Why I think Shiguang can be canonically read as romantic
(I will only be using the donghua for reference, so no Studio Lan retweeting those fanarts (lmao) nor those especially gay manhwa panels (lmao x2) nor even the songs ("chase you to the end of the world, just to say your name once more" my beloved).
It's important to start off by saying that I'm aware Director Li said they ended up not making Lu Guang a girl because they didn't want romance to be seen as a must in Shiguang's relationship by the audience (and because he feels that "bros can have a good heart-to-heart connection with each other"). In my opinion that was a great move since it allows more freedom with how they write them than they'd have otherwise. I also think viewing Shiguang as queerplatonic is a great read too and it doesn't diminish their love for each other nor the importance of their relationship at all.
With that said, despite Director Li's words, there's been things that had me going 🤨 as someone who likes to adhere to canon relationships and read into the writer's intentions, so I wanted to share why I personally see them as romantic.
EPISODE 2
We've all seen this coming, right? Most obvious parallel ever, and in the second episode no less. We all know the similarities between both relationships, so I will just touch on those I consider the most important ones.
Lin Zhen and Yu Xia have gone to college together, and since then decided to start a business of their own - named after a mix of their names. They've been shown as being really close and having no romantic relationships. Lin Zhen also says that Yu Xia's happiness is her own, and then it's shown to us that she's gone through years of unhappiness just for Yu Xia. I believe you can replace their names with Lu Guang's and Cheng Xiaoshi's in your head without me writing all this again. And I'm not even going to get into the most obvious parallels like the special noodle recipe for each pair.
I think it's safe to say that Lin Zhen and Yu Xia are implied to be romantic. From that "one noodle" scene, to the close shot of Lin Zhen grabbing her hand, etc.
Now, I want to get into a writer's point of view and pose two questions:
1. What's the purpose of this episode, when even those which seem episodic connect to the overarching plot of season 1 (even the missing kid's case, as it leads to the involvement with the police)?
2. If we answer the previous question with the conclusion that it's meant to show us the nature/development of Cheng Xiaoshi's and Lu Guang's relationship, what does that say about it?
"Partner" in Link Click
Continuing with episode 2, what really got me thinking about the romantic intentions in their writing was the constant mention of marriage and anything in relation to it.
(may I remind everyone that the driver's comment was said when Cheng Xiaoshi was complaining about Lu Guang lmao)
They're telling us through "show don't tell" (for example, when Lin Zhen kept on eating the noodle despite knowing they'd kiss) and, also, connotations. They are presented to us as business partners, but then the entire episode goes on to tell us that there's more to them by tying their relationship to things percived as romantic. So what they want to really tell us is that beyond simple business partners, they're life-long partners.
And then, after establishing this kind of connotation to the word partner, Cheng Xiaoshi says this to Lu Guang in the next episode:
This doesn't stop at them. While it's the most obvious example, I think partnership in Link Click is intended to be seen as romantic, or at the very least dancing somewhere close to it. Let's go even further and take a look at our fully canon, heterosexual relationships and see briefly how their story is written:
1. Dong Yi and Xu Shanshan: both of them chose the comfort of each other's presence over moving on with their respective futures. Dong Yi had so much faith in their relationship and their love that he couldn't choose a life/future that didn't have Xu Shanshan - choosing to not go back to his family home nor go to that interview, and instead waiting for Xu Shanshan to define their relationship.
2. Liu Siwen and Ouyang: Siwen spent his entire life training with the purpose of getting his father-in-law's respect and marry Ouyang, going every year over and over to fight him. His perseverance and his undying love for her allowed Siwen to do the (seemingly) impossible.
3. Chen Bin and his wife: they're a tragedy. His wife understood Chen Bin the best, enduring feeling lonely because she loved him and wanted a future with him. But their relationship was cut short, so they promised each other to be together in a future life to make up for the time they wouldn't be in this one.
With this + the pictures I attached, it seems like Link Click has set this theme of "love is a life with you" for its romantic relationships, a partner that will fight to stay because they can't see a future that doesn't have their beloved. Going back to episode two, this applies even to the noodle ladies. When Yu Xia remembered what actually matters to her, she went back home - to the start, to her hometown. And, most importantly, to Lin Zhen.
So why is Shiguang romantic? Why aren't they queerplatonic, or just best friends, or bros or whatever else? Because besides what I said at the start of the previous paragraph, Shiguang's relationship mirrors a lot of the romantic ones. Each story and author writes romance and other kinds of relationships differently, portraying them in the way they perceive "this is what this kind of love is like". And beyond life-long partners, I think that the key elements of romantic relationships in Link Click are the ones I highlighted in bold above in the 3 canon relationships part - which Shiguang shares, too.
