THROUGH THE EYES OF A SAKAMAKI CHILD

shu : from innocence to indifference

as a child, shu was deeply attached to the one person who represented the only genuine bond in his life: his friend, edgar. the human boy whose death taught him that attachment leads to suffering.

friendship is something he discovered on his own, something that was his to cherish, something that fell outside of the circle of “perfect” he was expected to live up to. the sudden removal of it pushed shu’s child self into emotional withdrawal, a defense mechanism.

rather than lashing out or seeking revenge, he shut down.

now, surprisingly it isn’t common knowledge to parts of the fandom, but none of the characters in Diabolik Lovers are inherently the “safer” one or any less of a red flag than the other. to put it bluntly, they are all bad people. (diabolic, if you will)

but the thing is they are bad people who have lived in horrible environments. they know no different. they are bad people who eventually learn how to love. they are bad people who come to realize they are all dangerous people who have gone through undeserved, unfortunate events.

Diabolik Lovers is about them finding love with a person who learns to love them exactly the way they are (some of them even try to change for the MC, and the MC does the same.)

shu is the character who the fandom, or even most wiki websites depict as “the lazy one who listens to music”, maybe simply “the oldest one”, “the boring one”, or even the “safer” option, in some instances.

(note: shu’s passive sadism is arguably the most insidious; he does not necessarily need to physically inflict to cause suffering, but that’s a topic that deserves its own separate analysis…...)

shu is ACTUALLY a defiant character, even from a young age.

as a child, shu’s rebellion was having a life outside of the environment that was created by his mother (the before-mentioned circle of “perfect”).

after edgar’s death and after growing older, shu’s “laziness” was not born out of a lack of proficiency but instead as a direct rejection of the expectations and responsibilities placed on him.

by refusing to engage, he also avoids further emotional pain.

(note: he is a love interest, so he does need to have a characater archetype which is to be "the lazy one",, but theres so much to where that stems from)

his behavior is often mistaken for mercy or even gentleness, rather than a form of rebellion or self preservation.

Hi! I like your analyses and information about Shu Sakamaki, and I was wondering if you could answer a theory I have about him and his relationship with Yuma. What do you think would have happened if Shu's childhood friend had been a girl (a female version of Yuma)? Do you think he would have fallen in love with her? I ask because fans often say that when you play Shu's route, it seems more like a romance between Shu and Yuma. I haven't played the games, but what do you think Shu would do if he recognized his childhood friend? Do you think anything would be different because of the female version of Yuma? How do you think their relationship would be, both in Shu's route and in other routes?

i think a female edgar would've still done the same things edgar taught shu (friendship, how to hunt, how to survive outdoors, how to start fires, etcetcetc.) i dont think gender would change anything about that. but eitherway, if shu developed romantic feelings, i don't think he would've understood them at the time, especially since every diaboy grew up with warped understandings of love. so even if those feelings existed,, fundamentally,, their relationship would remain exactly the same because friendship comes first!!!!

the scene where yuma regains his memories of his past as edgar/of shu felt so underwhelming for me (IM A FEIN FOR DRAMA WTV),,, the way shu was impacted by the incident with edgar is the rare instance in DL where a sakamaki brother was shaped by something that didnt happen directly under karlheinz's influence (like. solely relating to the mommy issues part 😭),, which is why i was hoping for more than shu just taking the blame for everything. (reiji im looking at YOU)

i say this because of how ironic it is that shu is the type of character to avoid all sorts of responsibility and yet whenever it comes to the edgar incident he blames HIMSELF??? even though he genuinely wasn't at fault??

as for any changes in shu's route... even if (female or not) edgar had been someone shu had loved romantically prior to meeting yui, i think his relationship with yui would still develop the same way because of who yui is and because of who shu becomes around her.

that being said... ive been thinking about it but i genuinely have no idea if things would be different in the other routes. technically since DL is an otome game and shu is a potential love interest for yui, im not sure how the game would go about purposefully giving shu "female edgar"/yuma as a love interest that isn't yui

tl dr; even if edgar had been a girl, i dont think it would've changed the story greatly, what would've changed is how people interpreted shu and yumas relationship

Question. As a Shu fan. Do you think the Reiji/ Yuma/ Shuu drama plot works better how it was written in HDB? where Shuu doesn't know what happend to Yumas village and Reijis crime is a secret to be revealed. OR do you prefer that Shuu does know and chooses to blame himself either way.

It was a interesting change that they added to Reiji and Shuus dynamic and I just wanna hear your thoughts on it.

