God it was kinda baller as hell for the raimi trilogy to write Norman Osborn as essentially a distilled idea of harmful and toxic masculinity, make him creep on and threaten to sexually assault an 18 year old girl… then kill him by having him use his own glider to stab himself in the dick/allegorically castrate himself.
So during the Thanksgiving scene Norman is shown to ogle MJ. He specifically does so when his son is not looking and MJ is clearly uncomfortable with it. She also specifically calls him a creep, which makes it clear that the implication of the scene was meant to be sexual. This is not what I’m talking about, but it is important context.
During the final scene where Peter and the goblin fight for the last time, Norman specifically says, “Had you not been so selfish, your little girlfriend’s death would have been quick and painless. Now that you’ve really pissed me off, I’m gonna finish her nice and slow. MJ and I, we’re gonna have a hell of a time.” If the implication was meant to be solely that he was going to kill her, I can’t see this line being written this way. MJ’s death, should he have let her die on the bridge, still would have been violent and painful. The implication here is that he’s going to something worse. The wording here is also worth considering: while “nice and slow” and “a hell of a time” aren’t necessarily sexually explicit, when you both combine this with Norman’s already present unwelcome sexual behavior towards MJ and take into consideration this is a movie that needs to be acceptable for kids, that being a demographic they need to make money off of, this essentially reads like a rape threat that’s subtle enough to be played to ten year olds. You could say that he only meant he was going to torture her, sure, but the specific wording does carry a connotation, and not one that would just inevitably be there regardless of how the line was written.
This is also the point where a very beaten down and defeated Peter begins actually fighting back. But not only has Norman already threatened violence towards MJ, he’s also specifically threatened MJ with death in a very tangible and immediate way already with the whole bridge scene. So what about this specific line would be something Peter would see as worse, so much so that it upsets him enough to fight back and win? I’m not saying that it’s a super great thing for this movie to feature this specifically so Peter can be upset about it and fight back to establish his love for her, but it does feel pretty silly to deny that it’s completely characteristic for these movies to do something like this.
You also have to remember that despite the age restrictions, this movie isn’t a stranger to the idea of sexual violence. During the scene before the upside down kiss, MJ is walking down an alleyway alone at night and is accosted by a group of men who grab her and do things like catcall her and bark at her. She specifically shouts at them to get off her. The catcalls are vague enough to be suitable for that audience, but the imagery here is clearly that of sexual assault, so it’s not like you could shield what Norman is saying by saying it’s unthinkable for these movies to feature like that. He’s saying he’s going to rape her, they just articulated it in a way that they could get away with.

Brief review of DOSHENTA (aka one of the only three dw comics featuring skip haverty)
Some spoilers ahead!
The official synopsis:
Warned about a troop of aliens who seek to catalog all species and extinguish those who don't fit into the taxonomy, the Eight Doctor lands on the planet Ipperin IV to try and find his friend and protect her from this great evil. He, however, arrives a little too early.
Doshenta shows a teenage Skip, six years prior to meeting the doctor, in the midst of an identity crisis and general insecurity about her body and herself. The doctor sticks around Skip and tries to hide the looming threat to her existence from her, while fighting the.. (*sighs in exhaustion*) the Glorbies (late referred in the comic as the Blorbies ? for some reason?). These are the aliens obsessed with taxonomy, lovers of a neat and tidy spreadsheet of alien species, haters of every individual who doesn't fit into the neat and tidy spreadsheet. A little heavy handed right?
Doshenta shows the prospect of diving really deep into Skip's insecurities about her hybridism, gender and sexuality, as well as social and political aspects of the human's and doshenta's coexisting on Ipperin IV, themes that are already hinted in her early audios. I'd say for the first half of the comic, it does a very good job of exploring those themes. The art is beautiful, the dialogue is good, the plot is compelling.
And then in the second half..... I don't know what the fuck happened there. Progressively it seemed like everyone on the team lost its passion for the project, the illustrations start to become lazy and unflattering, the story gets increasingly more confusing, and DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE FUCKING GLORBIES. A classic Doctor Who tradition of ruining perfectly alright aliens or villains.
But ignoring the Glorbies and the general ending for a bit, Doshenta is a really good start if you like Skip Haverty and want to know more about her context and backstory, her familial issues and relationship with the people of her world. In the audios we basically only see her interacting with humans, so it's really interesting to see her with (and compared to) the doshenta people.
The doshenta species also gets a very different design on this comic story, as you might have noticed on the cover. Noticeably, they are big and resemble more a mermaid than a person per se. I'd guess it's the same issue the Doctor Who team had with choosing about Skip's design, so they just went for a bunch of different stuff.
Overall, I liked the story!! I've read very few dw comics, but I could not pass on the opportunity to see my beloved Skip illustrated. I guess I'd give it a 8/10, but only if you stop reading it halfway through lol. If I consider the entire comic, the grade lowers considerably. Just drop the story when you finish the fish ring part and you're good! You're in for a fun trip :)
Yeaah I, didn't end up finishing this one couldn't really keep up with the plot, as you said. But it was interesting how they were using The Doctor's mother is a mermaid lore, which to be honest I didn't really like. (I prefer Leela as the doctors grandmother) but it did make for some interesting parallels between Skip and the Doctor, with both of them being hybrids.
Also the Doshenta villages!!!! Gorgeous, wish we got more shots of them. I'll see if I can get up a picture of them, but it might be a bit hard since I don't have a physical copy.
oh absolutely absolutely!!! I don't know why in hell they introduced the half-mermaid-half-gallifreyan bit, I mean didn't you say the eighth doctor was half human some mere years ago??? WHAT are we doing here
but YEAH, the illustrations are gorgeous (until a certain point lol), and you can really see that someone was designing the villages and buildings and characters with thoughtfulness.
