It may seem like #ecoliving basics but it's amazing how it's nowhere near the norm yet. Working a bulk food store, I'm surprised by how many people still ask for a plastic carry bag for their purchases. Think ahead and you'll reduce your plastic bag consumption incredibly! So far this year I've accepted 1 plastic bag. The average American supposedly uses 500 per year. #saynotoplastic #reusables #ecotip

This #fact is why no-one will ever be able to be truly #zerowaste until perhaps, as a planet, we embrace a #circulareconomy. In Annie Leonard's @storyofstuff book she mentions just a few products or raw materials and how much waste is created by producing or extracting them. For me it was gobsmacking and would highly recommend her book to anyone interested in how the current economy and our #wasteproblem are deeply intertwined. Here are just 2 quotes that really surprised me: • "Mining enough gold for an average gold wedding ring creates about 20 tons of hazardous mining waste" • "Making one aluminium can takes energy equivalent to one-quarter of the can's volume in gasoline" As @annie_leonard then goes on to say: "I've developed the habit of asking myself: Is all the effort to extract ingredients for and produce this thing, combined with my hours of work to pay for it, worth it?" I make sure to ask myself this now as well. I took this a few years ago on a day trip from Tofino, #Canada. This was the path to get to some hot springs. I can't remember the name of them anymore unfortunately. The scenery was just idyllic. God, I love #nature. Have you ever seen this #animal before? It’s called a #pangolin. Pangolins are medium-sized, scale-covered, insect-eating mammals that live in several areas of Africa and Asia. This little known but amazing creature is #endangered. According to @ifawhq, “pangolins are the most illegally trafficked mammal in the world. Over 1 million pangolins are estimated to have been poached in the last decade in order to satisfy demand for their meat and scales.” @ifawhq have a petition going at the moment to help protect these unique animals. Esta poco conocida pero maravillosa criatura está en #peligrodeextinción. De acuerdo con lo que dice @ifawhq , “los pangolines son los mamíferos más ilegalmente traficados en el mundo. Se estima que más de 1 millón de pangolines han sido cazados en la última década, para satisfacer la demanda por su piel y escamas.” @ifawhq está llevando a cabo una petición para ayudar a proteger estos animales peculiares. I must admit I have yet to adopt this personally, but plan to ASAP! @rocket_science does though and recommends it. 😊 In Mexico we got our laundry done, but here in Oz I have the chance to start. Which I’m super excited about, especially after reading these stats in a @treehuggerdotcom article, “a horrifying 1 billion laundry jugs are discarded in the United States annually. Once empty, only an estimated 30% of these high-density polyethylene (HDPE) jugs are recycled. The remaining 70% ends up in landfills, or clogs oceans and waterways”. Dedo de admitir que aún tengo que adoptar esto personalemente, pero planeo hacerlo de inmediato! @rocket_science lo hace y lo recomienda. 😊 En México llevaba mi ropa a la lavandería, pero aquí en Australia, tendré la oportunidad de comenzar. Por lo que estoy super emocionada, especialmente después de leer estas estadísticas en un artículo de @treehuggerdotcom , “la espantosa cantidad de 1 billón de envases de detergente son desechados en los Estados Unidos, anualmente. Una vez que están vacíos, sólo un estimado del 30% de estas jarras de polietileno de alta densidad son recicladas. El 70% restante, termina en los basureros, en los océanos o corrientes de agua”. I’m sorting through my things here in Oz and #simplifying a lot! It’s fabulous in general but unfortunately lots of things need to go in the bin. I was surprised and frustrated to find out that #photos can’t be recycled because of the chemicals used in the printing and the chemical coating on older photographs. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can #ecoconsciously dispose of my old photos? - Georgia 🙏🏼🌏♻️ PS. I'm using a great app at the moment to scan all my old photos, it's called @photomyne. I'm then saving them to my @dropbox so that I will always have these precious photos on record somewhere - just not taking up physical space in my life. :) #recycle #reuse #minimise #minimalist ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Estoy revisando y ordenando mis cosas aquí en Australia y estoy #simplificando mucho! En general es fabuloso, pero desafortunadamente muchas cosas necesitan irse a la basura.