(I didn't mention this before with the het couples, but I find it a little amusing that season 2 happened because a man wanted to go to the past and get his wife back (still fuck you Qian Jin) and then we find out Lu Guang did go back to the past and got his boyfriend partner back lmao).
"Friend" vs "Partner"
So where is the boundary between platonic and romantic? What marks the difference between a (best) friend and a partner?
There is, for example, Liu Xiao and Li Tianchen's relationship. They aren't shown to have any kind of romantic undertones and there's even the very real possibility of manipulation on Liu Xiao's side. They're also never labeled as nor call each other partners, but instead Li Tianchen says he "met a new friend" and Liu Xiao says he's "going to meet an old friend" years later. So we could say for now that they have a somewhat close relationship (we see Li Tianchen go against Qian Jin to give the phone to Liu Xiao), but never cross that "friend" label.
We can even bring Qiao Ling and the boys' relationship. She's never labeled as a partner despite taking part in the side job and, more importantly, being super close to both of them. She is very important and a cherished friend to Shiguang, so why not call her partner too? I think it's intentional. Since she's been given a familial role already (calling Cheng Xiaoshi her brother when talking to Li Tianxi), she can't fill a partner role. I wonder why? because it's supposed to be a synonym for a romantic relationship. who said that.
So even best friends (Qiao Ling, arguably what Liu Xiao is to Li Tianchen) don't enter this close space that is being a partner. It's different, it's beyond platonic. Or at least that's what they've been showing us for the past two seasons.
I could go soo much more into this honestly, because I do think the little hints thrown here (the music videos) and there (tiny seemingly inconsequential details) are worth to be looked at too, but I wanted to get into the core reason that makes me go "woah so they're In Love fr". I hope I expressed myself well ^^
tldr; the series shows us a divide between having a (best) friend and a partner, giving "partners" romantic connotations.

Short answer : yes.
Long answer : I'm 99.99999% sure that yes, it will become canon.
First of all, there's no way that Togashi intended to write them as platonic best friends. The subtext concerning Killua's feelings for Gon is way too strong to just be ignored or dismissed. It's pretty canonical that Killua is in love with Gon. Togashi has been representing those two as sharing a very deep bond since the beginning of the story, and it's pretty obvious that he knew from the start where he wanted to take their relationship dynamic. There's been plenty of subtext throughout the story that leads to this conclusion of them ending up together, a lot more subtext about Killua's feelings towards Gon (especially in chimera ant arc), and I believe that Togashi is setting up Gon to reflect on those possible romantic feelings.
Ok I'm sidetracking here HAHA - anyways, my point is, Togashi has been setting up this subtext from the beginning of the story, and I doubt he would just. drop it. when everything he wrote was leading up to this.
So from a narrative point of view, it 100% makes sense to have killugon become canon, since the subtext is definitely leading this way.
From a technical point of view, I know some people think that Shonen Jump could meddle with Togashi's decision, but (and im pretty much quoting my conversation with @/reeeyachi here because it was so interesting) i don't think it will be the case. I think Shonen Jump was aware from the moment Togashi pitched HxH that it would feature (a) canonical relationship(s) between the main characters. I'm quoting Reeya here, but she explained that usually when you pitch a story, you have to pitch everything, from the characters, to the story, to the characters dynamics. And relationships/gender/sexual orientation are basic characterization that influence the character's choices so much (and we've seen it in HxH-especially during CAA). So if Togashi wanted to make sure he could take his characters where he wants to, he HAD to mention all of this. Especially since he's writing HxH right after Yu Yu Hakusho, which left him pretty much traumatized because he wasn't allowed to do what he wanted with his characters/story. I'm pretty sure Togashi would make extra sure that Shonen Jump knew what HxH would feature, and make sure he could do what he wants with HxH (and he confirmed it in an interview, where he said that SJ lets him do whatever he wants with hxh)
From a technical point of view, there's a pretty good chance that Shonen Jump knows where Togashi's story is headed, and if that's the case, there's no chance of editorial meddling and censorship.
Now, from a thematic point of view, you could argue that Togashi could lead us to believe Killugon will become canon and be happy forever, only to pull the rug out from our feet and deliver tragedy instead (one of them dying, them never confessing or it staying one-sided forever). But, as @/sincerelysamedt and @/reeeyachi explained in their wonderful replies to my question (here and here), the narrative that killugon conveys is too deeply interwoven into HxH's narrative as a whole to end in tragedy.
