there’s plenty of things that happen while speaking and interacting with my participants while in the field and some of them have me fighting back tears (i’m a sensitive person ok?). but the 1 thing that always has me showing emotion immediately is when my participants make duaa for me and leave me encouraging words. idk, man. i’m speechless. alhamdulillah.

i had to babysit the most beautiful little girl during my focus group discussions as i collected data for my disso. her mom said she’s rarely friendly, so she’s equally surprised how her daughter warmed up to me. facilitating my own fgd while carrying a participants toddler, feeding her and putting her to sleep was never on my bingo card.

i think it’s imperative for phd students to immerse themselves in literature outside of their area of study and focus in order to not be overwhelmed and consumed by the heavy work they’re building and creating and i’m glad i learnt this early.
