Btw the heat *is* why we see water that's not really there, but mirages aren't exactly hallucinations so much as optical illusions:

It's just the changing density of the air refracting light weirdly, so it looks like there's a reflection of the sky on the ground, which our brains often interpret as a pool of water. It can also happen upwards instead of downwards, especially at sea, when the air is much colder near the surface and a warm front appears above it:

idk man sometimes i like it when video game writers are allowed to plan a series of events that happen in a specific order and affect each other in turn to become an overarching narrative, and i don’t mind trusting those writers to take me through those events in the order that is emotionally effective. i don’t really care if a game forces me to go through the forest area first before i can attempt the icy area because maybe there’s things that happen in the forest area that inform later scenes in the icy area. maybe we don't need more superficial player choice open world concepts if it comes at the cost of the ability to write a story with actual significant plot events and character development in each section

I get that some people don't care about story and just want to explore, but for me personally, I just don't really feel like there's much point in exploring if nothing comes of it. Like, okay, I filled out the map and collected some objects. I'm more interested in how the lives of the player character and NPCs are changed by the journey, and it's difficult to create that kind of emotional impact without some amount of linear storytelling.

I feel like also maybe people don't understand the high cost of player choice. Like sure, there could be an interesting story about what would happen if a player character did something else to what they actually do. But that's not the story that the creators wrote? If you want infinite choice, you're essentially asking the creators to write infinite stories, and that's just not realistic. If you want a lot of choice, you're either going to have a game that takes forever to develop and costs a ton, or you're just going to get a bunch of half-assed stories that don't mean anything. And that's not even considering the mechanical aspects, such as making sure enemies are balanced, gameplay progression is satisfying, player has the abilities/tools they need for the current challenges, etc. Which in an ideal world would also be chosen to complement the story for optimal story-gameplay resonance.

We have got to stop framing our oppression in ways that promote the idea that other people cannot relate to our struggles. Not only does it isolate comrades in the struggle, it actively diminishes recognition of other struggles--often including those even more horrific than what we are at risk of. And this happens especially between Gay and Black struggles.

"when have straight people ever had to check what states were safe for them?" Sundown towns are still a thing. Starlight tours. What states have abortion access? What states have open carry? What states have stand your ground? What states have 3-strike rules? Women, people of color, disabled people, immigrants, and more have had to be abundantly cautious where they travel to. Straight trans people have much more travel risk right now than gay cis people.

It's a new iteration of the same tired question: "imagine if straight people weren't allowed to marry" interracial marriage in the US is younger than my parents. We disgrace people of color by forgetting their history and contemporary struggles, and we abandon queer people of color, Black queer people, by segmenting their overlapping fights.

I love when people try to gotcha me on my stance that all sports should be gender integrated with "even American football???" because I can instantly come back with "oh lmao, no, I don't think ANYONE should play American football at all, it's way too dangerous" like nice try but I know no amount of testosterone is going to protect you from the profound, life ruining health issues caused by getting repeated severe concussions over the course of several years.