Sure, hxh is tragic, and talks about complicated subjects like war, death, vengeance, trauma, but the overarching theme is love and how it can save your life. And this has been illustrated in Killugon's story from the beginning : Gon saving Killua, only for Killua to save him in return.
So, it would be fitting that at the end of the day, the moral of gon's story would be somewhere along the lines of "no matter how many people walk away from you, you'll always find someone willing to stick by your side forever" ; killua's moral of the story would be something like "no matter how fucked up you think you are you can learn how to love and be loved in return" and the moral of killugon's relationship would be "no matter how broken you are you can always find someone to complete you". I feel like this is the message Togashi is trying to convey through his characters and their dynamics.
So, yes, from a thematic point of view, having Killua and Gon ending up together, happily, would be a fitting way to close hxh as a demonstration of all the themes hxh talked about : death, revenge, pain, trauma, and how at the end of the day human connection and love trumps all.
At least that's my take on it !! I wanna stay positive. We surely got the subtext for it, and it would fit in the story so well. So yeah, I do believe that making killugon canon was Togashi's intention from the get-go.

Okay— I’m currently keeping up with Osora right now and holy shit— I’ve never seen such a realistic portrayal of grooming and pedophila like Apollo and Miko. It sheds light on how victims of this kind of scenario irl get manipulated and how vulnerable they truly are. It doesn’t matter if they think or are mature for their age, they’re still a minor, end of story.

you just summed it up really well. Many people don't even know technical terms like bait, subtext, or code well. One day they woke up, saw something on twitter or reddit and just started bashing culture.
Queer bait is a 'bait' when you trick a queer audience by giving false hope that there are queer dynamic and queer characters, but then the whole narrative serves as eye candy for what queer may stand for in relation to heteronormative standards. There is trickery and misleading narratives that hook you into the story expecting queerness, but then it does not do justice to it. Queer bait attracts a demographic of the audience initially by providing false hope.
And when one is talking about Asian media, terms like 'best friends', 'partners' are used most frequently and there are reasons for that.
1. Censorship.
2. To realistically portray queerness in Asia, you can't really go 'gay rights!' in broad daylight. You are going to get bullied, or most people won't care. Okay, you gae, gui, gai whatever, what is so 'proud' about it? This does not mean that these media lack queer representation. They are, in a way, very humanized, open to exploration, and subversive in a more subtle yet powerful way.
3. The kind of media many people mislabel as queer bait or say, 'Ah, this isn't queer!' are mostly nuanced stories with a strong plot. It's very incomprehensible that a story like Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint can be queer because, oh my god, there is so much more- no, honey, you are media illiterate, sweetheart. This is actually an expression of covert homophobia, where one dissociates queerness from a good story. If it's a good story, it can't be gay. Lu Guang is heterosexual. Sure, buddy. At this point, Li Haolin will hunt you down with a gun.
That's why people are so interested in labeling 'queer stories.' It's like marking them as queer to exclude them. If queer stories sell in one niche, weird section serving people with low and deviant taste, then I can easily avoid that section. The problem arises when queer stories can be found in general, and I, as a homophobe, lack the intellectual caliber to tell what is queer and what is not. And if I somehow manage to feel that it is skin-pricklingly queer, I'll go on Twitter and scream, "It's queer bait!"

4. There is a section of people who say, 'I don't care who you ship, lol. No offense to you,' blah, blah, blah. They actually care very much. This is another form of homophobia that could not find a direct outlet. They are so triggered. People who genuinely don't care and queerify canon are obviously not as fragile as them. Will you find one person who ships, reads ship fanfic, enjoys ship fanart, and then comments on other shippers' posts: 'But, everyone has a different opinion. Everybody is allowed not to ship; it's not even canon. I don't care' - YOU CARE MORE THAN YOUR **t*** CARED ABOUT YOU. Be aware of these kinds of people. If you don't ship, Do Not Engage. Fandom is a place of interaction where we form bonds over shared interests. Just don't engage with them.

My initial and final thoughts on Hirano to Kagiura
SPOILERS AHEAD!!
When I started reading this manga, I couldn’t help but notice some kind of parallel between both couples– Sasaki and Miyano & Hirano to Kagiura. Although they both have their fair share of differences, I want to start with both their similarities. Even though both couples have the same year gap difference (Sasaki and Hirano being older and almost approaching their last year in highschool, while Miyano and Kagiura are both a year younger to Sasaki and Hirano, with only just a year grade difference). What stood out to me was that both Miyano and Hirano were/are unsure of their feelings when they got confessed to. They’re both not the type to jump into a relationship without understanding their emotions first.
