Demi Lovato, AmsterDAMN 18/06/18
Scroll down for some words about Lovatics.
I feel the need to share my thoughts on the concert in Amsterdam a couple of days ago. I decided to go to that city since I have never been there and it fit better in my schedule than Cologne. I’m glad I did, because the city is beautiful.
To be honest, I felt a little too old to be queuing for the concert in the morning. In addition to that, I wanted to wait for some other girls from Germany so that we can go together. Unfortunately, they took their time even though they wanted to be in the front. So after being in front of the venue at 9 in the morning, at 11:30 I decided to queue nevertheless. It was raining and everyone was wet as fuck already. Don’t you think people would get a little annoyed by that? Maybe. But Lovatics didn’t care. There was still music, everyone was still all smiles. Talking, eating, singing. Rain ponchos were sold out in the stores, Burger King made good business. It was weird to see how a lunchtime the queue was already that long. The people I was supposed to be, still haven’t shown up and I am glad they came way too late and queued in the back of the line instead of cutting it to stay with me. I met a few amazing fans I had such a good time with.
I have been to over 250 concerts in my life, time never fly by so fast like on this day. The securities were something else as well. Even though I don’t speak Dutch, I understood a little bit of what some funny security told everybody in line to make the entrance and everything as smooth as possible. In the afternoon, no one understood how a line can be that long, I loved it.
When the doors opened, I have seen an entrance that organized and disciplined as at AFAS Live. Big fat credit to the people working there for making all this smooth.
Now, I feel like I am the wrong generation for concerts like that. Fans were holding their phones up in the air even minutes before Demi came on stage. I was not even able to see her for the first song because the smartphones were blocking my view. Of course that is not only cruel for me or any other fan who actually wants to completely enjoy the show but I feel like that’s absolutely disrespectful to the artists themselves when they see nothing but people with phones. And to be completely honest- that ruined the concert for me. The show was amazing. I feel like the sound was a little off but Demi, her dancers and her band were awesome. Demi seriously is a queen, I cannot argue with that. I just wished and I still wish that people would dance more at her concert. I totally understand how overwhelming it is to see someone you loved for so long. But what are the odds that you someday sit down to watch a whole 5 minute video of a concert? What happens in 10 years when you have the 3rd new phone and your old videos are gone? Exactly. Memories will stay forever. And I really wished that people would enjoy a concert, listen with their heart, see with their eyes and don’t do all this through a screen or whatever.
Why I am writing this though is because of what happened after the concert, or rather said the next day. Since I booked I train back home the next day before Demi announcing another concert in that city, I was not able to go. But I met up with a girl I met online through a Demi group and our hostels were quite close to the venue itself. So we met up in the late morning before I had to catch my train.
Looking at the queue got us thinking. You have so many different kinds of people sitting there, it’s hard to understand for anyone who is not a Lovatic. Sometimes at concerts, people just wanna have a good time. There you have people sitting who have all kinds of different issues and come together because they feel connected to Demi in ways no one can explain that. Not only is it people with mental issues, panic attacks, depression or other kinds of problems, but also fans with their pride flags- the special and most important thing I have seen and learned is that you don’t even have to talk about these things for someone to understand because Lovatics understand you without even saying a a word. They accept you for who you are. Now you might think that should be normal, but it isn’t. How many people were sitting there with issues they cannot share with their family or even their friends? But they know Demi understands. They know Lovatics understand and t the ydon’t have to change or explain themselves.
So I was standing there with this new made Demi friend and we talked about all this. Demi is the reason everyone is here, she did that. This connection everyone has is because of her. Because of her music, because of her honesty, because of how she shared her story and helped everyone by doing that. Because she accepts people the way they are. We started to cry. Both of us. I am even tearin up just writing this. I felt a little heartbroken to leave the city because I felt like I didn’t appreciate the night before as much as I should have.
But I am beyond glad that I went to see her after all these years. I didn’t know it was possible to love Demi even more, but I do.
