So recently, I heard someone say about Stranger Things, that each season is just a little worse than the last. By that logic, the first season must be the best! I decided to watch the first season, as a standalone season, and see how it held up.
Review: I liked it a lot! The plot and pacing was good, I liked the characterization, and it was age appropriate how the characters clashed, both within their age group, and out of it! I also think they did a really good job with casting, especially for the teenagers. Each of the 3 main groups (the adults, the teens, and the kids), have part of the puzzle, and all combined, they have a mostly complete puzzle, but they don't truly put it together until close to the end. Us as the audience have most of it from watching all groups, and we get to watch them put it all together!
It was surprising to me how much the show kept it's mystery, specifically about the demogorgon and Eleven's powers. The true scale of what Eleven can do was kept unavailable to the audience until the very end, same with the demogorgon and the upside down. I only saw ST after it became a big thing (probably after/during season 2), so I never got much of the mystery, but I can imagine how big it was while it was releasing.
(this paragraph contains season 1 spoilers) I also enjoyed the ending! It absolutely sets stuff up for season 2, and, with how big the show got after one season, I can absolutely see the show runners getting the go ahead for season 2 before season 1 finished up. Who's Hopper giving food to in the woods? Will is spitting up slugs and having flashbacks. That's probably important!
Overall: 9/10. Would recommend! To be honest, that one point was taken of for the ridiculous amount of flashing lights during important events. I don't have any medical conditions that are triggered by flashing lights, but the finale is probably going to give someone a seizure. This isn't an epilepsy friendly show. I wish that there was a way to reduce or remove the flashing lights, but I don't think that's an option Netflix provides.
On to season 2!
its so scary making plans with new friends. what if i suggest something stupid and we have a terrible time and they find out im a fraud and not a real human being
I *just* got done spending time with my new friend and I already want to hang out with him again

the Neprfam!
i wanted to make a birth family for Sigyn, since she doesnt have one in canon, so i cobbled together some unrelated minor gods. Very little of this is canon. However, I also wanted them to look distinct enough that it could be either. Most of them, especially the women, don't have defined family beyond their spouses and kids, and I wanted to put them all somewhere. There are more in the family that aren't drawn, so I'm going to draw them and rearrange the family sometime soon.
left to right, Nepr, Gna, Itreksjod, Nanna, Ran, Aegir, Sigyn, Meili, Idis, Forseti. Aegir is the only in-law in this picture, all of the others are direct decendants of Nepr and Gna, the parents. For clarity, here's the family tree.
Lokifam! everyone knows these guys
Most of these designs are what I call "design sharks" meaning that they don't change much over the course of time. Loki and Angrboda are definitely some of them. Historically, I've drawn them both a lot, and that causes designs to simplify over time.
Sigyn is exactly the opposite, it's taken me a surprising amount of time to nail her down to where I've been satisfied. Not this design, though. The present one.
I've had the idea for shapeshifter elder Lokisons for a while now, and here are their Jotunoid forms. Fenris helps his mom a lot with heavy lifting and likes to show off to people. To contrast, Jormungand hides his limbs in loose, layered clothes, which I wanted to be reminiscent of a snakeskin. Jormungand has also struck me as a "gender is for other people" sort of person. Any pronouns will work.
I had the idea for Hel to have cerebral palsy some time ago, and while she can stand, she's definitely not stable. In her day to day, she uses a motorized wheelchair (what we would see as such) and a cane. Hel really wants to switch places with Jormungand (blue) in this lineup, because if she falls down, she doesn't think Vali (pink) is strong enough to catch her.
It took a while to design the younger Lokikids, and most of them got redesigned later. I hit Vali's design right out of the gate, though.
left to right, Loki, Sigyn, Angrboda, Fenris (alt form), Jormungand (alt form), Hel, Vali Lokison, Nari, Narvi. Backround is Fenris (wolf form), and Jormungand (snake form)
Genuinely love this interpretation of the family, especially your take on the twins. Instead of Narfi and Vali, you made Nari and Narvi the twins because of the name confusion.. I've always wanted to do something similar but never knew how to execute it 🤭
Thank you so much! I've had the idea of 6 Lokikids instead of 5 for a while, makes the two groups mirror each other.
Also, the twins and Sigyn got heavily redesigned! But they're still twins, and still similar

Njordfam! the best known gods in this are Frey and Freyja
left to right, Njord, Skadi, Gerd, Frey, Freyja, Oth, Hnoss and Gersemi Freyjadottirs, Fjolni Freyson
finished the Odinfam. well, those who are known for it
These guys were fun to design.
Odin and Frigga I wanted to match, but contrast. It was hard to balance the disguised traveler and king of the gods with Odin, but I think I did a good job. Frigga is The Queen, and runs things while Odin's away. Her clothing is not especially ornate in color or style, but if you know where to look, it's clearly well made. She's far more understated compared to Freyja or Sif, but she's definitely in charge.
The Odinfam twins, Balder and Hod, were interesting to design, and I might change Hod's colors so they match more. Balder's name means "prince", and he's frequently portrayed as shining. I tried to give him a lot of sun in his design, he has blonde, curly hair and the trim in his clothes shimmers. Hod picks his clothes on texture more than anything else, but his and Balder's clothes have similar silhouettes. If you're thinking that Hod is holding a very thin cane, you'd be right. That's not a weight support cane (like what Hel and Aegir have), it's a detection cane for a blind person. Hod is holding it at a weird angle for visual clarity. If he was going to use it, you, the viewer, wouldn't be able to see it as well.
Thor is a quick, simple design. His jewelry is metal, and mostly on his dominant side. I modeled him after professional weightlifters and strongmen. He's also the tallest out of all of the figures I drew, at 7 feet! Sif was also easy to design. She's a vain harvest and wealth goddess, so she has a lot of jewelry. I also want all of the harvest/food deities to be fat, and all in different ways. I think Sif needs some fine-tuning though. Lengthen her torso and shorten her legs, but keep her the same height.
The Thorkids are fun to work with. They're not yet grown, and have gotten very strong in a very short period of time. The other kids know not to give them fragile things anymore. They're all sweet kids, but they break things on accident.
left to right, Odin, Frigga, Balder, Hod, Thor,Sif, Thrud, Magni, Modi,
o, thats a lot of people. left to right, Loki, Sigyn, Angrboda, Odin, Skadi, Thor, Sif, Frey, Freyja, Balder, Hod, Frigga, Heimdall, Hel, Fenris, Jormungand
after this, i started dividing by family, this was getting ridiculous.
the elder Lokikids.
i had the idea for Hel having hemiplegic cerebral palsy some time ago, so i did a lot of research. (phrase breakdown: hemi=only one side, plegic = paralysis, cerebral=affecting the brain, palsy = paralysis. so a person with hemiplegic cerebral palsy has a condition where, because of a brain injury in/near birth, 2 of their limbs, on the same side of the body, are paralyzed.) i think it would work well, story-wise.
i also headcanon Fenris and Jormungand as shapeshifters, like their parents, just preferring nonhumanoid (nonjotunoid?) forms
