the wrath of a gentle man
one thing i find compelling about dragon in these last couple chapters is that, unlike a character like luffy or ace, it seems like dragon was not necessarily a naturally rebellious or contrary person from birth. he became a marine like his father wanted him to be. he addresses his superior with respect and attempts to follow orders until he realizes that he cannot tolerate what he's being asked to do.
this stands in contrast to luffy, who always rejected garp's attempts to make him a marine, not out of a moral dispute but because he wanted to be a pirate and be free to do whatever he wanted without professional responsibility or oversight. luffy just wants to have fun and protect his friends, and the universe is lucky that this often results in him liberating entire countries.
on the other hand, dragon's motivations are PURELY moral. he gets no joy out of any of this and has no personal connection to god valley or its inhabitants. he wasn't a teenage rebel trying to stick it to his dad. he wasn't an agent of chaos who regularly shoots celestial dragons with tranq darts. he probably would've been perfectly happy to fulfill his dad's expectations and be the best marine he could be...until he realized what doing so entails.
and in a way that makes him even more likeable to me, because he wasn't predisposed to question or dislike the marine system. if anything, quite the opposite. but his moral core is so strong that the moment he discovered the truth, he threw everything aside--his job, his orders, his father's desires, everything--and gave all he had to mitigate the situation.

The way you draw Dragon is just. So warm. And comforting. It’s beautiful.
Thank youuu <3
That's exactly what I'm trying to go for with him lately.
Bonus trials at an accurate dragon
in light of the recent chapter, i’d like to say that I hope everyone who ever used shanks to slander dragon and disqualify him as luffy’s father gets tinnitus and chronic diarrhea
far from the tree
was thinking how funny it was how different luffy and dragon look that i just ended up drawing both of them hahaha