HONESTLY. as much as i hate to see shu suffer, i prefer him knowing. you're so right about it being an interesting change to shu and reijis dynamic, especially seeing how reiji deals/react with the situation. like, deep down he knows it was out of pocket 😭 and seeing shu blame himself adds to his character and even partially shows why he is the way he is,,, it shows vulnerability which is something i love to see w the diaboys

CRUEL OR MISUNDERSTOOD?(spoiler alert: its BOTH???)

carla: the embodiment of machiavellianism

carla as a character isn't misunderstood, but his reasons behind being “cruel” are misinterpreted. (note: there's a difference trust me)

carla wasn’t raised to be a man, he was “raised” to be a ruler. within carla's first few scenes we see he gets DOWN TO BUSINESS.

hes a founder, so he doesn't have the same exact craving that the vampires do BUT. while yui's blood is "special" it doesn't change the fact that a lot of the times in which carla sucked her blood it was for shits and giggles (to instill fear). his goal was to continue the founder bloodline, and yui was an important tool in the plan.

endzeit (aka the disease that only affects founders and killed off his entire bloodline aside from him and his brother haha..) creates a desperation within him, but one he refuses to acknowledge outwardly. while he does say he doesn’t care how yui sees/perceives him, that obviously changes later on since he distances himself and refuses help. it was his curiosity regarding humans which led him to warm up to yui. he didn’t have much outside interaction at all, so reading gave him a lot of insight. all in all, he doesn’t want to be perceived as anything but the image he set for himself.

i dont think hes the type to be ashamed at all, though. he already accepted his fate, so like i said, he just wants to keep the image he set for himself.

(note: unfortunately it’s hard to make a solid point about endzeit bc rejet switched up sooo hard after DF and endzeit continued to affect carla even in lost eden…)

the validation he sought from his father when he was younger led him to be faced with an eventual "betrayal". he showed his father the magic he’d started developing (something which he believed would help him earn his father’s approval), but his father didn't praise him, though. he actually feared carla's strength.

(what does a machiavellian do when faced with a perceived threat? eliminate it.)

carla’s cruelty is not born from just sadistic pleasure but rather from an ideology rooted in survival and supremacy of the first bloods.

each of carla’s endings is a different answer to the question of what matters more: power or “humanity”.

(note: i especially love yui in this route because she indirectly challenges carla’s belief that vulnerability equals weakness.)

in his brute ending, he fully embraces ruthless ideals, giving in to the idea that emotions are weaknesses.

in his manservant ending, his downfall was set by his inability to act on his emotions until it was too late.

in his vampire ending, he finally acknowledges his feelings and allows himself to change.

Do you prefer playing from yui pov as an mc or yourself as an mc as a self ship?

IT DEPENDS. i usually see MCs as their own character, separate from myself. in DL there's just alot of things yui says and does that i would never do, and i bet there's alot of things i would say and do that she wouldn't do. (the good, bad, brave, and embarassing.)

sometimes as i play or read TLs, i play with yui in mind, but afterwards in my freetime i think about what i would've done instead. sometimes i think about what i would do or say as im playing,, but ultimately it depends on the type of scene.

i cant say i have a preference exactly... but i do think it's more fun to imagine myself as an mc throughout the routes

i would say one of the things is definetely the question of how shu's character came to be. whether someone is or isn't aware of just how sadistic he is, you have to wonder how his mind worked during the timeframe of just after edgar's death and the shu that we know today.

there isn't a determined cause for the origin of sadism (so whether sadism is genetic or environmental isn't clear). maybe shu was born sadistic, maybe it was partly an inborn thing, being a vampire and son of karlheinz. maybe his mother's mental abuse and abudance of stress pushed onto him were the big factors. maybe it was edgar's death.

i briefly touched on the subject of his sadism in my analysis post but i feel like there's not much that we know about what went inside his mind in his upbringing.

(note: there's been people who experienced no trauma yet found themselves to be sadists, so maybe it really isn't about the upbringing,, but since this is Diabolik Lovers, i feel like there is more to it.)

Hello! what's you favorite DL game regarding Shu? Also what the moment that you like the most between yourself and Shu in game ?

this might sound rather basic but i love shu in hdb,,, in my opinion, it can't be beaten SIMPLY BECAUSE when i think of shu, i think of his character in hdb. like, yes that's shu right there!!! the mismatched parts of his personality;; (irritable, perverted, distant, lazy, sarcastic) which made him so appealing to me. he's so mysterious, hes so WEIRD i love it.

BUT. i do have a special place in my heart for shu in dark fate ... the CGs are beautiful and i feel like a more vulnerable part of himself was visible. the whole fiasco regarding what reiji said to him and shu's departure and him believing the others were better off without him (shu you are so loved..💔);; THIS ROUTE HURT. but there were so many cute moments. and i really like his character development from hdb to DF. it's really clear in DF how he breaks out of his cycle of continuous coping mechanisms, his own bubble of comfort to try and save yui!! seeing him frustrated and how he views himself because his efforts haven't been enough for others and seeing it for himself is just something so humane (the concept of trial and error is a compound to human nature. ironic considering he's a vampire),, and it's also something i've noticed in the other DF routes as well, we see a side of the boys which is more vulnerable,, it's so interesting to me.

honestly i love shu throughout his entire hdb route it's hard to choose a favorite scene. i find that he's funny as FUCK in his perverted moments though,, it's like everything is an innuendo with him. in DF, i love the moments with shu, lily, and yui. THEY'RE SO CUTE.

also. i really need to mention. the scenes of reiji and shu in DF are so...(im ripping my hair out. THEY RUIN ME. their relationship is so complex. their scenes tugged on my heartstrings. seriously. and in the end they finally reach a sort of "level-ground", i guess you could call it. THEY MEAN SO MUCH TO ME SO. PLUS POINTS.
