I know there’s a lot of hype right now over the girl shown for a split second in the new Frozen 2 trailer, and whether or not she’s going to be a love interest for Elsa. Personally, I’ve named the girl Pretty Leaf Girl until further information is known. Here she is, spotted at 1:24:
So anyway, back to the point of this.
My mom (who, for the record, is one the coolest and most gay-positive people I know) asks, when I bring it up, “why does Elsa need a love interest at all?”
I agree with you, momma. And I really LOVE the way that newer Disney ladies have been having more adventures and less love interests, and I absolutely adore all the new cool Disney ladies that have no love interests at all. That’s important for a lot of reasons, like showing little girls that they’re whole in themselves, and don’t need anyone to complete them. I hope that we keep seeing more of them. And I truly really adore that Elsa was one of them.
But since Disney has decided to make a sequel that already has a good audience, and Elsa is one of the most popular Disney ladies of all time (maybe the most? I’m too lazy to look it up) I think that this is the perfect opportunity to do something important. Something important like giving Elsa a love interest that is a girl.
Why is this so important? I know that for me, growing up loving Disney and only ever seeing hetero pairs in my favorite movies did NOT help me out when I was trying to force myself to like boys (spoiler alert: that didn’t work). And unfortunately, I know that my experience isn’t that unique. TONS of wlw have struggled with self acceptance at one time or another, and many are currently struggling - I even know quite a few personally.
The fact of it is, if I (and many other wlw) had grown up seeing just ONE of my favorite princesses having another princess by her side instead of a prince, I would have been more likely to think that it was okay for me to like girls. And I would have been saved from a lot of the hurt and difficulty I experienced because I didn’t think I was “allowed” to like girls.
I’m only asking for one gay Elsa. Not even for me, because it’s already too late for me. Elsa needs to be gay for all of the little kids who love her, to show them that it’s perfectly okay. To save future wlw from all the hurt and difficulty of accepting themselves that we had to face.

Disney has the perfect opportunity here to be pioneers, and really actually change the world. They have the opportunity to make something better for many future generations, and even current generations.
Of course it’s a risk, but no change can happen without taking a risk.
So will Disney pave the way to a new world of possibility? Or will they take the easy way out, play it safe, and not do anything special?
I suppose time will tell.
