if this is your first rpf ship here are my personal rules to doing rpf ethically:

accept that rpf occupies an ethical gray area. rpf can be super fun and joyful, but it involves working with (the public images of) real people. therefore you as an rpf shipper have more responsibility than fans of a traditional media property to behave well and model good behavior for other fans. the onus is on YOU and other shippers to respect boundaries and maintain clear lines, NOT on the celebrity, who is simply a person living their life.

keep your rpf fic locked. keep your rpf twitter private. understand the risks of engaging in rpf on platforms that use algorithms to serve fandom content to people outside of fandom circles (tiktok, twitter, insta). personally i think we should NOT be doing rpf at all on those platforms but i accept that there are thriving rpf communities there. (thriving rpf communities that often have terrible boundaries!!)

remember it is not real. It Is Never Ever EVER Real. the more invested you are in a ship the more intense your feelings will be about their fictional romance and the more you are at risk of convincing yourself to believe in the fictional stories you and your friends are constructing. you must remember that it is not real. they are not actually dating, fucking, yearning for each other, whatever in real life. and if they WERE doing any of those things they clearly don't want YOU to know about it, so you should continue to operate under the ironclad belief that your ship is not real. you are playing with characters based on real people, not the real people themselves. you might know a lot about the characters you have invented but you know NOTHING about the real people. and that is how it should be!

Opalite - a song about a love that has lasted, someone who is the one who "makes their own sunshine". Yeaaaah kaylor are married guys.

Father Figure - lolll this song is about bearding (probably with joe). "This love is pure profit" "they'll know your name in the streets, leave it with me", enough said hahah.

Eldest Daughter - another song about enduring love through hard times, still no male pronouns btw

Talking to a Mutual and wanted to remind you of this—being critical of Taylor’s choices and music doesn’t make you a bad fan. Fandom shouldn’t mean unconditional support no matter what a person does—that’s a cult. I stayed part of the Kaylor fandom for way longer than I should have because I allowed bigger blogs to mentally bully me into submission. They made me feel like I was a bad fan, only focusing on the negative, using toxic positivity to keep their own fantasy alive, while the whole time my gut was screaming “but this isn’t right! This isn’t what a good person would actually do!!”

Tumblr is a lot less fun when no one interacts with with you, and these Taylor Stan blogs know that. They need you to keep commenting and reblogging to fulfill their own interests and keep the fantasy alive for them too

I have never wish for Taylor’s downfall, rather, I want the truth about who she is, how she got to where she is today, and how she has used PR to manipulate all factions of her fans into believing their own narratives are correct and that she loves them best of all to be known by the general public

I think there may be a glimmer of Rep and Lover and folkmore Taylor left in there, and if she ever gets brave enough to fucking face reality and own up to her mistakes, I would root for that personal growth. As time has gone on I doubt that is possible anymore, but hey, who knows
