Have you ever seen this #animal before? It’s called a #pangolin. Pangolins are medium-sized, scale-covered, insect-eating mammals that live in several areas of Africa and Asia. This little known but amazing creature is #endangered. According to @ifawhq, “pangolins are the most illegally trafficked mammal in the world. Over 1 million pangolins are estimated to have been poached in the last decade in order to satisfy demand for their meat and scales.” @ifawhq have a petition going at the moment to help protect these unique animals. France becomes first major nation to ratify UN climate deal

President François Hollande calls on other European countries to follow France’s lead by the end of the year

President François Hollande on Wednesday finalised ratification of the Paris climate accord reached in December 2015, making France the first industrialised country to do so.

“Signing is good, ratifying is better,” Hollande quipped at the Élysée Palace ceremony, flanked by environment minister Ségolène Royal, foreign minister Jean-Marc Ayrault and other top officials.

He noted that the deal will not come into force unless at least 55 countries responsible for at least 55% of global greenhouse gas emissions ratify it. So far 17 states – mainly small island and low-lying coastal countries that are especially vulnerable to the sea-level rise – have ratified the deal.

The global climate is undergoing

The global climate is undergoing “fundamental change” with abnormal weather conditions becoming the “new normal”, the United Nations warned on Tuesday, as the month of May was declared the hottest on record. 

“The state of the climate so far this year gives us much cause for alarm,” said Dr David Carlson, the director of the Climate Research Programme at the WMO. “The super El Niño is only partly to blame. Abnormal is the new normal.”

Mr Carlson added: “The rapid changes in the Arctic are of particular concern. What happens in the Arctic affects the rest of the globe. The question is will the rate of change continue? Will it accelerate? We are in uncharted territory.”

U.S. Chamber of Commerce joins anti-solar crusade

The chamber’s new campaign is part of a larger right-wing push to kneecap the rooftop solar industry.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the latest conservative group to start spreading anti-solar messages. In an email sent to supporters on Wednesday, the chamber attacks net metering, a policy in place in many states that pays people with solar panels on their roofs for the electricity they feed into the grid. The group also posted a video on YouTube last week making its anti-net metering case. This is fairly new territory for the chamber, according to energy regulation experts.

Last week’s extreme flooding in Europe was historic. It submerged cities, displaced tens of thousands of residents, and killed 19 people. Even the famed Louvre museum in Paris had to close. Floodwaters have receded, but extreme weather events are on the rise and severe flooding is projected to increase across the continent in the coming decades.

Donald Trump once backed urgent climate action. Wait, what?

Well, this is confusing.. 

In every conceivable way, the letter contradicts Trump’s current stance on climate policy. On the campaign trail, Trump has said he is “not a big believer in man-made climate change.” Last fall, after Obama described climate change as a major threat to the United States and the world, Trump said that was “one of the dumbest statements I’ve ever heard in politics — in the history of politics as I know it.”

The 2009 ad also argues that a shift to clean energy “will spur economic growth” and “create new energy jobs.” But these days, Trump contends that U.S. action to limit greenhouse gas emissions would put the country at a competitive disadvantage. In 2012, he went so far as to claim: “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.”

Here's what the science really says about Fort McMurray and climate change

A few days ago Mike Flannigan travelled to Fort McMurray as part a special scientific research team studying the raging wildfire.

Mike Flannigan, a professor of wildland fire from the University of Alberta, and many other climate change scientists agree that while the Fort McMurray fires cannot be directly linked to the carbon pollution produced by humans, Canadian wildfire activity of the past few years is well above average. And it’s connected to the warming climate.

In terms of the total areas destroyed by fires, there’s an unmistakable escalation, they say. They see these fires as vivid markers of dangers to come for the forests and for the people and wildlife that live in them and around them.

As temperatures warm, they say, the likelihood is greater that more out of control infernos will consume more trees and human infrastructure.