Both are unequivocally aware– subconsciously and consciously– of how their words and actions might impact Sasaki and Kaigura. They know that acting on feelings they’re not sure of, or saying something that they don’t fully mean or understand– could end up hurting Sasaki and Kagiura. And that’s something they both want to avoid at all cost. This is shown in Hirano to Kagiura, where Hirano is aware and careful with his actions towards Kaigura, because he knows about this fact.
That’s why they take their time. The confession isn’t something that someone could easily brush off, let alone to both Hirano and Miyano, where they both do genuinely respect and care about Sasaki and Kaigura.
This is shown through Miyano letting Sasaki borrow BL mangas to him and Hirano doing things such as throwing a surprise party for Kaigura and going as far as to spend time with him, even adjusting his own schedule so that he could have time to spend them with Kagiura. Hell, even his own classmates, even Sasaki, point out that this isn’t typical of Hirano to do those type of things, let alone to his roommate (even though Hirano just brushes it off as him making sure that Kagiura is taken care of cough).
Because of this, they take their time to process and try to understand it. They need to be absolutely sure of how they feel because once they are sure, and if those feelings turn out to be wrong or unreciprocated, they could end up hurting Sasaki and Kagiura. And they both know that.
Now we’ve got the similarities out of the way (the once that are prevalent) let’s move on to the difference and the sole focus now being Hirano and Kagiura— firstly, when I said that Hirano is not sure of his feelings, I meant his current feelings right now, not when Kagiura confesses.
Because before, Kagiura got rejected because Hirano doesn’t feel the same way (yet) which is absolutely valid. However, what got my attention was that Hirano is still willing to spend time with him, even treating the whole confession as something that wasn’t odd.
And what captured me even more was that Hirano agreed to touch Kagiura to see if Hirano would ever feel the same way. Because if you truly do know that you don’t like the other person, why still agree to a test to see if you could see the person that confessed to you as a romantic interest. You rejected them for a reason, right? If so, why? You could argue that it’s Hirano still showing that he still cares for Kagiura. Well yes, you aren’t wrong. I do agree with it to some degree. However, if you look at it deeper, the reason why Hirano agreed with the deal in the first place is because he wants to understand Kaigura’s feelings.
While reading the manga, you could clearly read Hirano’s thoughts and his perspectives. He truly does want to understand Kagiura’s feelings because he cares about him. I mean– he even told Kagiura that he does like him– as a person. He’s willing to go out of his way to spend more time with him in order to grow closer and overall, to understand not only his feelings, but also him as a person.
We can clearly see that outside of feelings and just their friendship as a whole. Example of this is Hirano figuring out what to get Kagiura for his birthday that is outside of Christmas and also planning a surprise birthday party for him. Like I mentioned (and even people who know him such as his classmates and club members in the disciplinary committee) again, Hirano is not the type of person to do these types of things, let alone his roommate. So seeing him going out of his way to do all of these just to show Kagiura that he does care about him and is always there for him.
Since this is already long enough as it is, the last point I want to touch on is Hirano’s growing feelings for Kagiura. I mean– let’s face it, we already know it’s developing– I’ll go even further to say that Hirano has already developed them and is falling deeper for Kagiura. It’s literally shown in the manga and while Hirano claims that he doesn’t feel the same way but his actions prove otherwise. Example of this is Hirano recently initiating the 10 seconds rule, by allowing himself to hug or even just touch Kagiura.
Now you might be thinking, if Hirano does feel the same way, why didn’t he just confess to Kaigura during the time he confessed? Simple, he doesn’t understand his own feelings. Think about it: Hirano has never had any romantic attraction towards anyone, let alone guys. So what makes you think that he’ll immediately know it and suddenly get it into his brain? Feelings and emotions are more complicated than it seems. You aren’t just gonna know it, in fact, you could probably still be indenial of those feelings even if the person you like reciprocates them.
But let me just say, if Hirano does finally realize his feelings (which it will happen), I have a feeling that it’s going to hit him like a train all in one. No matter how he realizes his feelings, it would still be fulfilling and satisfying to me as a reader because every chapter and moments they have had has been building up to this point. Won’t it be rewarding?

Hey guys— don’t you think the corruption in heaven in TGCF is similar to the corruption of governments in many countries? I mean— we all know that many heavenly officials use their power for their selfishness and greed, especially Jun Wu. But don’t you think if you analyze it more, it resembles our world’s governance and politics today? Take Trump for example.
