Counterfeit World (2011) by Kunon
The air here is stagnant and still; the climate humid, and damp-seeming. Was this the climate only for this particular season? One would hope so; how else could anyone bare to thrive under such unbearable accommodations? The ex-general lifts her arm to her forehead, to wipe away a bit of sweat that had accumulated upon her brow; she and Locke were actually quite lucky that they had fallen together, and yet remain in one piece. Despite her somewhat sluggish state, given the unbearable heat from this place, she was fine.
âNo one?â She questions, yet is hardly surprised. Perhaps the people before them left due to the climate â but this raises another question: why establish an entire town here? Celes seriously doubted that the houses, roads, and shops had once been apart of another continent before Kefkas reign on the land. A brow arches, with Lockes next words. The lumber used to build these homes were, indeed, new.Â
ââHm,â she stands up from that kneeling position, to make eye contact with Locke. âWe should set up camp for now,â there wasnât much use in sitting and wondering about where the past inhabitants of this mysterious town had gotten off to. Not when Locke and herself still needed to find a way off of the island, to meet up with the rest of their party, who, hopefully, were still alive, as well. âWe.. should look for some decent lumber and rope tomorrow, to construct a raft of some sort.â A raft; that was how her journey began anew, thanks to her late, non-biological grandfather.
Her lingering thoughts, however, are literally shaken when the ground trembles. Icy blue eyes instinctively gaze out of the window, to investigate what might be the cause, when a loud, screech is heard. The sound is unlike any Celes has ever heard before; it sounded like an animal, but unlike any sort she has ever laid eyes on.
Her hands grip the hilt of her sword out of instinct, as her attention is, once again, drawn back to Locke. For some reason, she is reminded of their first meeting, and how they escaped the town of Figaro together. It is never a dull moment, with the two of them, it seems. She would have to reflect on those fond memories another time, however, as the trembling of the ground only grows more violent. Could this be some sort of earthquake? Or the foot steps of a giant beast?
Either way, one could conclude that they werenât alone, after all.
Locke curses under his breath. Could he enjoy a single peaceful moment in this new world with Celesâ or anyone, for that matterâ without something trying to eat him? Taking a few cautious steps toward the window, he squints into the inky twilight. Another call echoes in the distance. This time, itâs loud enough to rattle the windows.
âWhatever it is, itâs big,â Locke remarks. Of course, Celes would know that, but he ran his mouth anyway, almost in hopes of hearing her reply, âI know what it is, and itâs not a big deal.â
But the ground is shaking, and birds are suddenly taking flight from the edge of the forest, disturbed from their nests. âThe buildings are still standing⌠so it canât be anything that can reach in and grab us⌠right?â
He knows sheâs not going to sit and wait for an answer. With a heavy sigh, he pulls his knives. âLooks like itâs cominâ in from the east. If I head north ânâ you head south, we can come in a pincer attack, maybe catch it off-guard.â
Though, even the prospect of splitting up is more frightening now. Nobody knew better than the two of them that every time they say goodbye, it might be for the last. Locke isnât so much afraid of death as heâs afraid of separation.
For a moment, he hesitatesâ wondering if Celes will agree to his plan or ask him, in so many words, to stay with her.
With the turning of her head, she gazes at him over her shoulder. The hilt of her sword succumbs to her icy grasp; the ice that is embedded in her veins begins to flow rapidly, as it usually did, during the calm before a storm. Finger tips fan out, and tap gently against the hilt, as she nods to him. Lockes words are correct, indeed; whatever this monstrosity is -- it is big. Could it have been bigger than anything she has faced before? Perhaps. However, Locke seems more confident that he knows what this monstrosity is. Has he faced it before? Celes can only wonder. âIâm not so sure--â her free hand moves a lock of hair from her eyes, as she turns her gaze out of the window. There were many fearsome, undiscovered beasts, that had been mutated, and awoken by the distortion of their world. However, Celes has yet to find any that can simply reach into a home, such as this, and grab them out of it.
â--But I donât think we should wait around to find out, either.â Sitting and waiting wouldnât be a good idea, at all. However, his suggestion to split up, is not a bad one. A pincer attack, in theory, could work in their favor, depending on how big, and strong this beast actually is. It would be much easier to do so, if they had more allies on their side to flank the enemy. Alas, the odds are never in their favor. âI think..â she starts slowly, almost as if she is wondering herself what their best move would be.
Even during her time as a general, Celes would take battle strategy into great consideration; lives were at steak, and it was up to her whether the many would be saved, or if they would parish, under her command. This time, sacrifice is not an option, especially since means Lockes life, or her own. âI donât think we should split up--â Could Locke handle facing the beast on his own?
No -- she does not view him helpless, however, despite how crafty he is, he is not like her. He isnât a trained knight -- or -- weapon -- as she has come to be.
âThere could be more than one.. and I.. do not want to take that chance.â The chance that his life could be forfeit. âWhy donât we both go south -- we may be able to form some sort of.. preemptive strike.â Perhaps that would be safer. There is safety in numbers; and with Locke by her side, Celes feels as if she can do almost anything. âLets get going.â Never being one to waste time, she peers out of the crack of the door, first and foremost, to make sure the beast had not gotten a leg up on them, with curious, prying eyes, as it invades the village.
Luckily, there is no such thing, as far as she can see.
