REVIEW: #IITSTRUESKOOL @ RICH MIX, MARCH 3RD

Industry In The Streets came back with extra fire for the 4th edition of True Skool. Held once again at Rich Mix, the IITS crew proudly presented the very best in old skool and new skool vibes.

With DJ Policy manning the decks and IITS MD Fusion & DJ Mika hosting, we kicked it off with the True Skool assembly featuring Bushkin, Narko and one half of winning Wandsworth Young Performer duo Maverick & Malachi. The session provided a captivating insight into their worlds as well as their lyrical and personal journeys.

We also saw a range of top-notch performances, from 17-year old hip hop dance wunderkind Sabea, south London lyricist Narko, beatbox/rap duo Maverick & Malachi, soulful Liverpudlian singer Esco Williams and former Heartless Crew emcee Bushkin. All was love in the Rich Mix, as artists and fans showed maximum support for each act.

The Skool Yard Battle brought its usual brand of drama as two brave soldiers from the audience slugged it out for supremacy on the mic. Dubzey and RJ King squared up to Just Blaze’s ‘PSA’ and Kanye’s ‘N*****s In Paris’ and drops bars until there was only won man standing. Congrats to Dubzey who eventually emerged as the champ.

Shining a light on our Enterprise Zone, we had guest stall holders DV8 Academy promoting education opportunities, fashion brand Anyforty showcasing a new collection, mixtapes from Narko and an interactive Blingwear graff wall that had to be seen to be believed.

An amazing night was had by all… and then the unexpected happened. Yep, that night we made history… but that’s just the way when you come to True Skool. Better make sure you don’t miss the next one, eh.

THAT MOMENT WHEN BUSHKIN, FONTI AND MIGHTY MOE PERFORMED ‘HEARTLESS THEME’ @ TRUE SKOOL

For one night only, Heartless Crew stepped onto the True Skool stage for a live version of the classic ‘Heartless Theme’. With that one spontaneous act at Industry In The Streets' live showcase, the net was suddenly awash with reunion rumours and confused FB messages from die-hard fans on FaceBook.

The moment came immediately after Bushkin wrapped up an amazing set debuting solo material with the IITS band. Host and IITS MD, Fusion gave thanks to Bushkin and asked the audience to show love for Fonti and Mighty Moe, as the duo prepared for their DJ/MC set as F.A.M.

“We were all in the building together and felt the vibe. We did it for the fans and for True Skool. It was an epic moment,” says Bushkin, who invited the boys up for an awesome live rendition of the HLC classic that captured the original spirit of the soundsystem dons.

HLC fans all know too well that MC Bushkin put down the mic as a rave MC on Jan 31st 2014 so that he could focus on developing his solo material. So in all honesty, the True Skool fans gathered in Rich Mix that night were blessed to witness three legends of the scene come together, inspired by a night of exceptional performances from emerging artists like teenage beatbox/MC duo Maverick & Malachi and rising soul star Esco Williams.

“That performance reminded me of what we started – it was a no brainer,” says Fonti, who showed that he is still equally at home on the mic as he is in the mix. “I understand music better now and I feel like I understand Moe and Bushkin even more now. I’m happy we did it.”

“That was a True Skool one-away - the whole experience was invigorating!” said Mighty Moe. “It’s important to give people space and freedom to do what they need to do, but it’s always going to be all love.” 

After an epic musical journey from boys to men that has spanned over a decade, it’s great to know that their heart is still in the music. Although the faithful will always see them as a unit, True Skool is excited about their new audio adventures.

F.AM. went on to shut it down that night with the wickedest TrueSkool selection (until security locked off the dance!) and Bushkin is set to give some seasoned artists a run for their money when he unleashes his new material. Don’t say IITS didn’t warn ya.

When he is not helping out with True Skool, our very own Woodzy is putting his own talent out there. As an up and coming artist, he has performed on the same stage as Angel and headlined IAMDV8 Festival. Having created a buzz online with various freestyles and promo videos it's time to unleash his new mixtape TouchWood.

Fusion will be hosting the event and the IITS team will be there in full support. "I'm really proud of Woodzy," says the IITS MD. "He has come a long way as an artist and this mixtape shows his incredible drive and commitment to carving out a successful career in the music industry."
