You stood staring at yourself in the mirror, forehead stained with the residual cherry red hair dye you’d manically decided to buy weeks back—not using it until now. You’d gotten bored waiting for your superstar boyfriend to come home from practice, opting to entertain yourself by changing your appearance. Maybe it’d keep Leehan on his toes, a funny (semi-permanent) prank, you reasoned.
Just as you were finishing your eyebrows, trying your best to avoid the skin and only follow the shape—but, like your forehead (which has an arguably easier line to follow), it was beginning to look like a kindergarten’s coloring book—you hadn’t realized the door was now open. Maybe it was because you were hyper-fixated on perfecting the job, or the music that was blaring through your apartment; even, you were surprised nobody had knocked… not that you’d hear it either way.
You jumped, startled by the confused, yet content look on your boyfriend's face. You’d caught a glimpse of him leaned on the doorframe through the mirror, as you were practically seated in the sink, legs pressed to your torso. He was observing, slightly taken aback by your choices, however, he’d never dictate your life, as it was yours in the first place. He respected you too much to be controlling.
“Oh!” You watched as his arms uncrossed, ready to catch you as you leaned back just a bit too far. Your body jolted forward and you almost left eyebrow marks comedically behind on the glass. “Hey, baby!”
He huffed out a laugh, and reached for your phone to turn the music down manually, since he doubted that even Alexa could hear him.
“You chose red?” His head cocked as the words came out.
“Do you hate it? I thought that maybe it should’ve been darker but, I think it’ll still be cute—maybe. I thought it’d be like when you had your red hair for point two seconds, literally one night, that was so hot.” He further approached, resting his arms around your waist and squishing them in between where your stomach was meeting the tops of your thighs. “Not that I don’t think you’re hot right now as a blonde, but… there was something about the red. I’m just a sucker for it—do you think it’ll look as good on me as it does you? You should really do it again.”
He listened to your rant adamantly, convinced that you were the reincarnation of an angel, a past-soulmate, his other half. He found you so incredibly enticing. He was convinced that if he ever lost the feeling, nobody would be able to reinstate it. Because you were it, you were all he’s ever wanted—all he’s ever needed in life—cherry red stains and all.
“It’ll fade to the shade you want, trust me.” He left a kiss on your shoulder, “But, I think you look perfect with whatever hair color, whatever clothes, whatever makeup, whatever anything that you decide to do.”
Your face lit-up through the mirror, ignoring the gentle confessions of your boyfriend. Opposites attract though, right? You clocked the light shade of hair he had at the moment, freshly bleached (a couple days ago) and toned nicely. “Do you want to do it too?” He laughed in response, neither agreeing with nor denying your suggestion, “I still have some left! We could match, you know, couple-things.”
But, oh God, did he love the little cherry red stain you left on his heart.

You grumbled, crossing your arms over your chest. Honestly, you weren’t even mad for a warrantable reason, however, your boyfriend, Jaehyun, let you complain the whole way home about how the store didn’t have your favorite Oreo flavor, his hand intertwined with yours. He also knew that it wasn’t about the cookies being missing. He knew it was bigger than that—the premise—the atmosphere, the ‘how it ruined your mood’ because you were so excited. He offered to search them out at a different place but you just wanted to take a nap instead.
He missed your smile, it weighed heavy on his heart that you were stressed and letting the little things get to you. It wasn’t that serious, but he’d never undermine the things that made tears fall from the eyes he loved so much.
That night, you were doing your nightly scrolling through TikTok when a video you overlooked clung to his thoughts. He knew you so well, he knew it would work next time you got overstimulated.
So, the next time you’d gone to the store, overwhelmed by how the clothes weren’t fitting you the way you’d imagined in your head, or how the tiny room was too hot, and the lights too bright, he tried it.
The animated vegetables danced across the screen, spinning and twirling in pattern. Jaehyun glanced at your face, eyes locked and wide. The spoon from which you’d just taken a bite of ice cream from was hanging from between your lips, almost forgotten due to your focus. He thought you looked cute, a smile creeping onto his features. He’d never seen you watch something so intently, the exact way sensory videos designed for babies encapsulated you; but as he grew to know, you were always easy to please… and piss off.
He was glad this hadn’t resulted in the latter.