With lithe footsteps, she passes over the threshold, and moves to duck behind the stone gate on the houses perimeter. The rumbling of footsteps is better felt out here; it is as if the earth is reopening beneath her feet, this time. Out of the corner of her eye, she glances to Locke. The coolness of ice in her veins awaits her command; her most cherished weapon; the magicite she has been infused with.
âItâs coming closer. Are you ready?â
Send me ⥠for my character's reaction to yours climbing into bed with mine.
the angst prompts that no one ever wanted
I sold my soul to bring you back to life after your untimely death and I only have a month left with you so  Iâm trying to make it count.
Youâre a ghost whoâs trying to get to the afterlife so Iâm helping you out but I fell in love and now I donât want you to go but itâs too late.
You keep having strange dreams that turn out to be us in a past life and youâre determined to find me again but in this life Iâm already dead.
Iâm a firefighter and you live near the station I work at and we talk/flirt with each other a lot. One day me and my team get called to put out a fire and itâs your home ablaze. You donât make it out.
We live in a futuristic era where youâre a scientist and Iâm your assistant. An experiment goes horribly wrong resulting in my death. You try to put my brain in a robot and it works but itâs not the same. Â
Iâm your guardian angel whoâs been breaking the rules and keeping you alive longer than you should be and as punishment I have to watch you die.
Youâre a civilian and Iâm a knight. We fall in love and are the cutesy couple ever. An enemy kingdom attacks our kingdom and in the heat of a battle youâre kidnapped (or killed) right in front of me while Iâm unable to do anything about it.
Iâm in a gang and youâre too precious for this world but you still hang out with me. One day my gang activity gets you hurt so I completely cut off all ties to keep you safe.
Iâm a vampire that has a moment of weakness when youâre nearby and it doesnât end well.
Youâre secretly a spy and to keep me safe when things go downhill you have to break up with me and you do it as harshly as possible so I donât try and follow you (optional: I do follow and your worst fear comes true).
You would always randomly pull me up to dance or just gently hold me while swaying but now Iâm standing here alone (up to you why they are alone).
You loved him like a mouthful of whiskey. He numbed your lips as well as your heart.

TRUTH SERUM - MY MUSE HAS TO ANSWER ANY AND ALL QUESTION REGARDLESS OF WHAT IT IS.
Please preface questions with âTruthâ
There is a poem in my veins knocking on the walls and trying to get out, my heavy heart is filled with doubt, that muscle will always remember the pain. âIf there is no reason to write, then why even bother?â, but there is a reason so loud, I canât smother the sound of the pulsing poem running through my body. This time I wonât hold my breath, this time I will make sure I wonât forget, that there are poems in my veins that there is a cure for all this pain and that I wonât hide anymore, even if fear will knock on my door, again, I wonât hide anymore, I wonât hide anymore.
August Poetry (via wnq-writers)
Lips form a thin line, as icy blues narrow in disapproval. There is naught but silence, as she pays close attention to the way he moves; he is casual, and unlike herself, seems to be in high spirits. Just what could he be so proud of, she dares to wonder. A hand finds its way to her chin, as he contents of the bag is lain out before her. Fruit, meat, and potions are of dyer importance, as they will need to eat, and recover quickly if they find themselves in a pinch â which was highly likely, given how dangerous the wilds have become. With his lifting of the old chair, however, she takes mental note of the delight he finds in having smashed it into smaller pieces.
Traveling with Locke is much more simple, than traveling with a less experienced journeyman. He does not need to be reminded not to snuff out the flame by putting too much firewood upon it, nor does he need to be told how to scavenge. With a short sigh, she kneels down by the camp fire, to relax.
âIt seems weâre the only people here,â this place is abandoned; there is no sign of any recent, or current inhabitants, despite there being what appears to be an entrance to a mine on the far side of town. Strangely enough, Celes never knew this town existed, nor has she ever heard of another town, apart from Narshe, that had a mine within the town limits. Have they really been ship-wrecked so far away from their homeland?
Her hand plants itself on the ground beside her for stability, as she shifts from kneeling to actually sitting on the ground. The silence surrounding them is only interrupted by the ambiance of chirping insects, and the occasional bat, which hunts said insects.
Eventually he was sure that Celes would figure out his cheerfulness was a facade. At least, some part of it. He found comfort in the fact that, having been shot out of the damn sky a second time, he at least managed to land with someone else. He still had nightmares about the day the world fell, of Celes slipping from his fingers, disappearing to points unknown. Sometimes he couldnât tell who was fallingâ she or Rachel.
This time he held tighter, and they were both stronger, somehow. Kefka had engineered this world to break them, but it had only toughened their bodies and their resolve.
He was not alone, not now. And so he did his best to smile.
Especially because Celes was not as talkative as he, and it was sometimes difficult not to be unnerved by her taciturn nature.
Looking up at the sky, Locke surmised that they were some distance north of the equator. The clouds made it difficult to tell, but they were thinner here. Nowhere near Kefkaâs tower, then. Good.
âYeah⌠I didnât find nobody else,â Locke replied. Nobody but corpses, anyway. âThis settlement seems pretty new. Nowhere I visited before the Cataclysm. Mustâve been a plucky bunch, tryna eke out a living since the world cracked open.â The bigger question was, why was the town abandoned? Either they left on their own or were cleared out by something.
