Bleach may be a clownfiesta but something that stuck with me was Kaien’s teaching about how it is important to live with kindness and joy towards others. Even though our bodies inevitably die and decompose, if many people remember you fondly then your spirit stays alive through them. I think this is a very comforting and humbling way to think about our mortality. Instead of wishing to live many years (which is out of my control), I’d like to try and live with a big heart instead (which I can do!). A few years with great happiness and many fun memories to be remembered by is better than a hundred years spent lonely and forgotten. Thanks Tite Kubo, for the wisdom.

Kubo stopped there. So we don’t explicitly know exactly WHY he had wanted to save her so much. And I believe, we all have our own interpretations of why Ichigo felt that way, and this is mine.

It was always stressed that young Ichigo loved his mother a lot, and that he wanted to be able to protect her. As seen above, he attached his mother to that “one thing” he has to protect. Because she had always protected him. Up until the moment she died, she died protecting him.

But Ichigo never got to protect her back. I think we all knew how much Ichigo regretted that. So since then, Ichigo had took it upon himself to keep others from harm.

Up until Rukia came.

She protected him again, and again, and again.

And not to mention how Rukia was the one who gave him the power to protect the people he cared for.

He finally got protected by someone again.

Which was what compelled him to protect Rukia. It wasn’t just because she was his nakama.

It was also because he doesn’t want to make the same mistake twice, because she was the second person who truly saved him, because Rukia has become the new “one thing” he has to protect.

And when he did, he finally forgave himself. Thus, the rain stopped falling.
