in wills acceptance flashbacks mike was in it, mike was majority of it. if that wasn’t significant they wouldn’t have put it in.

secondly, will is an entirely unreliable narrator. the duffers themselves said that in the scene where i’m assuming will came up with the thought that mike was his tammy, mike wasn’t uncomfortable. he just didn’t understand what will was doing.

third, there is 100% some significance to mike being the one to walk in and interrupt will coming out to joyce and it wasn’t just so will would realize he needed to come out to everyone.

fourth, there’s also 100% significance behind the face mike made when will mentioned he liked one of his friends. that wasn’t a face of understanding or realization, that was a face of disappointment or sadness. he may’ve thought will was talking about lucas or (probably not) dustin or some dude in lenora.

and last but not least, the painting still hasn’t been addressed. mike and el more than likely aren’t together but the painting still hasn’t been resolved. that will be the tipping point for mike, that will be what solidifies byler happening in the last episode.
