical laws as they are you canât go faster than the speed of light.
Humanity: ok, but........ What if.
Universe: ARRRRGGGHHHH!!! OK, FINE.... I MADE ALL THESE RULES FOR EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE BUT YOU FUCKERS ARE THE ONLY ONES TRYING TO WORK AROUND THEM... do whatever you want, I'm done..

Aliens find out about Human Body Modification
Iâve seen a lot of these about how humans will cause serious harm to themselves, even cutting off pieces of themselves if trapped. But, what about the first time a naive alien race encounters all the on purpose stuff humans do to their bodies for no logical reason other that âi like itâ
Aliens know about injecting pigments into human skin for aesthetics, and that was weird. What rational species would willingly do that to themselves? But, they got through that and everything was fine. But one day, this really really strange specimen of an human came on board. This on had horns under itâs skin on itâs head, and itâs earlobes weâre punctured and discs the were in the holes⌠and these arenât biological replacements, these discs were large and made of fibrous matter later identified as âexotic woodâ But the horns⌠the aliens are dumbfounded. Some alien species grow horns, of course, but no one had ever seen a human with such appendages. And they were tiny, so small as to have not even broken through the skin yet for the bone material to show. Was this human only just beginning itâs maturation cycle? What about the other humans without horns? Will they grow horns? Are the horns part of a reproductive cycle, and would they be subject to the same will to have sex organs covered as most other human have?
Finally, an alien who had spent like enough time with humans to have learned the idea of âasking a hard questionâ greets this new human and inquires about these horns.
The response?
âOh yeah, man⌠my implants⌠I had them installed a year agoâ
*incredulously* âinstalled?â
âYeah, theyâre just silicone. Not real horns, I just wanted to look like I have horns, so I found a guy that cut my head open and put them inâ
*agahst* âyou had another human cut into your head and insert a foreign object into it simply because you wanted to look different?â
âYep, pretty muchâ âJust wait until I tell you about that time I was pierced by large hooks in my back and hung on then to swing around and have fun. Thatâs a great story, wanna see the scarsâ
Three surrounding aliens faint, and one runs back to the captain screaming in terror that they had found the Alpha-Reckless HumanâŚ.
GorlonâAqix upon noticing the healing wounds on my ears. âWhat manner of injury did you sustain? Was it as a result of combat? Theyâre not round anymore and Iâm concerned for your auditory competenceâ âNo, I got my ears pointed, this was the second time, and donât worry I can still hear just fineâ âYou got your earsâŚ.pointed?â *looking horrified* âYep!â â Is it a medical procedure? What does that involve? What benefit does it serve?â âSort of, I guess you could technically call it surgery but we just call it body modification. It involves cutting a tiny piece of the earâs helix off, folding it to bring the exposed pieces together and suturing them very tightly so that both the skin and cartilage fuse together.â âYou got someone to âŚ.cut a piece of your ear off and sew the remainder together in a different orientation? AGAIN?! WHY?!?!â âYes, the points were subtle the first time, I wanted more pronounced points. I got them because I wanted to have elf earsâ âAh yes, I read about that fictional race, they look much like our allies the Andelae. I find it strange how much your race cares about appearance..â âYou think this is weird?âŚâ *sticks out her split tongue and moves the points in opposing directions* ââŚand thereâs this thing some people do to their sclera that I wââ *GorlonâAqix vomits, then faints*
i dont care if u never listen to me ever again just let me be ur internet dad for just one second: dont start cutting yourselves please ever
ok im gonna reblog this again bc i want more ppl to see it?? ive compiled a (by no means complete) list of the things u can expect if u start:
- u cant stop. its a legitimate addiction. there is no âseeing what its likeâ. its soso hard to stop it and believe me, because that was me. i thought i would sate my curiosity but all i did was make my life miserable - everything can become a trigger. someone carved things in a table?? trigger. u get a scratch by accident?? trigger. see something sharp?? yup. - the scars dont go away and if people see them (and no matter how hard you try, people will see them) they get this awful fucking look on their face like a mixture of disgust and horror and pity - u have to sit through people making shitty fucking jokes and calling people like you (real, struggling people like you) edgy emos looking for attention and it makes you feel sick but you have to sit there silently - in fact, any conversation about self harm becomes thoroughly uncomfortable because theyâll talk about it like no one in the room has ever gone through it (or, if they know, theyâll glance at you out the corner of their eye when they think you cant see) - any emotion can give you the urges- not just negative. ur body associates the happy feeling with the pain so ur brain is like â????? u cant have one without the other??â - it can have been years. years. you can have stopped and got better and youâll still feel the urge to hurt yourself and it makes you feel like you havenât improved at all and youâre still fourteen and hating yourself - (maybe this is just me) but some part of you misses it?? you stopped and you know its horrific but its so difficult to get rid of your blades or whatever you use because you feel so weirdly attached to these things that are so awful and you dont even know whyÂ
god damn i just want yall to understand that you dont have to hurt yourself ever, okay?? just. donât. trust me.
