Forever thinking about Jeff x Shirley...
Highkey the writers treated Shirley': romantic life like dirt. Everyone else in the study group sans pierce gets to mack on each other, while Shirley has to stand in the corner and all she gets is a crazy person and her cheating ex-husband again.
Yeah, the whole Chang/Shirley thing is funny, but why is her only romantic entanglement with an actual character we know played for laughs? Why is the only Black woman in the cast not allowed the same romantic autonomy that all the other young people are? Forever mad about that but I digress
The potential for both of their arcs is so good!!
Like Jeff gets to date someone his own age!! And can you imagine? him having to babysit?? Him grappling with the fact that he could become a step dad? Boydad Jeff trying to break the cycle like come onnnn, that's so juicy!!
And Shirley getting to grow past her rigid morals, the things that have kept her upright through the cycles of monotony in her home life ! She gets to move past her shitty ex-husband, and choose someone who's so different from her but makes every day feel new and worthwhile!!
like ough I need to write shit for them, the dynamic is is too danm good 😌
why don’t we talk about how Troy was canonically on tumblr
The weird homophobia of the 2011 Fright Night
I never liked the 2011 reboot of Fright Night for many reasons. I hated the loss of the vampires’ ability to take wolf and bat forms, and the loss of Jerry Dandridge recognizing Amy as resembling a lost love. It’s a cliche trope in vampire stories now but I liked it. I hated that Peter Vincent’s character growth was utterly lost. There were lots of things I hated…
However, as I sit and think about it, I realize there’s another very good reason to dislike the Fright Night reboot. It’s blatantly homophobic… It really, really is.
When they were asked why Evil Ed is no longer portrayed as a closeted gay kid (which was hinted at in the original) the answer was given that teens don’t have to deal with homophobia like the 1980s. Umm… What? There are plenty of kids who end up homeless because their “religious” homophobic parents rejected them. There are many who haven’t quite accepted themselves yet and don’t want to be different.
Ed was not only a closet gay kid, he was played by a gay man. Now he has been utterly straight washed.
Not only that but Billy Cole (who was implied to be Jerry’s henchman and very likely lover) was removed from Fright Night entirely.
Peter Vincent was named for Peter Cushing and Vincent Price and in the original Fright Night he was a has-been horror movie star and now host of a horror TV series. If you don’t know what a horror host is think of the Crypt Keeper at the start of each episode of Tales from the Crypt, or Elvira. A good update on this could have been someone with a web series who did web reviews and commentaries and was still a hasbeen horror actor.
The Fright Night remake turned Peter Vincent into a Las Vegas style stage magician, removing all reference to the men he was based on. The claim given was that today “Kids don’t know what horror hosts are.” Considering horror hosts still exist and you can even find youtube channels of horror hosts, I find this questionable. Technically The Talking Dead on AMC is a horror host TV series.
And this is also bothersome because the original Peter Vincent was played by Roddy McDowall (who spent most of his life in the closet) and the character was based, at least partly, on Vincent Price, whose daughter confirmed after his death, that he had been bisexual. Again, straight washed.
So to recap, the 2011 Fright Night Straight Washed Evil Ed, removed Jerry’s henchman / male lover and indication that he wanted a polyamorous relationship with Amy, and changed Peter Vincent so drastically that he no longer resembled the older bisexual man he was originally based on- or the gay man he was played by, and they tried to make him more ”macho” and masculine.
You would think the more recent version would have been more open about the characters’ sexual identities but instead it straightwashed everyone.
It’s odd but I think the 2011 Fright Night is more dated and more conservative than it’s 1985 counterpart. Hell, the 1988 sequel even had a mute Trans vampire. What did the Fright Night 2011 reboot’s sequel give us? A direct to video sequel that was actually yet another reboot…
@sorry-for-the-chocolate
My rant about the Fright Night remake. And don’t get me started on them downplaying the vampires’ powers.
I gotta watch this movie
@sorry-for-the-chocolate
The homosexuality / bisexuality is subtle. Peter Vincent’s sexuality isn’t discussed at all but it’s safe to say he’s a “bi coded” hero, being played by a bi man and partly inspired by a bi Man.
(Roddy McDowall, Peter Vincent’s actor on the left. Vincent Price, part of the inspiration for Peter Vincent on the right.)
The most overt homosexual scenes are when Jerry (the vampire) talks to Ed in the alley and Jerry’s relationship with Billy (his henhcman.).
Ed’s actor said he felt that the scene was actually about Ed’s closet sexuality and he played Ed as closet gay. (He, himself, being gay in real life.)
This is not a promo picture. This IS a scene in the movie.
(Jerry Dandridge (who may or may not be Dracula himself) the vampire on the left, Billy Cole (who was probably a ghoul or half-turned vampire) on the right. Billy was removed from the remake all together.)
thank you kayvan for your gay whore acting

Rewatching what we do in the shadows is not good for the soul. This is not a comfort show. I do not feel comforted. Nandermo is getting to me.
Bettie Page was a pin-up model in the 1950s. She quit the business and started a religious path in life. Sometime in the late 1960s - early 1970s her life started to fall apart. She had several violent episodes and was diagnosed schizophrenic.
During the height of her popularity and resurgence in the 1980s and 1990s, she was serving time in a mental home for multiple stabbings where she was found legally insane. She left mental facilities in 1992, never knowing of her popularity until a few years before her death in 2008.
