“Good,” Lyra giggled and said, “I think sometimes I come across as too weird or something, you know?” Itching the side of her nose that had her piercing on she said, “so what you got coming up after lunch? I know you’re in my science class.” She was about to ask him more but she frowned as the bell rang “Oh shoot! Just when we were getting started!” Lyra made a pout face but then smiled.

“I really hope you can make it tomorrow Galen,” Lyra smiled as she grabbed her bag, slinging it over her shoulder, “it’s the Photo Lab, at 3:30 after school!” She waived at him as she started to walk away, “I’m glad we got to finally talk Galen!” 

He can’t help but chuckle about her saying she’s the one that comes off as weird. “I’m pretty sure between the two of us if you ask anyone else they’ll say I’m the weird one, not you.” In truth he didn’t really care what people thought about him, his focus was always more inline with his most recent interest though he was aware he sometimes ‘zoned’ out so he was sure most people thought he was a bit odd. Just as he opened his mouth to reply he heard the bell ring and his heart deflated a bit. 

“Yeah.. I’ll be there.” He could die of boredom for all he cared, no matter what he’d be there for her club. When she started to walk away he waved and turned to go off in his own direction, “me too.”

Her grin got even bigger as he grinned, she had got him talking to her! She was so excited, one of the things Lyra loved was getting to meet new people, make new friends. She reminded herself to calm down, he probably didn’t find the idea of spending the day at the beach picking up trash fun so don’t try and lure him in with that.

But when he said he may come by, Lyra jumped a bit, excited, “oh yay!” She clapped her hands and said, “oh Galen, I’m excited! We’re a small club but we are a fun one, I promise!” Lyra paused and said, “sorry I just…I get excited really easily…you know?”

He never was much of a smiler much less at school but when her grin grew so too did his and he looked down for a moment. For some time now he’d wanted to talk to her but could never figure out the best approach and now it was like a dream come true. After a moment he folded up the flyer and slipped it into his pocket before also sliding his hands into his pockets, not knowing what exactly to do with them. 

It’s obvious she’s excited and it makes him feel amazing that she’s excited that of all the people she knows he’s talking to her. “It sounds great.” He nodded even if he was sure it wasn’t his cup of tea os to speak. “It’s alright.. I get it.”

Lyra had never really spoken to Galen before, not that she wouldn’t talk to him, she pretty much talked to everyone, he just always seemed so pre-occupied with something on his mind she didn’t think that he’d appreciate being interrupted. So when he acknowledge her, she grinned and sat up a bit straighter, “I’m okay, bit bored but I volunteered for this so, gotta serve my time.” She joked, grinning she said, “oh wait, here!” Lyra leaned over the table and held out a flyer.

“If you are interested I am the president of the Environmental Club!” Lyra explained and said, “we meet on Thursdays in the photo lab and we talk about current events, climate change, ways we can help the environment.” She giggled and said, “I know it sounds WAY boring probably BUT if you ever want to check it out we’d love to have you!”

He stood there a tad awkwardly not all too well versed in social situations much less ones where people actually wanted to speak to him. Most often he tended to be the odd man out, it didn’t help that he’d essentially disappear from the world when he was deep in thought. The joke goes over his head for a moment until it dawns on him and he chuckles lightly. When she grinned he couldn’t resist grinning as well, her grin was stunning and encased a world of happiness. When she held out the flyer he took it an quickly his eyes scanned it. 

Though he wasn’t interested in the environmental club considering he was sure there was little talk there about his own interest he was in fact interested in Lyra. That interest was leading him to his next few words. “I’ll have to come by.. sounds.. interesting.” Vastly different to what he normally considered interesting but she had invited hm and he would go.

Lyra sighed, moving to make herself a drink, she knew he wouldn’t understand, or couldn’t. She didn’t know anymore and honestly she didn’t care. This hurt. She just didn’t know what to do. “Fine, you love your girls.” 

Galen watched her and while he did he absentmindedly undid the top of his uniform. He wasn’t sure what more to say, thinking he’d made his point. ‘Good...”

     It was extraordinarily infrequent for Kay to receive any sort of thanks. Usually it was the occasional mutter from Cassian. But from any other being, it was rare. This one meant something. It was special. It was genuine. 

     “You are welcome.” It was the least the droid could do. He believed in second chances, oddly enough. Kaytoo certainly did not seem to be the type that would. The bot felt that this man deserved one. 

     “We all deserve a shot at redemption.”

“Redemption.” He repeats the word almost under his breath as he stares at the closed door that on the other side he is sure is full of hostility from the people that were meant to judge him. 

His gaze falls onto the droid with a sadness in his eyes. “I fear there is no such possibility in my life. But to be given the chance to do so I would relish.”

Her snapping causes his brow to arch and to look at her rather seriously. “I love you as I love Jyn. I am loyal to both my family and my work. Admittedly to succeed in our path I do sometimes spend too much time away but that doesn’t mean I don’t love my girls.”

     “That’d be good, because I don’t know how much time we have. Can I do anything to help?”

“There is time enough for this.. I am sure.” He mutters as he starts to work on the speeder. “Tools?”

Galen is nervous and the sentiment is etched into every line of his face and deep within his eyes as he pulls her into a protective embrace. “They will not take you, I will not let them.”

“Not trust me? Papa, they have you and you’re the smartest man I know. and I’m just a little girl, so you say. Remember? why wouldn’t they stop trusting a little girl?’ But of course Jyn didn’t understand fully what the Empire could do, especially to people like herself or her father. She had heard terrible things, yes, but she had never seen them. Unfortunately this just might have to change very soon. “I wish Mother could come with us…” She said before burying her face in his shirt, trying not to remember.

Her questions caused that familiar pang of worry to his gut not knowing how to explain this to her, she was just a child and one that did not yet understand the power of the Empire. “Not everyone is so level headed as Papa, some people wish for you to only believe what they believe in. If you go with Papa you must not speak out against what they say, agreed?” Still he did not want her to go but considering her pleading and her having seen what had happened to Lyra he didn’t want her to be scared on her own. “I know.” There was sadness to his voice, an edge of pain as he closed his eyes to collect himself.

Lyra would not have considered herself a popular girl, but she was one of those kids that got along with everyone, and in a way, that made her popular. She was a good student, a smart kid, kind to everyone who passed her way. It was club day at school and she sat at the environmental club table bored. She assumed that no one really thought picking up trash at the beach was a way people wanted to spend their free time. Hand propping up her chin, she looked around and saw Galen Erso passing by.

“Galen!” Lyra waived at him, “how are you?” 

Galen was not at all one of the popular kids, not in any sense of the word, he’d most definately be grouped into the ‘nerd’ label nor was he the most social being. He tended to keep to himself and focus more on his studied than anything else, by far he was one of the most intelligent in the school. So on club day he had intended to walk past all the tables, his attention not on what was before him but on the calculations he was running through in his head. Though when he heard his name he stopped and looked up. 

Lyra... he knew her only from seeing her around and very much so had a crush on her. Though he had not known she knew his name much less would want to speak to him. So when she waived at him he walked forward however sheepish. “Umm. I’m fine. You?”

In this moment she reminds him so much of how she was when she was a small child. ‘Enjoy them.”