!!!
Yesâźď¸âźď¸âźď¸
I get this^^^
Itâs true
And please, please understand that the urge doesn't care what gender you are either. There's so much social stigma on females with it, that a lot of people almost forget that people who have penises can fall into that hole as well....
I'm sorry if this isn't helpful, but I gotta get something out
I've been there, and it fucking sucks.
I haven't self harmed with a blade in years, but that urge has never gone away. Those triggers never went away. I find myself absently, litterally, punching cinderblock walls as I walk down the street, or in my office at work. A part of me knows that my brain has substituted one for another at this point and it sucks and I fucking hate it. But it doesn't change that when I get a new assisgnment for some math to be worked out and I'm stressed trying to find the proof, or trying to figure out what the testing results mean, I envirably will start doing that shit without even realizing it. Won't even know until I get an idea to try a new formula and I can't hold my pen without staining the page and can extend my fingers to type....
I have fucking wrecked my body over self harm, and I fucking hate it. I wish I had never thought about it in the first place near enough to 20 years old.
That a 'successfull' person like me is still struggling with it on the regular is not something that gets a lot of play.
Point being, just fucking dont, yo. It will be with you, in some form or another, for the rest of your life. Long after whatever is drawing you near to it now. Longer after that is dead and gone, self harm will linger and be that grey companion.
Don't let it.
is there a word for âi was instantly good at a lot of things as a quote-unquote gifted child, and, as a result, i was able to skate by without ever being taught how to actually learn a new skill, and now that iâm an adult trying to learn new things that i canât be good at instantaneously, i donât have the patience or knowledge to improve on them, because skills that donât come naturally to me just make me angry because i lived off instant gratification my whole childhood due to not ever being challenged intellectually or taught basic learning skills?â asking for a friend
people like this piss me the fuck off
why does everyone refuse to consider the possibility that maybe an education system designed from the ground up to turn intelligent and creative children into mindlessly efficient factory drones might have a negative effect on the people it deems (correctly or not; usually not) to be more intelligent and creative than average?
we were punished for âlearning too fastâ by having the lessons about how to learn taken away from us, and by couching it all in positive language so that our peers would resent and isolate us. literally all of us know weâre not better than anyone else, but that doesnât seem to matter in the face of âi was jealous in elementary school and have held on to that for 15+ years.â
when we say things like âi donât know how to learn things that i donât immediately understandâ you hear âi was that kid you hated because i never studied but i always got a 100% on the test anyway,â but what we mean is:
i have a vague understanding of what a flash card is, but no idea how to make them or what to do with them
i have literally no idea how to take notes because:
i donât know what iâll forget if i donât write it down
i donât know how to pay attention to whatâs being said while i write
i wouldnât know what to do with the notes anyway
if i donât understand something, i donât know how to formulate a question
i donât know how to recognize when i donât know something until it goes wrong, at which point i donât know how to identify what i did wrong
i canât tell the difference between a mistake thatâs part of the learning process and a mistake where i should know better
but yeah, if we ever acknowledge any of this, weâre definitely just being ungrateful whiners who donât realize how good we had it when we were 7
I have a physical need to know if there's any more than just this.
My sides, they hurt.
