So I compared (and slowed down) the "friends" in the leaked footage and the "best friends" (only the "friends part) and they match perfectly. So they were either already broken up or broke up in that scene

Both Will and El assume that Mike isn’t different. El says that Mike doesn’t understand her bullying because she’s actually different while he is not. Will explains being different in a way that makes it seem like Mike doesn’t understand. They feel misunderstood by him because they’re different and he’s not. Will and El were covering something up in these scenes so it makes sense for their assumption to be a lie too, even if they weren’t aware of this.

Mike’s reaction to them saying they’re different is completely blurred. We don’t even get a glimpse of his thoughts through words or expressions… would it be too revealing? Would it tell us that he’s different too?

Can you imagine being Mike in this position? He wants to tell them that he understands what it’s like but he can’t because he would have to say what makes him different. He’s stuck in a place of wanting them to feel understood while also wanting to be understood himself, but the only way to achieve both is by saying it out loud. Mike would have to admit to them that he’s queer.

So maybe someone will accuse him of not being different one last time and he’ll have to say it. He’ll have to say out loud that he’s different too and that he understands. Mike needs to voice his internal struggle to someone so he can move forward with his acceptance of himself. Everyone assumes he doesn’t get it so he deserves to say that he does!
