The Mirror of Race is an online photo exhibition which functions as a quiz. A historical and moral quiz. Because who are the people we see on these fascinating old daguerreotypes? Answering these questions for ourselves, and then reading both the factual and interpretative explanations provided by the curators, confronts us with our prejudices and expectations concerning race in the United States – and by extension everywhere else. There are so many insights still to be attained by the simple effect of slow motion. Take this short BBC demonstration of a hawk, in a studio setting, flying through increasingly small holes in a wall. It's called 'Snowfalling', after The New York Times' genre-defining online publication Snowfall in 2012: adding video and audio, infographics and smooth navigation to long written articles – typically examples of slow journalism. The word 'snowfall' happens to be particularly suited for this slightly lesser known, but beautiful example, Out in the Great Alone, an article on the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, published online by American sports channel ESPN. This 1905 film of the New York Subway almost looks like an art experiment in light and shadow. Riding just behind a subway train, we see it entering a station and passing through dark tunnels. The effect is hypnotic. Via Laughing Squid.
Slums usually consist of sprawling areas of one-room shanties at the edge of cities. Caracas' Tower of David however, is an unfinished highrise-turned-slum, right in the middle of town. 45 stories high and containing 2,500 residents but no elevators, the squatted Tower is portrayed as a relatively safe community in this short, slightly sensationalist documentary by Vocativ, a Global Social Network which was started in 2013 with news editors, writers and producers from the New York Times, CNN and Reuters.
How to capture time in still photography? Singapore based Fong Qi Wei has the solution: he cuts and edits photos of the same spot at different moments of the day and thus captures the passage of time, from day to night. Stilistically, the effect reminds us of '20s modern art. Via This is Colossal.

It's the little house in the lower right corner, with the top of a hill just visible, which makes these photographs of changing weather conditions by Italian photographer Manuel Cosentino so fascinating. In communist pre-1989 Romania, if you were lucky and brave enough to own a VCR recorder, you could watch black market Hollywood movies. The dubbing voice was always the same, a 'husky, high-pitched woman’s voice'. Later, Romanian documentary filmmaker Ilinca Calugareanu found out who this woman was, and made this lovely short documentary about Irina Margareta Nistor, the voice of 3,000 movies, for The New York Times.
A unique reverse POV shot of a pelican, learning how to fly. The GoPro camera, attached to its beak and directed at its face, doesn't seem to bother the animal. At least, as far as this GoPro commercial shows. For the viewer, however, it's a bit disconcerting. Via LaughingSquid.
