Leonora Carrington The Giantess (The Guardian of the Egg) 1947
me: im so sleepy at work today ive barely done anything
my to-do list for today: nearly complete
i am always one wrong word away from being shot by all the people who find me tolerable
You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense 😭
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have
If you were taught to read with the three cueing method, and now struggle to read fluently, you can still learn to read properly!

If you're a teenager, you can still use this resource.

got tagged by @sherbertilluminated to answer some fun questions:
last song: "Everything Went Numb" by Streetlight Manifesto
last movie/tv show: Project Hail Mary (after much peer pressure from @agaricandmoss and also coworkers). it was really good! im quite fond of ryan gosling and also puppetry, so it was a good time
favorite color: the exact shade of yellow that "sunflower" risograph ink is
currently watching: i'm in between shows right now, but i'm thinking of starting Widow's Bay
currently reading: i just finished "The Sinners All Bow" by Kate Winkler Dawson (nonfiction that's about a Providence-based writer in the 1830s and her investigation of a murder that happened up in Fall River at the time-- really interesting local history i had no idea about!) & next up is Absolution by Jeff VanderMeer
current game: i'm back to trying to 100% Katamari Damacy
current obsession: the Dragon Age ttrpg i'm in that's starting to wrap up that has spanned the years 9:33-9:40 Dragon (and 3 years of real time), and once we finish this campaign, we're going to be picking up the next one at the same point in time in-universe with new characters we've been creating. i love my current player character, johanna, but i think the gm is steering her toward a satisfying narrative conclusion, and i'm really excited about my next character august.
currently working on: an as-of-now 16-page illustrated zine showing every object listed in Daniel Brown's 1785 estate inventory submitted to the Middlesex County probate court.
coffee or tea: both!
last thing i ate: i haven't eaten today because my stomach is being fussy, but last night i had carbonara flavored balduk noodles (these facts may be related).
last place i went: psychiatrist appointment to get my meds refilled
last internet search: "nina mae mckinney hallelujah 1929" looking for reference images of her dress for an art fight attack.
i'm going to tag @agaricandmoss , @bojanus , and @anissapierce
Ok like. Imagine life without ads. You wake up, check your messages across a variety of apps, no ads. You get up and put on the tv while you prep your breakfast, no ads. Maybe you drive somewhere and switch on the radio, no ads. Maybe you drive a long distance, yet somehow, not a single billboard on your path. You pick up a newspaper or magazine to pass the time, no advertisements only articles. You turn on your game console, the home screen is just about your games, no ads to buy more. You open a streaming app, you don't pay extra for no ads, there's just no ads ever.
Think about how much of your time is spent looking at ads. "Download ublock" yeah I know, I have. But that doesn't change that the world is covered with endless advertising. Imagine never seeing that again. How much better our lives would be.

Once I "made" a custom emoji for my mum by crudely drawing a hijab on it and now whenever she wants me to buy a coffee for her I get a text like this

I love asking people how their parents met. You always get an interesting reply. My best friend’s parents met on the relatively new internet in 1999. My other friend’s parents met at Burger King when one was the manager and the other was a regular customer. My parents met at the beach because they were neighbors in their rental houses, mom was on a church trip and dad was getting blackout drunk every night with his friends next door.
Tell me how your parents met in the tags.
idk i would personally rather give up access to certain products seasonally or locally than have people enslaved to give me the ability to have any product any place any time. i think i can go without tomatoes in january.
i truly do think that most people if confronted with it and pressed on it would agree. but it's comfortable to gain privileges from someone else's suffering, especially if you don't have to see that suffering directly.
what is THE worst thing you've ever drank. all liquids acceptable. please tell me what it was, bonus points for why
