Paintings by artist Sophia Laskaridou (1876 - 1965). After studying art in Académie Julian in Paris, she returned to Greece and was the first woman to stand before king George I of Greece and demand the attendance of women in Greek Schools of Art. She succeeded, becoming a student under famous painters Nikiforo Lytra and George Iakovidis as well as opening the path to the future of greek female artists.

Some lovely ladies, painted by artist Thalia Flora - Karavia (1871-1960). She was one of the most important representatives of the impressionism movement in Greece, and her full work is yet to be recorded since she is said to have created more than 2.500 artworks, including oil paintings, sketches and watercolours.

“Kleoniki Gennadiou” (approx. 1858-1859) by Bavarian painter Ludwig Thiersch (1825-1909).

“The model pictured here is Kleoniki Gennadiou, one of the first female Greek painters and sculptors, daughter of diplomat and author Ioannis Gennadios. She was born in Athens (the exact date is unknown but it's believed to be around 1825) and died in 1909. Most of her life was spend abroad where she also studied, since her art never got the appreciation it deserved in her native country, whereas in the rest of Europe, it was praised. She never got married, devoting her life entirely to her art and close family.

In this particular portrait, she is pictured outdoors, something quite rare for a painting of the era. Behind her there's the sea, a giant rock, a blue sky full of white clouds, elements that remind us of her home country. Kleoniki Gennadiou, with her romantic beauty and dreamy gaze, represents the way a foreign painter pictures the ideal Greek beauty.”

“Katerina Botsaris was the daughter of revolution fighter Markos Botsaris. Born in Ioannina, Greece within the Greek revolution that took place between 1821 and 1830, when it eventually ended, she was captured by the Ottomans when she was young but eventually returned to Greece once the revolution was over. Taken under Queen Amalia's protection after the country's liberation from the Ottomans, she was given the title of "Lady-in-Waiting" and travelled throughout Europe accompanying the Queen in European Courts. She was given the nickname "Roza" after the word "rose", a flower whose beauty was equivalent to hers. She got married to General Georgios Karantzas and had four children. She died in Athens in 1875.”
