Spring means things are turning green here, and to celebrate, we have beautiful color lithographs from The Ferns of North America by Daniel Cady Eaton. Eaton was a botanist who published several works on ferns. In this preface to this work, he observes that at least 143 fern species had been identified in the United States and Canada to date, and he notes that new species were still being discovered at the time of printing.
The drawings for these plates were produced from live plants or specimens by James H. Emerton (a noted arachnologist himself) and Charles E. Faxon, a botanical artist. Eaton thanks the publisher, the lithographer, and the artists for their roles in producing the detailed illustrations:
It remains for me to return thanks to Mr. Cassino, for the care he has taken in the whole work, and especially for his constant supervision of the printing and lithography; to the artists, Mr. Emerton and Mr. Faxon, for their skilful delineations, and for the patience with which they have listened to my suggestions; and to Messrs. Armstrong and Company for the carefulness with which they have transferred the original drawings to stone.
As an added bonus, when we got this book out for a class recently, we discovered that this copy once belonged to the library of Prince Roland Bonaparte, an early anthropologist.
