Im getting back into posting my art and publicly picking my brain with folks.
My recent art focuses on more uncomfortable themes, but first… there will be many bugs. Because I frickin love bugs.
Also this is an 18+ page, there’s gonna be nudeness, horror and generally psychologically dark things.
Day 10 Black Widow Spider
A beautiful spider that has captured the imagination of scientists and comic writers. Yes they have incredibly powerful venom, but they’re small, rarely kill anyone and yet still get such a bad reputation.
This beauty however is very loved by me, and is looking for her new forever home 🥺❤️

Day 9 Carpet Beetles
If you’re cold, they’re cold, let them inside 😂
Carpet beetles do a great job devouring and processing materials, unfortunately, we quite like those materials, but the poor beetle doesn’t know that!
Looking up close at these bugs was awesome and I feel a lot more sympathetic towards their munching ways!

Day 8 Fire Ants
Learning about these was as fascinating as it was horrifying. An incredibly well adapted creature for survival and thriving, they have become a serious threat to ecology and economy!
There were plenty of science papers to delve into but sadly not enough time today to read more than a few abstracts!

Day 7 Praying Mantis
So many facts I didn’t even get to! The first fact most people learn about these bugs relates to the snacking while mating behaviour, making it a dying act for many males.
Some other amazing facts I didn’t have time for in this video: As well as amazing sight and reflexes, they also have an ear?! Mantises have greenish/blue blood because instead of hemoglobin like vertebrate use for blood, they have a copper-based protein called hemolymph, and that turns blue when oxygenated!

Another one of Britain’s best kept secrets! We often complain about our brown wildlife but there are some diamonds (or rubies in this case)
A beautiful velvet spider that at a glance looks like a ladybird! Unfortunately these spiders are at risk of disappearing from Britain so let’s learn about them and do our best to protect them!

Day 5 Matador Bug
These are stunning bugs, are the fancy relative to the much more commonly seen shield bug/stink bug. They are named after their leg waving behaviour which they use to defend against predators (rather than bulls).
Thank you to my wonderful partner for making the amazing bug music, I love that each video gets slightly better than the last 🥰

Day 4: Moth Fly
Oh how looks can be deceiving, the fluffy antenna and iridescent wings makes the feel like adorable little moths, but alas, these tiny flies bring grief to many.
The painting though came out gorgeously!

These wonderful bugs can completely close out the cruel harsh world around them (although they’re still peeking). A truly remarkable insect and although they don’t have a lot of bizarre facts about them, they don’t need it, they’re stunning and have a very impressive party trick.

Spittlebugs are awesome, they get a bad reputation for leaving cuckoo spit everywhere, but like all bugs, the more you learn about them, the more you appreciate them.