Explaining Vikings And Other Barbaric Badasses
Now Iâm a huge fan of the show Vikings, and my heritage comes from all over the world including that particular line. But my mother repeatedly expressed her pride on 3 of her ancestors, Native Americanâs, Germans, and the fuck mothering Vikings. It got me thinking⌠How the hell would we politely inform an alien that our past ancestors not only excelled at torture and bloodshed, but some cultures like Vikings took it to an unbelievable level. I imagine it would go something like so: âââââââââââââââââââââââââ âHuman-Erica, I have a question regarding something we had discussed in our,â Grekâlaz cleared his throat and moved one of his elongated arms to cover his mouth, a human like movement he had adopted while attempted to gather his thoughts upon speaking to one of the six humans aboard their ship. âOur um,â he tried to find the right words to discuss what he had learned, âOur Human Cultural Class. It was a brief history detailing the predatory and hearty nature of humans.â Erica brushed her hair behind her ear, raising a brow curiously. Grekâlaz among many other species had often come to her and the other humans with questions regarding their Death World up bringing, it was rather fun seeing them learn something new about their species. âGrek you can ask anything, I told you all before. Whatâd you learn today?â Grekâlaz pointed to above Ericaâs bed with two of his tendril like fingers. The tall alien creature easily dwarfed the human before him, but the stories they had heard made him instinctively hunch forward, a method his species used to appear non-hostile. It didnât help the humans had told him the smaller of their species could be the more violently inclined, a claim he hadnât yet learned was a joke or serious.  Where he pointed at, there lay a blade behind some ancient and primitive symbol. The blade had strange yet simply carvings, and was rusted by the thousands of years it had been handled by the family. âThat weapon, the⌠You claimed it was a sword, if my words are correct. We learned those symbols belonged to a tribe of warrior humans from you pre-technological era. Called âVi-kin-gsâ,â he slowly pulled the words out as he expressed it with the upmost respect. Erica kept her brow raised and nodded slowly, âYes, and?â she encouraged him to continue.Â
âWe heard that these⌠Vikings⌠Were some of the most concerning warriors of their time? But that they⌠Revealed in battle? Craved it even?â He asked with hope that it was not true. He knew humans were seen as a military force not to be trifled with, but the ones he had known were peaceful, to think there use to be a clan that craved nothing more than battle was, to him, terrifying.Â
Erica merely nodded, âYep, my ancestors were Norse, or viking as they were called as well. They were some crazy bastards, the old beliefs they held said that to enter the highest of the heavens with honor meant you had to die bravely in battle. Only true warriors did. This lead them to be pretty creative, to say the least, in areas of hurting.â Grekâlaz gulped, rubbing the back of its neck nervously, âI⌠I do not understand?â He questioned. He was morbidly curious. Though part of him did not wish to know.Â
âThe Blood Eagle, was something one of my ancestors went through if you want to believe the old tale.âÂ
âB-Blood Eagle?â He gulped again, âThat sounds terrifying alone, dare I ask what it was?âÂ
âDo you dare?â She smirked, showing off the dense and wicked teeth all humans possessed. He nodded, much to his own dismay. âIt was a fascinating process, though admittedly brutal beyond all standards. One of my ancestors had made a grave offense and attempted to steal the land of a Jarl, a ruler of such, and this Jarl was brothers to the King of all the land. My ancestor was punished with the Blood Eagle. It was said if you could take the pain without wincing, you would enter the heavens called Valhalla. But if you winced or cried out, you be damned.â She cleared her throat, hoping to spare Grek some of the details. The Elorians were more pacifist than most species. âThey started by cutting your back open with a knife,â she could already see him flinch and look more and more nervous. âThey then break open the back of the ribs, sometimes hammering them open. Then finally they pull the lungs out and rest them on your shoulders to look like the folded wings of an eagle.â Grekâlaz looked as though he was about to vomit, just imaging the process made him sick. âYour ancestor ⌠I weep for the torture, he mustâve been in such pain.âÂ
âWho knows? Stories say he never even made a sound, other then to scream to the Gods they believed in that he was coming very soon.â She chuckled softly. This was funny to her? Grek was truly terrified.
âYour world truly faced a monster, no offense, Human-Erica.â Grek gulped again in a panic.Â
âOh those were just the Vikings, humans all over the world were doing stuff on that level.âÂ
âTHEY WHAT?!? YOUâRE KIND ACTIVELY TRIED TO FIND MORE CREATIVE METHODS OF INJURING AND HURTING EACH OTHER?â
âOh Grek ⌠I really hope they tell you about the Spanish Inquisition,â Erica laughed before patting his side, for his shoulder was at least 2 feet higher than her. âIâm heading to the mess hall, join me if you want,â she nodded before making her way out.Â
âI believe⌠I have lost my appetite,â he grumbled quietly. Humans⌠They were terrifying because they remembered these practices, whose to say they didnât plan to use them if their enemies deserved it?
