Classical Piece of the Day - day 15

George Gershwin's An American in Paris

It is my half birthday today (it's complicated) and so I thought I'd choose one of the pieces that got me to fall in love with classical music. I played woodblock in this at the ripe old age of 14, and while I then couldn't count to save my life, I adored it.

It was written based on Gershwin's time in Paris during the Années folles (the Roaring 20s), and parts of it are wonderfully evocative of the atmosphere (baby Lenny was VERY jealous of the percussionist who got to play the taxi horns).

Recently I played the violin at a primary school and gave a talk about the instrument, its history and its construction. A teacher after this concert approached me and asked whether she could donate her hair to my bow after my colleague had spent 5 minutes explaining to the audience that the bow hair is from the horse's tail. She was completely serious.

we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