Also another thing I noticed is that in TGCF, it shows that everyone and every place there is neither good or bad, even ghost city isn’t even portrayed as a good place. It’s been said over and over again that it’s where ghosts, people, and even heavenly officials do their shady deals and even going as far as to explore the place. Isn’t that what we’re experiencing today?
Because for our definition of “heaven”, it’s the upper class. The celebrities, influencers, and the CEOs of brands, anyone who is of high social class or well known. But we can’t exactly call it a good place. Why? Because of all that has been exposed about each figures, not to mention on how they address accusations are very telling. Full of lies, guilt tripping, victim blaming, excuses, etc. They would do anything to hide the truth just for their own public appearances, to be viewed as superior compared to everyone else. It’s like a competition to see who gets the most attraction and attention. Not to mention that in TGCF, MXTX highlights the privilege and favouritism (i.e. Jun Wu’s ‘favouritism’ towards Xie Lian) of heavenly officials. If anything gets out about that official, they’ll do anything to sweep it under the rug. Like how Pei Ming tried to cover up for Pei Xiu during the Banyue arc.
Next, as for “ghost city”, it’s a similar way to describe us. Pretty similar to how I’d compare heaven and upper class so I’ll try to be as short as possible. Anyways— In my interpretation, I see “ghost city” as a representation of many marginalized communities (LGBTQ+, PIDWs, Indigenous people, religious minorities, etc.). Ghost city is shown to have many outcasts, even criminals, and those rejected by the heaven. Similar to how our society rejects people who are different from ‘standard.’ Another thing is the strong moral ambiguity for many ghosts, especially Hua Cheng. While yes, they aren’t good people. They aren’t bad people either. Which brings me to my last point: I’d also like to highlight the fact that every character in TGCF has motives.
Everyone did what they do for a reason. Although we can’t exactly agree with them, we understand it. Similar to our world today. Humans do what we do to survive. It’s how we live everyday. Like how many characters in TGCF form connections, even “friends”, we could say the same for us. We live in a world where not everything is black and white. We form connections and relationships because humans cannot live alone. Like a famous person ones said: “no man is an island”

MY THOUGHTS ON THE HUNGER GAMES: BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES (MILD SPOILERS)
First of, let me just start by saying... HOLY SHIT THE MOVIE WAS SUCH AN EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER THAT I HAD TO PAUSE TO PROCESS THE SCENE.... and not to mention the details? god I loved that so much!! I love how they depicted the mockingjays and also the plant name being katniss?? LIKE OMG? THE FORESHADOWING OF THE FUTURE?? That's honestly peak imo.
But anyways, I really loved the fact that the protagonist of the prequel was Snow. It makes us, the audience, really know his character and what made him the way he is in the hunger games we know of. Not only that but I also really loved the parallel of Lucy Gray Baird with Katniss Everdeen... honestly, these two might not be related but they're also really similar in a lot of ways as well.
Honestly, before I watched the movie, I was expecting something happened to Lucy and that she died or something and that's how Snow became the person he is today. But as I thought about it further, I began to question as to why he became the way he is? Because if he truly did love Lucy, wouldn't he want to fulfill her wish and end the Hunger Games? Because normally, when someone the MC loves died, wouldn't you try and fulfill the one thing they truly want or become the person they want you to become? By that process, I figured that there was more to them than just life and death situations.
While watching the movie, I was wondering how this guy, who had aspirations and dreams of his own and actually sympathized with people from districts and even became friends with one who came from there, became such a ruthless and narcissistic person, who cares only for himself and power.
And finally, after a lot of thinking and having watched the entire movie, I finally got the answer.... because that's who Snow really is. Yes, he had expectations and passions that he wanted to achieve but think about it thoroughly, why did he have them? It was because he wanted control and authority, but most of all, he wanted power, and that was highlighted at the very end.
Of course knowing him, he got rid of every loose ends he had. He knew he couldn't survive out in the wilderness with Lucy, he wanted to go back to the capital. Even though he did love Lucy, that part of him was much stronger than his love and trust for her, and because of that, he tried to kill her. Trying to get rid of the his last string that was holding him back. Snow hates loose ends and in the movie, the qoute summed it up perfectly as to why he despises it. "It's the things we love most, that destroy us"
I already expected that it would already end in tragedy because the movie is just a prequel and the beginning of hell throughout the 75 years because let's be honest, with already knowing who snow truly is at the end, should we really hope for a happy ending? I don't think so.
